The average age of Mary has been approximated between 12 at the youngest to about 16 at the VERY latest when she married Joseph, who was likely in his early 30's (some say even as old as his 40's or 50's, but I find that unlikely). The age she had Jesus is questionable, but take that up with god. God apparently made her a teenage mother.

Jeez. It's not that I'm basing my opinion on what artists paint. Clearly if an artist painted Joseph in that way there was some justification for it in their heads beyond creative license, especially as some of them were created at a time when the church was killing people for blasphemy. It also means many other credible people believed it to be true, as evidenced by the authors who wrote about it which you conveniently chose to ignore.
