The original thread has drawn to a close as it reached the limit allowed. But the soap opera continues....

For reference the old thread is:

Rendlesham Forest, A Christmas Story from 1980 - Can We ‘Let it Be’?

However the story has not ended. We can't ‘let it be’. So time to 'get back where we once belonged.....'

For those who have no idea about the original thread then, to save you reading through 300 pages, here are a few highlights. For others it’s a quick refresher.

Story Refresher

A long time ago in a forest, far, far away for American servicemen....

Christmas Night 25th into 26th December 1980 (3am) – after reports of strange lights in Rendlesham Forest, England, three USAF security policemen are sent to investigate a possible downed aircraft from the nearby twin NATO bases of Woodbridge and Bentwaters. One of the men in later years, SSgt. Jim Penniston claims to have touched an unidentifiable black triangular craft with strange glyph like markings and received a ‘binary download’ from it. His initial statements implied that he had never got nearer than 50m to what he described as a physical craft. Nearby John Burroughs described it as a bank of lights in the forest whilst Ed Cabansag describes a similar experience to Burroughs but thought he saw an egg-shaped object.

26th December 1980 – During daylight USAF investigations into the incident are made with the involvement of the British Police. Later that evening after further reports of lights in the forest a female shift commander ventures out into Rendlesham Forest , her patrol vehicle stalls and then a ball of blue light flies through the vehicle leaving her deeply traumatised and she is sent home. Shortly afterwards she leaves the Air Force for good.

27th/28th and /or 28th/29th December – More UFO sightings are made and Colonel Charles Halt, the deputy base commander leads a team into the forest, who record non-hazardous but higher than normal radiation readings at a suspected landing site. They follow a strange glowing red light as it moves through the trees. High in the skies strange lights are reported firing beams of light downwards in the areas of the twin bases. Parts of Halt’s investigation are recorded on audio tape which is now in the public domain and commonly known as the Halt Tape.

The Witnesses Stories Updated

The Warren Emissions
Larry Warren is arguably the most controversial of the ‘witnesses’. He was stationed at Bentwaters in 1980. But everything else about his story must now be placed in doubt and under tight scrutiny. In an interview in 2015 Adrian Bustinza, who had remained tight lipped for years reduced Warren’s role to a minor one.

In 1997 Warren co-authored a book with Peter Robbins “Left at East Gate”. This detailed Warren’s life story as well as his take on the Rendlesham incident.

Robbins, however, decided to part ways after discovering Warren’s military photos and documents (some used in the book as evidence) looked tampered with, that his story doesn’t add up in comparison with other facts and Warren’s penchant for claiming he was friends with such people as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. In interviews he has claimed he was a PR officer for the Beach Boys (when he would still have been in school) and even to have discovered the band Metallica. This was all seemingly to build provenance to sell rock memorabilia of perhaps questionable origin. His story has become a complete mess and by 2016 he seemed to be threatening all and sundry on social media. At the end of 2016 Peter Robbins issued a statement.

The book “Left at East Gate” has now been withdrawn from sale. Warren has continued to try to promote his version of the story and his soap opera hasn’t died quite yet. There are a bunch of people clinging onto him believing the rest of the world are against him. But the rest of the story would take a book to explain...

To begin with start with his faked A10 photo...: www.abovetopsecret.com...

James Penniston and that Binary Code

Jim Penniston is another witness with a problematic story. Although it’s nowhere near as bad as Warren’s. There is no doubt Penniston was one of the original witnesses and the senior officer during off-base investigations conducted on the 26th December 1980.

After that there are plenty of doubts about his ever expanding story. Penniston had appeared on many TV and radio shows and at a number of conferences until going virtually silent after the publication of a book “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest” which he co-authored with John Burroughs and Nick Pope (ex- British MoD). Penniston remains completely alone with his claims to have seen a mechanical craft of some sort in his initial statement although he does mention red and blue lights that Burroughs and Cabansag saw.

