Excellent post.

We are still learning.
When I was an intern (back in 2002), we went to the Glore Museum in St Joseph, MO. They have the devices that were used to "treat" people - cages, racks, restraint chairs, electric shock machines, etc. It was very frightening, indeed.

When I was a little kid, I was fascinated with "Mental Illness" (Insanity, they called it). My parents had the Time-Life series about whatever - and my favorite volume was all about how 'mad' people were treated.

We've come a very, very long way since then.

Not actually, no. Back in the 60s, there were Time-Life encyclopedic 'series'' that came out. You could subscribe and get several volumes - all with matching spines and about the same length.

Life Science Library

I believe it was "The Mind" from that series....but can't tell you for certain.
I vividly remember looking at the thing, though. Over and over.

I work at target. We do in fact sell ouija boards at the store. They are with the other board games.

This story is one of the stupidest I've ever heard of. I believe in Spirits,
I've played with a Ouija board and got spirit activity, HOWEVER,
these stupid Ouija websites or apps are not a real Ouija board, their
answers are computer generated-- STUPID.

We had a Ouija board growing up, my sister and I had some great slumber parties scaring the crap out of everyone. I think my mom still has it actually. We never had anything sinister happen, but I will say I always seemed to know what the answers would be. Maybe it has something to do with tapping into the subconscious. I think people give the boards way more credit then they need to.😜

I was possessed once.

It seems after a month of watching Star Wars, Star Trek, Farscape, Firefly, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory and Supernatural an exorcism was called in and the demon got away. I knew that priest was up to no good. *sighs* I still miss my little buddy.

Just kidding.

I've played and DM'ed Dungeons and Dragons since 1978 and have yet to get possessed.

I actually do have an Ouija story.

When I was growing up one Sunday the Pastor of the church we attended came over and at one point during the day he said he felt a lot of spiritual conflict in our house. We had had some weird things happen through the years, but really we didn't know how to properly address it.

Anyway, fast forward and one spring we re cleaning out our entertainment room. It was a room with a big leather covered bar with storage places, as well as a shuffle board and pool table and dance floor and the like. In one of the storage drawers we found an old Ouija board that was sitting there and it had somehow gotten a Christmas manager scene laid on top of it.

So my mother decided we needed to get rid of it. It was her board from years before she went to chuch, when she practiced some witchcraft. Anyway, we all gathered around as my older brother doused it with gasoline and tried to burn it. I do say tried, because it actually didn't work. Eventually the fire went out and it was undamaged.

So he doused it with water, took an axe to it and tried to burn it again. This time it did work.

The air and atmosphere of the house actually DID seem to change. We all agreed, except my father. He never seemed to be affected by anything paranormal or weird...ever...as a matter of fact, stuff never happened around him. It was like he had some kind of null field for the paranormal. I don't know if he believed in any of that or not, I never got to ask him.

Anyway, everything in our house was clear until we ended up with the big Buddha statue, but that's another story.

I find it very difficult to believe grown people actually give ojuia boards ANY credence at all. But hey, who cares what I think, right? I just think there are a whole lot more things to be worried about rather than this completely bogus nonsense. Free country, I guess, so worry about what you want to worry about. Have fun.

In the more backward parts of the world you are more likely to see these sorts of things, especially in Mexican, Peruvian, African cultures with old superstitions and heavily religious. Just a few cultures singled out but there are more. Mexico is notorious for instance of having simple people that believe in just about anything supernatural, from werewolves, chupacabra, to yes, UFO's and aliens... Usually having little to no education and even on the other end of the spectrum, having education and higher level jobs.

Simple minded people believe in simple things, like curses, magic, voodoo, witches and magic remedies... Peru has a superstitious culture and believe practically anything magical or evil...

The girl in question has probably been forced to believe in her mother's strong religious beliefs since birth, a self reinforcing delusion...

If somebody possessed by demons kills somebody, it's probably a good idea to lock them up anyway. However, you could hypothesize that not all demon possessions are violent or evil. A smart demon would keep its presence fairly undetected, in order to enjoy the benefits of being corporeal. Could be some of the most successful people are being influenced and driven to success by demons.

