I was hoping for the same. An updated mars pic, a banana peel, a nail, anything!

Was already covered in this thread here a couple of weeks ago:

It's debris from the heat shield for Opportunity.

The rover arrived there Sol 324 and spent several days taking images of the debris. Go look for yourselves:

Opportunity Sol 348

When the rovers land, they roll down off a platform that serves as a heat shield during atmospheric-entry and as a landing buffer. The rover then moves around independently on its wheels.

The picture is just looking back at the landing pad.

PS: Since this is (I suspect) the Opportunity rover, that landing pad has a special silicon glass DVD with my mission participation details on it. My involvement is recorded on disks on both the Opportunity and Spirit rover's landing pads. So in a way, I'm on Mars as we speak.

They've finally found the Beagle 2 lander - or at least a bit of it

www.spaceflightinsider.com...

Or they've copied a picture of the central base with camera assembly and pasted into a Mars picture.

I think I may have seen this. It looks like something from Star Wars, cool pic.

Yes -- If one is to look at the images in the 'eriktheawful' posted in the link above, the first images show the object in the OP, while other images show other parts of Opportunity's heat shield.

If Greer says it's aliens or a UFO or whatever, it's a safe bet to assume it's something mundane (if not totally made up).

If there was any doubt before that Greer was just an opportunist who will outright lie in order to promote his business empire built on the back of Alien visitation believers, this put that doubt to bed.

Greer is an educated man who pays attention to space science, so you have to know for a fact that HE knew that this was just a piece of the heat shield of the Opportunity rover, but he still went ahead anyway and tried to pass this off as something else mysterious.

Then again, this is the same guy who took a picture of a moth and called it an alien, and pointed to an empty field and told paying clients that even though the field looked empty, there was actually a magical UFO there that could not be seen or felt.

As I posted in the other thread, some other images from the area.

First, note, it's not the landing pad because the rover was up to 1km away by then on sol 324:

The rover took several images of the debris:

Made a pretty good impact crater when it hit.

Here's a closeup of the debris (from the NASA original)

The object in frame is very interesting. However, as others have already said, unless there's a massive optical illusion occurring, that interesting object is no more than a few feet long.

I'd love for it to be proof too, but it's not.

Unfortunately It's not a UFO.
There was a thread on this not even a week or so back here on ATS.
It's the debris from a past mars mission. 2007 I think? Don't quote me on that.
The pictures are on NASA's website.
There are close ups as well.

Ahh, there ya go. I should have checked the second page of the comments.
But Erik summed it up nicely.