Penniston has slowly introduced other elements to his story. In ITV’s UK documentary series “Strange But True (1994)” he mentioned that he saw strange symbols on the craft as it rapidly disappeared. In later years he has claimed he spent 45 minutes photographing the craft, taking notes and even touched, what he describes, as a glasslike surface on the landed craft. Etched into the surface were symbols that he also drew in his notebook. He has also attempted to relegate the roles of Cabansag (claiming he was further back and used as a radio relay) and Burroughs (taking advantage of Burroughs claims that after hitting the ground the lights disappeared rapidly by making out Burroughs was prostrate and unconscious. Rather than checking on his partner he then chose to spend 45 minutes inspecting a craft of unknown origin).

In 2010 Penniston revealed that he had also received a “binary” code download from the craft while filming an episode of Ancient Aliens. It is supposed to be a message from our far future.

So what did he reveal? Besides some obvious spelling mistakes?

Well firstly it seems that Hy-Brasil is one of the mystical locations that Penniston didn’t like first but then agreed with because it fitted his agenda.

The first co-ordinates publicly released were given as 52.0942532N, 13.131269W.

The location is off the West Coast of Ireland. Supposedly the mythical island Hy-Brasil. It was grasped upon by the History Channel in Ancient Aliens. Penniston then embraced the Hy-Brasil theory.

The co-ordinates of the main market square at the centre of Woodbridge in Suffolk on Google Earth were:
52.0942532N, 1.3131269E (note how the decimal point moves as well)

So what do we have?

The (adjusted) binary points to - 52.0942532N, 13.131269W

Woodbridge is located at - 52.0942532N, 1.3131269E

An easy mistake is for Americans to be unaware that the Greenwich Meridian runs through the far Eastern side of Britain and assume everything is to the West (as it is in the USA with the exception of the extremes of Alaska).

So swap the west for east and then cheat with one shift of the decimal point (which wasn’t present at all in the original “binary code") and the co-ordinates point to the town centre of Woodbridge. Penniston can argue that was a moment of impairment and confusion possibly even the onset of serious mental problems. We can question his whole story and whether this minor point is relevant or not.

Finally we come to his other co-ordinates from the binary code.

It would seem that Jim Penniston, or someone connected to him, lifted most of the co-ordinates from www.sacred-destinations.com before late 2010. Even if they didn’t the co-ordinates have a signature leading back to a certain source.
Here are the links to the pages of sacred-destinations.com with the coordinates as they are and were in March 2010 some 9 months before the Woodbridge Conference:

Caracol, Belize - 16.763177° N, 89.117768° W

Link to Jim's co-ordinates
Since the fifth decimal of each co-ordinate covers about 1 metre, and the sixth decimal covers an area of just 10 cm, then probability that all five sets of coordinates match to within a metre is a coincidence of 100,000,000,000,000,000,000 : 1

The probability that Jim’s coordinates would match sacred-destinations.com back in 2010 is 99.99%

Pretty much a certainty. If he didn’t do it then someone else fed him this information using the co-ordinates.
Accusations have been made that the Wayback Machine was hacked to discredit Jim’s story and prove that the co-ordinates were there before 2010. Actually if anyone thinks that one through there would be no need to do anything like that. His binary code must have been created long after 1980.

The ASCII standard has always been 7-bit. Jim's messages are in 8-bit ASCII.

8 bit 'ASCII extensions' only came into fashion from 1981 onwards, with DOS, the IBM-PC, .. (Ref.).
(In these 8-bit extensions a 0 was placed in front of the standard 7-bit ASCII codes.)

Why bother Jim with all these extra 0's in 1980 ..?