No just no that would be feeding and helping their delusions. I saw a clergy man tell a mentally ill person that If he accepted Jesus he would be cured of his Bi polar and schizophrenia we had to deal with the aftermath.

I think that's more a case of somebody ignorant and not properly trained trying to help in the only way they knew how. When you're a priest or minister and your hammer is Jesus, every problem looks like a nail.

Never feed delusions never.

It would be nice if we could just grab people and pump them full of drugs until they become docile enough to accept good treatment. But since that isn't a viable option, it might be a better idea to get them on your side first and help them want to get better. Telling them they're crazy might not be the best way to do that. Demons possess people because there is an empty space to fill. Fill it with something else and the demon will go elsewhere.

I don't have an opinion on whether this case is real or not, but logic would state that since people have reported possessions since antiquity that there is a good chance that such things are real and possible. Unless you think that everybody in the past was a moron--but I am sure that they'd say the same about you.

Play with fire--prepare to get burned.

Not believing in it isn't going to protect you--it will actually put you more at-risk. According to the exorcists in the Catholic Church, cases of legitimate possessions are on the rise. And, having seen someone being possessed before, I can believe it. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean that it isn't there. Evil is very real.

Calling other cultures simple-minded is very simple-minded of you. Unless you understand where they're coming from, I think that passing judgement on them is foolish. That kind of arrogance isn't going to do you any good.

Do whatever you want, but I don't see why naysayers even comment on threads like these. They must be very bored and have nothing better to do than poo-poo things about spirits and demons. You'd think that if they didn't believe in it, they wouldn't care and wouldn't even read things about the paranormal since they don't think that it's real. They can't prove that it doesn't exist--and their arguments are very hollow compared to arguments that support that there is evidence that the paranormal is real. So I don't see why they bother. Maybe they're so scared of it that they actively deny it because it makes them feel more secure in their own delusion of reality.

What does her being fat have to do with anything? Way to go slamming someone because of their weight.

Average minds discuss events.

Great minds discuss ideas.

Couple of friends of mine played with ouija board and talked to a guy who died in the vietnam war. They got his name, adress and wifes name. They called her up in California and confirmed that he died in nam and his dogs name etc. Then an evil spirit took over and demanded that one of them kill certain persons because he was the more evil of the two. That was the end of their Ouija board playtime.
The very fact that existance exists is proof that anything can become possible. We are little fishies in a pond with no idea of the evil dangers around us or what lays beyond the mysterious surface.

I once went down a list of known demon names
Since supposedly saying their name draws their attention
There were maybe 80 names
And it was an incomplete list
And I probably mispronounced 10 of them
And I openly told Belial to go F himself
Because reasons

I had a dream that night of being violated by a demon
Though I guess if you're enjoying it its not real non-con

No evidence spirits exist? Depends on what you think of the most famous science experiment that sought to prove the soul existed...that is when Watters killed different animals with ether and using an ionizing radiation detector he'd snap a picture and a dead frog would show energy exiting in the same shape as the frog. A dead dog had energy leaving in the silhouette of the dog. Cats had cat shaped ion clouds and bats had bat shaped. Even more interesting, if he REVIVED an animal after taking it out, later review of the radiation detector pictures that were snapped showed nothing if that animal were later revived.

Me, I like to hold on to the pro-Matters side but who knows what reality is or what he did in truth

I have had encounters with spirits and ouija boards before. The last time I used one was as an experiment in college for the Halloween edition of the school newspaper. We were in a "haunted" building on campus at night. One of the other journalists in the room thought that it was due to the "Ideomotor phenomenon" (Wikipedia).

The black campus safety officer who was escorting us got spooked and left the building. This is because we got a very strong response on the board (there were five or so of us) and were able to interview the entity until we decided we were through.

I had some bad after-effects from that encounter. One was a girl named Lilith that showed up in my dreams and those of my friends as well, who she got jealous of, especially if they were female.

I think that there is more going on in our world than meets the eye, especially when it comes to things of a spiritual nature.
