Phil Plait of bad astronomy mentioned the potential for some risk...granted the odds of the things happening mentioned pretty low, but they aren't 0. I'm not a physicist, but I do get a sick feeling when I think there's any potential to create what I've heard "strangelets" described as being capable of doing to the planet. The same goes for what I believe are called monopoles? Again, I'm a layperson, so just not knowing and having to trust other humans with the fate of the earth..... knowing our track record as a species.... makes me nervous.

Strangelets are theoretical. If they could exist, they would have been made in cosmic ray reactions millions of years ago. Magnetic monopoles are also theoretical, but not a threat in any sense. Discovering monopoles would mostly just make certain theoretical physicists happy.

I've heard they're theoretical, but when a daydream particle also involved world eating destruction...well, it kind of freaks out the squares such as myself.

Then there are at least a few sites, I believe linking back to the guys who wanted to sue the doors to all collides shut out there. Yes, they look sketchy and less than mainstream, but the possibilities they discuss are nightmare fuel. I happened across one last year that suggested we'd already started an unstoppable process that will increase earthquakes and one day kill the whole planet within a few years.

My calmer side says it's just garden variety internet doom porn. My not very calm and not at all trained as a physicist side , on the other hand, hyperventilates and passes out.

I genuinely hope that by "theoretical" you mean "as likely as being granted a wish by an actual fairy godmother". And not "sure, it could exist, but if it does kill us all, it will happen so fast you won't feel a thing...so no worries"

True. Failure of imagination on behalf of what are probably some pretty bright people.

I'm sure they're not stupid...just a little sophomoric. My attitude is twofold, 1) don't stir up the crazies 2) don't play with the occult.

On second thought, I guess that's kind of the same rule, just restated. Never stir the crazy pot.

Yeah, pretty much. If strangelets were going to destroy the world, it would have happened billions of years ago, before people even existed to make particle colliders. The energies we're dabbling in are still on the low side of nature.

Whole PhD theses get written about things that never really had any chance of being true... Removed from experiment and current understanding by four or five steps. Thousands of particle physics papers are produced each year, and what do you think they have to write about? They have to just come up with new ideas: what might physics look like in five dimensions? In ten? What if we imagine another kind of particle?

We have lots and lots of ideas and right now, there's almost only one game in town when it comes to providing new data (you guessed it: the LHC). For the most part it only tells us about things we already know about. It took years of data collecting to even discover the one particle we were pretty sure was already there: the Higgs. Things like micro black holes and strangelets, while neat, are 99% of the time only going to exist in the realm of somebody's thesis theory research.

Of course, the media and conspiracy blogs are going to latch onto the blown-out-of-proportion doom ideas, because they definitely can't report on the physics as it's actually understood and practiced...

Thanks for that.

I'd much rather think someone's publish or perish piece inadvertently spawned internet nightmare fuel than think for one moment that some curious cats are playing Russian roulette with the whole planet.

It is a really big machine delving into some interesting questions. But to someone who isn't a researcher in that area, the media surrounding it just makes it all look spooky at best. Add stuff like weird statues, sophomoric pranksters, and bizarre operatic films and it's not hard to see why/how there are members of the public who aren't keen on colliders.

I still contend the Shiva statue and Symmetry video are examples of massive PR failures. At the very least they're fairly tone deaf to the potential for major miscommunication.

Religiously neutral + better communication would help a lot.

I know it's unlikely, but it would be nice to have less sensationalism in science reporting, anyway.

*shrug*

The logo with the supposed 3 sixes? Are you serious?

People will see what they want to see when they are bored and want to make their lives more exciting with fictitious conspiracies.

My two friends, both are PhDs in their fields, have no idea what that video was - but said they wouldnt be surprised if it was hoaxed for people just like you *by* people just like them. They read the internet, you know. They know the DUMB theories put out there - portals, black holes, time travel, satan worship. So they reckon it was a prank just to keep you entertained. But they genuinely don't know BUT do know no one was "sacrificed' on CERN property.