Encoding the whole 916 bit message for 7 bits ASCII, reading left to right:

Colonel Charles Halt and his Perspective

In 1980 the then Deputy Base Commander at the Twin Bases – Charles Halt was the most senior firsthand witness. He became involved on the night of 27th/28th December 1980 when a number of US military personnel once again reported UFO activity in Rendlesham Forest . He has said he wanted to put an end to the nonsense. Instead Halt now plays a large part of a UFO story.

His memo and tape recording (recorded in live ‘excerpts’ as events unfold) are two of the major pieces of evidence. However they also pose a number of questions.

In his memo why did Halt say the incident happened “Early in the morning of 27th Dec 80 (approximately 0300L)”. He had the witness statements available and, presumably, the police ‘blotters’ with details when the incident happened. But he chose to date the incident on the early morning of the 27th Dec 1980. This would have been 24 hours after the original incident was reported.

The description, “..the object was described as being metallic in appearance and triangular in shape, approximately two to three meters across the base and approximately two meters high...”, does not appear in any of the three witness statements from Burroughs, Cabansag or Penniston. Where did this information come from?

There is no mention of Burroughs and Bustinza’s experience heading into the lights in the memo and this also seems to follow the omission on his famous tape. Strangely Jim Penniston’s notebook details the date of an “A/C crash” as 27 Dec 1980.

If his story is as exciting as he has made in interviews then his decisions at the time are also questionable. There was a request from RAF Watton for a radar report at 3:00am. But no major alert was called on the base, nor was a request for air support made. Halt chose to continue stomping around a forest against the terms of the Status of Forces Agreement on British territory.

Yet he has claimed beams of light from above were shining down on Weapons Storage Areas containing nuclear warheads. But his actions indicate that there was never enough of a threat to disturb anyone.

More on all of that here : www.abovetopsecret.com...

Halt has kept himself busy with the story in the past few years. He visited Woodbridge once again in 2016 to give a speech, has appeared on a number of radio shows and podcasts and even co-wrote a book with John Hansen called “The Halt Perspective”. The book is poorly organised and only about a third of it covers the incident and Halt’s perspective. Apparently another one is in the works. Halt is on record as saying that he has no interest in getting the witnesses together and attempting to work out happened. His favourite topic of attacking Larry Warren has diminished as well since Warren began to destroy his own story. Suspicions remain over Halt’s role and continuing role to this day.

John Burroughs

John Burroughs is the only (known) witness to have been present in the forest on two nights of the incident. He recalls being with Jim Penniston and Ed Cabansag on the early morning of Dec 26th 1980 as they approached “lights” in the forest but remembers very little other than hitting the ground as it moved off rapidly into the distance.

On the 3rd night (27th/28rh Dec 1980) he recalls being allowed to move ahead of Colonel Halt and his team with Sgt. Adrian Bustinza towards the strange light in a clearing. As he got closer he said the light appeared to have engulfed him and then disappeared.

Since then Burroughs has appeared in a number of documentaries and was present at the “Binary Reveal” moment by Jim Penniston in Woodbridge in 2010. Returning home and feeling unwell Burroughs was diagnosed with heart trouble. On Dec 18th 2013 he underwent open heart surgery for a shredded heart valve. Prior to this John asked his that his medical records be released by the military. He was first informed that there was no record of him being in the US Air Force between 1979 and 1983. A long legal battle with the US Veteran’s Association (VA) ensued.

After further appeals he discovered his medical records were actually “classified”. Another lengthy legal battle followed involving Senator John McCain, amongst others, and his attorney Pat Frascogna. In this time Burroughs discovered that buried within the British MoD’s report “Project Condign” there was a paragraph of deep significance to his case.

"The well-reported Rendlesham Forest/Bentwaters event is an example where it might be postulated that several observers were probably exposed to UAP [Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon] radiation for longer than normal UAP sighting periods."

Intervention by Dr. Christopher ‘Kit’ Green seemed to eventually secure Burroughs the treatment he required. But left many more questions as to what happened to him. Burroughs co-wrote the book “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest” with Jim Penniston and Nick Pope. But his relationship with Penniston appears to have broken down immediately afterwards and remains ‘prickly’ with Nick Pope and Colonel Charles Halt.

