You mean you've heard of the French Revolution? France, being significantly older than the US by a couple of thousand years is not easily compared. But you are historically informed, I'm sure you also know that the United States would not have existed without France's considerable contribution.

The second agreement, the Treaty of Alliance, made the fledgling United States and France allies against Great Britain in the Revolutionary War. The French decided to back the U.S. in its military efforts until the U.S. had full independence from Great Britain.

French and British ships at the battle of the Chesapeake off Yorktown in 1781; the British fleet departed, leaving the army with no choice but to surrender. ... France played a key role in the American Revolutionary War (American War of Independence; 1775–1783).

So I guess the French were politically sophisticated enough to actually contribute to the birth of the United States!

That said, Marine Le Pen has more to do with the history of France during WWII because she and her family have often expressed support of the Vichy government, which was the puppet government installed by the Nazi's in occupied France. If you don't know about it, I suggest you research it before supporting Le Pen and her ilk.

The last hope of Europe..
But all media say the chance is low
It is low but that's what the media said about BREXIT. So maybe next time after this term.

Media also said Hilary would win the US election.

The media is the attack dog of the establishment the world over. Do not believe them in this case, the deep state is playing mind games to try and put potential voters off by saying 'don't waste your vote, she doesn't stand a chance.'

Yawn. Folks here on ATS have been "predicting" the end of the EU and the demise of the Euro for over a decade. It's total BS. Not going to happen. Watch this space. After the UK leaves and France kicks Le Pen into the wilderness it will grow stronger.

You see the problem with bulls.it is that it is literally bulls.it and thus no truth. Since there is no truth then any predictions are totally meaningless, hence all the meaningless predictions about the EU here on ATS for nearly 2 decades.

The reason why Theresa May has called an election ? She knows the utter economic nightmare that the UK is heading for and in 2020 (normal election year) less then a year after the ACTUAL REAL BREXIT the economy will be really bad.

I have to agree with you on ATS prediction status. Complete fail.

I also sincerely doubt that Le Pen will become the President of France.

What is significant is that the two-party system is on the rocks. That's one thing we can all celebrate and hope happens in the States as well.

I say don't count the chickens until they hatch.

Over here in France the people have had enough of being led like sheep by the left, the right and the media.

Traditional anti National Front towns and cities are now starting to follow the same path as many of the rural areas here and sway towards the new and improved National Front revamped by Marine Le Pen.

My wife and her family (who have in the past mostly voted for the middle man or left) are now going to cast their vote for Marine in order to see if she can actually make a change here compared to the past Gvts over the last decade or 3.

I have lived all over France and travel all over the country on very regular periods. You would be surprised at the amount of people who will not openly admit that they are going to vote for Marine!

I challenge what you state! The opposite will be true in regards to the UK economy. What happens with the EU remains to be seen. Don't be blinded by the elite controlled media mind games. Yes La Pen's chance appears low but so was BREXIT and TRUMPY! La Pen has now re-invented herself somewhat detached from the NF and break the republican front so the wall is down and there are a few things that will go against her rival and they are
1. he has a wife that was his teacher and she is 25 years older than he
2. he is centerist, right nor left so some confusion for many voters#
3. he is a eurofile and globalist
4. he is 39
5. he looks like a little #
6. he is a male which swings the lady vote to La Pen
7. he is not offering a referendum on FREXIT
8. the French have become tired of the status quo elite connected types

Having said this he may well still win with 55% of the vote. If he doesn't get 50% he will lose because that will mean a swing momentum is happening.

Well said.

I used to wave off the LePens as insignificant and with no chance of ever coming into power.
The tide has shifted in a huge way.

I think it is much like what happened in the US. Sick of the same old-same old, people are throwing it all up in the air and jumping for something totally different. You know, like I do, that in France, people are very secretive about who they vote for. But I have been confided in a couple times by friends that they surprised themselves at the last minute, in the voting booth, by voting for Marine... when it wasn't their initial plan!

It's the sentiment that it's all going to hell in a handbasket anyway that is really not to be under estimated at this time...

As for the Euro, as far as I could tell, in my little corner of France, NOBODY wanted the euro back then! And man, they took advantage of the transition to hike up all prices ten fold before people caught on. If we go back to the franc, I wonder if we'll be more vigilant this time.....

24 years older, same as Trump and his wife, Trump is 24 years older than Melania and I don't see you saying anything about that. Double standards.

4. he is 39

... and??? Many presidents/PMs have been around his age, Obama, Blair, Cameron etc.

5. he looks like a little #

Yeah, because Trump, Le Pen and May don't! LOL

6. he is a male which swings the lady vote to La Pen

Nope, women love a man who is proud of his older wife, shows strength of character, the opposite of some presidents who only like to have trophy wifes.

8. the French have become tired of the status quo elite connected types

Some. I have lots of French friends who cannot go back to a fascist like Le Pen, they remember their past well.

The last time fascists had control of France was over 70 years ago and caused by a certain Austrian fellow with an odd moustache and his fellow Nazis.

Your many French friends must be quite old?

LOL really? No, my friends have not lived through the nazis as they are all in their 30s and 40s, but their parents and grandparents did. Certain scars never heal and the memories passed on through generations.

Yeh but TRUMP is a male with a young wife (that's normal - my wife's 24 years younger than me), but a young boy of 39 with a wife who's a pensioner tells a very different story! So my standard not double because I am same as TRUMPY but not Mme, if you get my drift! And the bit about the granny wife is not about strength of character but about he still needs a mummy and needs a trophy mummy!

Well, what you have to keep in mind is that it is french people that will be voting, and in France, they value older women a lot more than the US. The women get less fat in general, for one thing, but also they see the value of a woman is largely due to her mind and wisdom- not just her body. Men with women older than them tend to brag a lot about that here.

That is not only a non-issue , it is a point in his favor.

La Pen not a young woman so with that in mind I think that the fact Mme has a mummy wife will go against him in this election. Remember he is running for president not school monitor! Having said that its going to be difficult for Pen to win but you never know!

Le Pen isn't running for president as she stood down ealrier in the week plus NF stand 0% of winning

She is indeed still running. She decided to leave the helm of her party because she wants to focus 100% on the presidency and she didn't believe she could both lead her party and at the same time win France.

If Le Pen wins... it will herald the death of the Euro sector. France will shut it's borders, Germany and the nordic countries will be overrun by foreign nationalities and that will give wind the hard right wing and force our countries back into nationalism.

I honestly have to say... as much as I hate our so-called socialist leaders (because the are elitist shills...) I fear even more the insanity of people on the right wing. They are proper #ed up in their minds.

Yes, I do know and appreciate the French and their help against Britain. Admittedly, I don't know much about current French politics. I'm a history teacher, and a big fan of the French Revolution. However, I stand by my remarks, politically the French are no more sophisticated than America. In fact, there's arguments to be made otherwise.

LOL I don't think you understand what double standards are.

Saying that it's ok for a man to have a much younger wife but not ok for a woman to have a much younger husband is double standards and it's pure sexism caused by a very insecure masculine ego.

And like Bluesma said, in France they are not even mentioning their age gap. If he loses the elections it won't be because of his marriage.