I only get to meet up with them rarely now as they are incredibly busy. No doubt travelling through black hole time warps to change all the Berenstein Bear books to f**k with the ME morons!

How can intelligent people consider that entertainment? I'm sure it serves their Noble purposes. Enough of a response, good luck to you. I offered no conspiracy theories either, people can take what they want from it. My eyes and many others see the 666, nothing else to it. Believe as you wish, just as I have a right to. I'm no fan of deception and I'm not that easily entertained. More than enough said.

666 is the eyes of the lord/devil w/e

That image is from Naruto, an anime where it's not uncommon to have red eyes, however, it pokes fun at a conceptual single eye that can copy motor functions with one of the teachers, Kakashi.

A single red eye that carries special traits similar to that is almost ubiquitous in anime, and a single red eye that gives some special trait extends all the way to movies like Terminator, and even when there is no special trait, associating their eyes with power(especially power to kill) isn't uncommon either like Death Note.

They even conceptually share traits with the eye of Horus:

In Egyptian myth the eye was not the passive organ of sight but more an agent of action, protection or wrath.

Essentially an all powerful eye that is obtainable or a gift at birth with the best hand-eye coordination around, and that's just the surface of it's power.

But that isn't real. None of it is. Symbols, etc -- its all human made and means nothing unless you attribute meaning to them.

They are not divine or mystical or spiritual -- they are just man made symbols.

Also - we're talking about the number 6 in the current English writing, yes? Not the number 6 in any other human language?

So the CERN logo, comprised of what look like the 3x English number 6's are the Devils number. And not a representation of a particle entering the circular LHC. Just want to be clear on that.

How can intelligent people think this video is real? Or that the CERN logo is satanic?

It knowingly stands for evil even to this day and that's the point. I once managed a gas station and grocery stores, often working the registers. I wish I could show you pictures of how most people reacted to even a $6.66 total. Most would at least add or remove an item and have something to say about it. Anyway, I'm yet to hear of or see awesome tech not being abused, in my opinion. And I personally have no need to answer any questions this could potentially answer. But when do the people get a vote on anything real in our Democracy?

After doing some research on this, including posting questions to an ex-Satanist, I no longer believe this is anything but a hoax, perped by some nefarious ahole at CERN. A REAL Satanic ritual would be way longer than what is shown here. They supposedly don't just walk up and kill someone. There's a whole ritual that happens that can last for a while.

I will say that whoever or whomever perped this sick hoax is a psychopath, because with all the nebulous but nefarious rumors about what CERN is doing out there, to pull this kind of hoax is just pathetic.

I remember the one that always got the new guys was to get them to go into the office and ask for the keys to the jet.

The chiefs used to get so pissed at us but sometimes they would even play along and send them to another area to ask for the keys.

666 is carbon, also look into the origins of c14 cosmic radiation which is dated at the magic 10,000 years ago. the moon may well be the source of c14 as its arrival coincides with this date. Saturn/ moon matrix bonds the visible light spectrum in which we are ensnared. CERN is an attempt at breaking this imo..

To much time on there hands, are they not supposed to be students, maybe they should amp up there schedule in whatever they do there at this particle collider thing.

Well this scooby doo mystery has been solved, and as far as rituals go? Over the years I have at some times seen more potent and ill intent ones on the tubes almost daily to which millions of peoples cheered. This one was just silly. So ya, if people are disturbed by this, then they have been asleep at the wheal for a long time.

Probably students with to much time on there hands.

Hey man, carbon lifeforms, life eats life. In some ways that may just be the worse invention ever that was ever produced in all the universes combined. Life! Try it once, just so you know how much it sucks and to learn to stay away from it. No doubt that is a sales pitch in a galaxy and dimension far far away.

What this is? The control matrix. Is but controlled mayhem. Can you imagine what things would be like if you all were left to think on your own? It would be total and complete chaos, but as things stand chaos is a part of life.

And the only thing CERN is breaking so far, is the piggy bank.