John Burroughs was up until recently co-host of a radio show with Linda Moulton Howe. He has had a number of interesting guests and also revealed some further interesting evidence and speculation about the incident. One being that a weapon was developed off the back of what happened to him in Rendlesham Forest.

Cookie – A New Witness Story

Cookie” is the nickname of a witness who went public fairly recently. She was a young female truck driver transferring supplies between the Twin Bases, Woodbridge and Bentwaters. She has said she was on duty all three nights of the incident (25th -28th December 1980). She recalls hearing a calm authoritative ‘voice’, calling himself ‘Bill’, advising her truck would stop. She was needed in the area as people were going to require a ride back to the Bentwaters.

Her truck died as predicted and the radio would produce ‘static’ as it happened each night.

These incidents seemed to happen around 8-10 minutes after midnight. On the first night she got out of the truck and only 30-35 feet into the woods could see a bright light surrounded by lights underneath and around the ‘main light/object’. She thought Penniston was closest and the object looked roughly triangular. At one point Burroughs was ‘just gone’. She thought 8-10 mins but questions herself that it may have been longer? Then he was ‘just there again’.

There was a noticeable ‘prickly’ feeling on the backs of her hands & arms as she got closer and the men who had been out there were dazed, confused and ‘weirded out’. They were looking at their hands. But their cheeks and foreheads also appeared to have a strange ‘sunburned’ look.

It felt like every night the vehicle stopped at 12:10 and around 3:00 that the personnel were transported back to the motor pool at Bentwaters. That was when a person in a white coat got out of another vehicle to examine the witnesses checking the sunburn like effects and then they all boarded another truck. This vehicle was always waiting on each of the three nights and would then drive off once everyone had been checked over and got on board another truck.

On the second night MSgt. Bob Ball and Lt. Bonnie Tamplin were at the side of the road already. Ball seemed fine if confused and dazed a little. But Tamplin seemed in deep shock, shivering and sweaty. Her voice had gone and she seemed terrified of whatever was out there.

The third night was the one with the most going on. She could see lights moving around the forest and didn’t think the events occurred as late as the previous nights. But by this time she was concerned that ‘Bill’ and the voice were not coming through via the radio but was all in her head. In fact how was this happening?

Cookie remembers Colonel Halt coming out of the woods and refusing to board the truck because he was saying “..no we’ve got a vehicle”. He also appeared surprised that he was checked out like everyone else by the ‘doctor’ at the Bentwaters motor pool. On this final night ‘Cookie’ also boarded the truck with the other witnesses who had returned from the forest. She then recalls medical examinations where blood was taken and a lot of concern was expressed about their eyes.

It appears ‘Cookie’ was drugged as she states she felt light headed and was repeating what the ‘anonymous’ interrogators were saying. She was supposedly told to say the incident was some kind of military operation but some of the interrogation team said “...She can’t lie. She won’t lie”.

Cookie then ponders that others, including Colonel Halt, may have said what they were told to say.

Other witnesses Stories in Brief.

Adrian Bustinza

Adrian has remained out of the limelight in the main since the incident only rarely giving interviews. Adrian Bustinza was the NCO in charge on the Halt night of the incident (27th/28th Dec 1980). The original comments can be seen here : www.abovetopsecret.com...

However Adrian also appeared on John Burroughs radio show in 2015 and gave a differing account in places as to what happened.

Adrian seemed very nervous and confused about the events and was not consistent with his previous statements He also relegated Larry Warren to the periphery of event and confirmed that he approached a strange ‘fuzzy’ light in a clearing with John Burroughs. Bustinza was due to appear again on John Burrough’s radio show in the past 12 months but had to attend to an emergency. He has not made a re-scheduled appearance on the show to date.

