Mexicans are the most numerous. But you can find stings that catch Russian amd Chinese periodically as well.

I often go out, when I don't drive, without my credit card/ID holder. Particularly if I have no intention of buying something or perpetrating a felony where I may need one or the other.

Would you still feel that way if you were the victim of a crime, and were told the police couldn't help you because they found the perpetrator, but he didn't feel like talking to the police?

That's sort of the key element in your little scenario. According to you, the police have found a person they have reasonable and articulable suspicion of committing a crime.

Stopping somebody to ask about their immigration status doesn't have that in the scenario AM laid out, which is "when they feel like asking."

If you're white, they are not looking for you.

So, if you're an undocumented Irish, with red hair and green eyes, you're safe.

If you're non-white, then it depends on how you speak, i.e. your accent.

If you "sound" Hispanic, like from Mexico or other Central American country, or from South America, they'll take you in for questioning. Then, you'd better have some ID.

If you don't have ID, and are brown skinned, you'll get detained, and maybe deported to somewhere, wherever they think you're from.

If you're black, they may or may not overlook you. That depends on the ICE agent.

What they are mostly looking for is Mexicans, and anyone who looks like they could be Mexican.

The more different you look from Mexican, the safer you are.
