Ciaran Martin, CEO of United Kingdom’s new cybersecurity watchdog, National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), announced plans for a government/industry formed DNS firewall to protect government and core industry internet interests at the Billington Cyber Security Summit in Washington DC earlier this week. The NCSC was formed by government mandate and though it expressly includes the private sector, the NCSC still answers to the GCHQ. They even have the stated goal of “making the UK the safest place to live and work online.”

The UK National Cyber Security Centre wants to build a “Great Firewall of Britain”

Well, can't say I'm particularly surprised, given that just about every big government in the world seems to be in the censorship and surveillance industry these days, UK and US in particular.

What that means is they will only allow traffic from outside they deem necessary and up to their standards . Isnt that what a firewall does?

After that the East China Tea Company will come along and wage an Opium War against them.

A firewall is a security measure.
What this implies is more of a propaganda check valve sort of thing.
Just need to make sure any website not under full control of the media (banks) is kept from the eye of the public.

That crazy guy standing on the corner telling you the end is near might be crazy- but he might just know something you don't.
Do you really want to leave it up to the bankers, media, and corporations to decide if you need to know what he knows?

Censorship is never for the common good, period.

A firewall IS a security method. And as I stated , it can block any sort of traffic that you want. You can even shut down ALL outside access if ya want
Do a bit of research before you respond.

Well, as the sophistication of cyber threats increase it has to be expected that governments respond. There is no suggestion this is about censorship or surveillence - besides it's only an idea at this stage. Attached is the remit if the NSCC.

Where is the line between "needed" censorship and protection? It seems only right that nothing should be censored, but there are sure to be problems with that too I guess..

Is mexico going to pay for it?

It's the sources "within" the firewall that we should be concerned with..... GCHQ itself and Menwith Hill for starters!

It sounds like this idiot is openly proposing a national level nanny state filter, to protect our fragile minds no doubt and to prevent us becoming radicalized after reading alternative news and views, counter to the official government approved and disseminated information streams.

I really wish these government type control freaks would leave our internet alone. The internet is a domain unlike the nations of our world, unencumbered by borders or lines on a map.

Christ we already have the English channel separating us from the rest of Europe geographically, and then there is Brexit in the post.

Do we really need to establish another means of division, electronic or otherwise?

Personally i think not!

The quote in the OP makes it sound like it's just a firewall around government and core industry servers. One would presume, however, that those are already firewalled.