Other Witnesses (not comprehensive)

Ed Cabansag – Ed has not gone public since his appearance in “I Know What I Saw” back in theearly 2000s. So there are no updates to his account.

Monroe Nevels – Bentwaters Disaster Preparedness officer in 1980 and part of Halt’s posse. He remained largely silent until a few years ago when he claimed that UFOs burned a hole into the (nuclear) Weapons Storage Areas at the base : youtu.be...

"One of the light beams...it came down, actually penetrated through one of the bunkers that had the nuclear weapons in it. It actually burned a hole through the bunker there and was able to get through to the site where the weapons were."

Perhaps his memory is going? Nevels was a couple of miles away with Colonel Halt on the night this allegedly happened. Yet no alerts were called on the base despite the obvious threat to the ordnance , US military personnel and the United Kingdom such an event would have created. It seems this story is extremely unlikely to be true : www.abovetopsecret.com...

Nevels has been assisting Jim Penniston with his forthcoming book.

Robert Ball – Another member of Halt’s posse who has not gone on record for a long time. He felt that the lights they witnessed were conducting some form of grid search on the Halt night. But he hasn’t spoken since the early 1990s and has never talked about the incident involving Bonnie Tamplin on the 2nd night of events when she was allegedly calling him for help over the radio.

Bruce Englund – The Lieutenant who was apparently on duty because Bonnie Tamplin had been relieved from duty the previous night (much to Halt’s apparent ignorance). He has never gone on record to my knowledge.

Chris Armold – A witness who maintains that nothing happened beyond a few men stamping round the woods and getting over excited.

Bonnie Tamplin – Has never spoke publicly of her experience and left the USAF shortly after it.

There are numerous other secondary witnesses who were on the base at the time but for the sake of brevity I have not listed them here.

Witness Statements

Strangely while there are witness statements taken (we believe by Colonel Halt on Jan 2nd 1981) from the first night of events, there are none from subsequent nights that have been made public.

There are also large discrepancies amongst the statements. Only the senior officers are recorded on official USAF stationery with Burroughs being in his own handwriting. Penniston’s is unsigned and undated.

Whereas Burroughs, Chandler, Buran and Cabansag’s statements form a reasonably coherent story, Halt and Penniston’s narrative are divergent from day one. A finger of suspicion hangs over these two characters for that reason. Both Halt’s memo and Penniston’s notebook date the incident as 27th Dec 1980.

When exactly did the first sighting trigger an investigation off base? A consensus view would be 3:00am on Dec. 26th 1980 (even Halt’s time; if not date also agree). Then it would seem investigations ended completely on a return to base around 4:30am. It also ties in with the Suffolk Police reports.

However Penniston claims he was called at midnight (as he told Georgina Bruni in her book and as reported in “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest” his own book). This is because in his expansive story he has chosen to also relegate other witnesses roles. He spent so long exploring a craft of unknown origin, drawing it, photographing it and generally taking an awful long time over something about the size of a small family car. He also ignored his colleague John Burroughs for that length of time who he claims was prostrate and unconscious on the ground. Violating his duty of care as his senior officer and potentially leaving him for dead. (He wlll also update this story with his excuse in due time)

Halt’s memo is also suspicious because of the dates, the description of the craft and the fact he claims he got the date wrong because he was trying to recall from memory. I don’t buy that excuse, He had witness statements and records at hand. You don’t just take things off the top of your head when composing official memos to allied governments.

Theories

There are many, many theories and stories of what happened at Rendlesham Forest in 1980. From nothing at all except for a bunch of Americans goofing around at Xmas to time travellers from our far future. Here are the original links....

Theories (part 1) : The Burning Fertilizer Truck, Tractor and Police Car Lights , 67th ARRS Accident theories

Theories (part 2): Satellite Rocket Re-Entry Theory, “Explained Lights” – The Orfordness Lighthouse

We have also more recently looked at the Kosmos 1227 satellite launched by the Soviets on Dec 16th 1980 and how it’s mission appears to have been terminated early, on the same day the 3rd night of the RFI occurred .

