What rot. You need to blame the side with the tanks and the ambition. So yes, blame Germany for WW2.

Another myth.

The Spanish where the first to use concentration camps, on the island of Cuba.

Yet the British voluntarily decolonised. There was no real effort to keep the Empire together once the world moved on. There is no Empire today, only a Commonwealth that actually does some good.

The Brits was tired of war to be honest. They only won through technological advantage(rifles). The Brits today don't have that power. It is the US that has the tech advantage today. The majority of population of Canada is a mix, so I doubt you see Canada supporting war for UK anytime because then their asking for WW3.

I'm guessing the OP is either from a former colony, Argentinian or French.

I think most countries have a past they aren't proud of, but for the most part, have more than made up for it.

The fact is though, Britain has gave the world some of its best inventions:

The submarine
The steam engine
The lightbulb
The television
The computer
The internet

and many many more.

Can't blame modern society for the mistakes of our ancestors.

Britain didn't invent any of those things except the steam engine...... At least, they don't have undisputed claim to any of them.

Hey, America still gave us loads of cool stuff, a lot of countries have contributed to the modern world as far as engineering and tech is concerned......even some of the more unlikely ME countries before they became warzones.

I only mentioned British examples because the French Argie former colonist that started this thread was slating my home turf :-p

Lol the French.....one thing you guys and Americans always agree on.... The French..... Nothing more need be said!

The argies... They sure are mad about that thumping they instigated aren't they.

I mean how dare you not get beat when they start a fight!!!

Lol

The French have one of the greatest military records in the world. I challenge you to find more than a few countries that can match them in sheer number of victories, great commanders and tacticians, etc. This little meme about the French being "surrender monkeys" has to stop.

Funny thing is, it's often Americans like you parroting it. You wouldn't even exist as a country without the French. The battle of Yorktown was essentially won by the French navy.

The submarine - Debatable, but England made a vast contribution
The steam engine - Thomas Newcomen, English inventor
The lightbulb - Warren De la Rue, British astronomer and chemist
The television - John Logie Baird, Scottish engineer
The computer - Charles Babbage, English mechanical engineer
The internet (WWW) - Tim Berners-Lee, English computer scientist

I'll say it again just like I said before- Britain has no undisputed claim to any of those things, except perhaps the steam engine.

Self-indulgent nationalist wanking has no place in reality. Many of those inventions were developed, or conceived, before anyone in the UK touched them.

For instance, there are multiple people that can lay claim to the television, Internet, lightbulb, and computer. All it takes is a quick search to find all the different names attached to those things.

Sadly (or maybe not), history and invention are far more intricate than "muh nation invented dis stuff, we so awesome".

I used to get worked up over this kind of thing, and I'm still tempted to sometimes. But I realized at one point that it's silly to have excessive pride in one's background.

I didn't choose to be born what I am, and I cannot claim the achievements of others simply because they're from the same country. People who do that do it because they haven't created anything worth praising themselves.

I also used to get mad at people who insulted my country, or countries I liked, but it's all pointless. Getting mad at strangers is a complete waste of energy. There's always gonna be someone out there who hates where you come from for some silly, insipid reason.

Anyway, as to the thread topic, I'd say Britain (and their American offspring) played the largest part in creating the modern world as we know it. The technology, ideas of personal liberty, empiricism and scienctific thought- much of it can be credited to them.

But just as well, a good portion of the bad stuff can also be credited to them. The modern world has a rotten underbelly that has always festered under the surface, though some people would happily ignore it so long as the circuses continue and there's no shortage of bread.

But I think most people would agree that the OP's diatribe is hyperbolic and untrue. There have been meaner conquerors and killers than the British.
