Grow a damn mustache, enjoy a drink, and then ask that question.

You have a mustache? Your posts have never struck me as coming from a mustache guy. Huh.

And I wonder...with all the big plastic bottles and containers, why start with the humble and tiny straw? Don't they take up less space at least (in a landfill)?

They sell aluminum and stainless steel straws and they even come with a cleaning brush and silicone tips.

Pack of six for ten bucks.

Not bad but the social image will be rough on the nerd with his own pack of steel straws.

I should know

ETA
Well no, I don't have steel straws but I am sure I do something nerdy in others eyes and have had that stigma.

I don't mind being that nerd.

I'm already socially outcast, but at least I'll be ahead of the curve.

LOL.

You guys don't have your own personal metal straw?

Losers.

Once the trend of metal straws gains momentum, expect to see sterling silver and gold straws at Nordstrom.

You heard it here first.

The last thing a person with their own SS straws is thinking about, is their social life. I would know.

I'm actually picturing bling. Diamond studded straws. All the rappers will be sipping kris through them in the videos.

I see you have the Sight as well.

Welcome to the Nerding.

We shall start a revolution.

There are even tactical straws for SHTF situations. Save the environment today and save yourself from bandits in the future!!

This fella has it half-right and half-wrong. His 'tactical straw' is halfway to being a steel baton...

Yessss!!

I've always wanted to start a revolution.

But can we start tomorrow?

My eczema is flaring up and I broke my glasses today, hate to say.

Custom straws have potential.

Now if we can just get these monkeys interested in using them....

Instead of engraved pen and pencil sets for graduation, traditional gifting becomes engraved straws and monogrammed pocket protectors?

The irony of the 'eliminate straws' movement is that the biggest profit item in the food industry is beverage sales.

Profits on beverage sales often top 1000%. Go to McDonald's and you pay about $2.50 for a large drink. The cups costs a couple cents, the water is free, the syrup is like $.001 cents per drink, the CO2 is about the same and all there is left is the lid and that EVIL STRAW (worth what, maybe $.02 combined). Just do the math.

The wife and I had a small food business for a while. We routinely sold drinks at reasonable prices (like a can of soda for $.75, etc.) and we still made a staggering profit on drinks. Most of our competitors were selling drinks at 2-3x what we were. We were also routinely asked to raise our drink prices by both the competition and event organizers...too many times to count. (was killing competition they said). So, people in the business definitely knew what the item with the most profit margin was! Think about it, it's like an automatic sale. Who's going to order food without getting a drink? So, lose money on the food if you have to because you'll more than make up for it on the drinks!

Oh, and we did NOT offer straws!!! LOL!

What's wrong with going back to bio-degradable, wax coated paper straws?

This is the best common sense reply I have heard in a long time. I'm sure you would be ignored if you sent your suggestion to ultra liberal Seattle.

I am with you, straws inhibit my capacity to drink swiftly. I got stuff to do, I don't have all day to drink something from a straw.

I can't tell if you're sarcastic...

Maybe sharpen the edge on one end and have a easily concealed weapon. Folded napkin on other end to shove it home.