Summary of the Previous Thread (Spring 2017)

***THINGS OF NOTE***

* Any TV documentaries or reconstructions that were filmed after 1987 cannot accurately show how Rendlesham Forest looked back in 1980. The great storms of that year felled many trees and the forest has since been largely replanted. So things like suspected landing sites have looked different for over 30 years now. Most of these shows are not even filmed in England, never mind Rendlesham Forest.

* The Orfordness lighthouse could be seen from the forest in 1980 despite the protestations of many. There was a shield around it but this prevented the beam shining into the town of Orford not Rendlesham Forest. It has now been decommissioned.

I think this event/encounter has been twisted and lied about for decades in my humble opinion. The original story, when first reported was that there had been some strange lights in the forest with soldiers witnessing the event and possibly experiencing some sort of encounter of the first kind (from what I remember, basically lights in the sky). Then it went away for a while before suddenly one of the guys involved did an interview with a magazine, if I remember (it might have been an early book) and said other stuff happened, that he touched the craft was given a vision etc. but others said that they never saw him do it or didn't witnesses it.

It sort of has become a non-starter for me. I do believe something happened, that they may have seen lights in the forest (if it happened today I think with the current world most people wouldn't say aliens but say spies or teenagers out for a party lol) and maybe it was the nearby lighthouse, yes even soldiers can make mistakes in the middle of the night (my Uncle was in the military for a good few years and made a few when it came to identifying things at night) but how much that they later claimed happened...not so much. I think sometimes the actual event is far more mundane than we like to think and people add to it because they are getting some attention. So as I said, this isn't one that I find credible because it just feels like the same story is being told in slightly different ways.

For sure. The most vocal witnesses have tended to inflate their stories down the years. Perhaps enjoying the modicum of fame the case has brought them. All have their own agendas.

But the one thing that nags is the story of John Burroughs heart damage. The fact that his medical records remain top secret to this day and his long legal case (involving the late Senator John McCain) to win his case against the VA.

I don't understand the question.

Superb summary, MM.

Upcoming items will no doubt include :

Warren and Gary Heseltine's 'Capel Green' documentary - if anything, the trailer promises a moody, even deliciously spooky work, however wild and unlikely the story. I'm hoping Bustinza is a surprise guest star, but I doubt it.

Penniston and Gary Osborn's book about the binary codes. Like all other works, it promises the Real Truth after years of misinformation, disinformation and opportunists. We'll be the judge of that, Jim.

'The Halt Perspective II' - although God knows what else Chuck can add, unless he spills the beans about why he 'knows' an ETH is applicable; which he won't. Alternatively, he'll extend his tedious dispute with Warren, which was an ugly, childish feature of the first rather incoherent book.

´Rendlesham: The Musical' - just speculating, since we've already had the stage play.

"Cookie – A New Witness Story"

You've spent a lot of time telling us what you think of the credibility
or consistency of various supposed first-hand witnesses.

I was trying to elicit further thoughts on "Cookie".

If there's anything remotely accurate about her testimony, what she
had to say was more interesting than most other accounts.

Aah OK. Well there is a link back to the original pages.

But it seems like what she thinks happened has a repetitive pattern to it and probably the result of hypnosis and suggestion. Even the good Colonel appears to have had reaction to certain 'nursery rhyme triggers'

The doctor in her story has apparently been ID'd by Halt and Burroughs. If she was drugged and hypnotised to tell a story then it's probable others were too. Which means the case would, intentionally be, all over the place. And that's exactly where it is.

Many people will always embellish things like this
Just like Roswell expanded over the years this one did too. Though I have to study this one more closely to get a better take on it.
Then I can decipher what is probably true and what is probably not true.

Thanks to mm for the information
