Cheapskates.

I bought my wife a diamond plated Mercedes.

You sir, are the only man who loves his wife.

You have shamed us all.

Well, I do try to espouse the true virtues of the holiday season. Shame and consumerism.

Your post reminded me of something from a million years ago....

My wife and I got married the year after I graduated high school (well, she was still a senior). Anyway, back then our Wedding Rings were the finest set of metal rings that could be purchased at one of those free-standing kiosks in the shopping mall for the enormous amount of $32 (for both, not each). They matched, that's all we cared about.

Anyway, I remember vividly that someone that I worked with (at the time she was maybe 28) said, and I quote, "You wouldn't find ME marrying some guy who wouldn't put a big enough rock on my finger."

Two decades later.... My wife and I celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary and she has all but become an "old maid."

Disclaimer: Yes, over the past twenty years we've gotten real rings. Mine a simple band but hers has grown a bit here an there over the years. Nothing too over the top though.

Edit to Add: I ended up becoming friends with the woman who'd made that statement (although every once in a while I would think of that and feel sad for her... yet still chuckle a little).

One of the biggest cons going diamonds.
They have tons of them all sat in warehouses and If they released them to be sold they would be worth pennies.
I never told my last ex wife but I bought her a fake one for our wedding ring and it looked fab
.
