WARSAW, Poland — Poland’s prime minister said Friday that “huge amounts of chemical waste” were probably dumped intentionally into the Oder River, which runs along the border with Germany, causing environmental damage so severe it will take the river years to recover.

Tons of dead fish have been seen floating or washed ashore on the Oder’s banks over the past two weeks but the issue only erupted into a major scandal late this week.

Water has always been abundant, making predictions and prophecies that WWIII will be fought over water seem impossible. Not so much now, when we read daily abought rivers, lakes, streams and aquifers shrinking to the point scientists fear they won't recover.

“Huge amounts of chemical waste were probably dumped in the Oder River with full awareness of the risks and consequences,” he said in a video on Facebook. “We will not let this matter go. We will not rest until the guilty are severely punished.”

German media have reported that the poison is mercury, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the mass fish die-off. Huge numbers of dead fish were first spotted near the southwestern Polish town of Olawa in late July, along with dead animals such as beavers.

This should be a wake-up call for the entire world, but will it be? So very sad...mankind just keeps crapping in their own nest.

This should be a wake-up call for the entire world,

The warning has now been made for decades and decades but captains of industry have continued to hit the ''snooze alarm'' . ''Go back to sleep, we'll take care of it so that by the time you wake up we will have solved the problem.''

I only know of the Oder because Napoleon crossed it a few dozen times. Haven't read the article but it's hard to imagine anyone intentionally poisoning a large river that way. Does the river start in Transylvania by any chance? (kind of a joke/not a joke)

Sadly, this kind of thing happens fairly often around the world. The USA has improved a lot in lessening the incidents, but during floods it still happens. Europe has still been letting stuff be dumped in the rivers, getting a little better, but the USA has improved a lot with this with the exception of too much farm chemicals getting in the rivers and lakes.

To me, fixing the polution problem is more necessary than taxing gas and oil. Yeah, carbon is an issue, but it is way less concerning than the unnatural or concentrated natural chemistry heading into the rivers, lakes, and oceans. We are killing the ability of the earth to heal itself.

My small local river has been poisoned several times in my lifetime. On a few occasions, the culprit has been caught, issued a small fine, and then forced to make a gesture of restocking the river with 1500 trout fry.

What the powers that be fail to realize are that it's not only the fish that die but every damn thing the fish feed on as well. What is the point in adding fish to rivers devoid of a food source?

The culprits should be jailed and their possessions sold at auction.

The culprits should be fed a diet consisting strictly of water and fish from the river they've polluted.

No, it starts in Czechia.

This problem is probably a mix of toxic waste and lower water levels.
