Since I've seen a few air disasters posted here, I thought it was safe to ask something that's been bothering me. The following video is from the pilot of the show Lost. It shows a guy getting sucked into a jet engine, followed by an explosion. Has this ever happened before and is it even possible?

The way that they depict it in the show? No. The engine wouldn't still be under power after the crash and everything would most likely be on fire.

With an intact engine, it could suck someone in and destroy the engine but wouldn't immediately blow up in a huge fire ball like in the show.

Thank you. Like I said, it bothered me. Hollywood has a way of pitching woo so it's hard to know how much BS is involved.

Wouldn't necessarily destroy it. Have to change a bunch of fan blades, and some other parts, but it would probably keep producing at least some power afterwards.

When I saw your post I immediately though of this video, skip to 2 Mins 4 Secs for the action

The crazy part is that he survived that.

Pilot was looking the right direction at the right time, and had damn good reflexes.

Just to add to the 'fun videos.' It's a Tu-95 that exploded on take off or at least attempting take off.

WTH happened there?

Only a few hours to late, Zaph posted that on the last page.

The #2 engine exploded and blew the wing apart.

Zaph is it just me or did the engine appear to be giving under full performance before exploding?

I'll have to watch it again in a little but but probably. They usually give some kind of warning.

I am by no means a bear expert, but that takeoff roll looked kinda slow.

Yeah, I thought the same thing the first time. They were accelerating pretty sluggishly it seemed.

It's hard to tell because it is so dark, it almost looks like the pilot couldn't keep it on the runway and the engine impacted something before exploding as well.

The initial reports were that they went off the runway so you're probably right.

Now that I can see it on the big screen, it looked like there was an initial explosion (presumably the engine) originating in the inside port engine that then set off the larger explosion (presumably ripping into the fuel tanks) that ripped the wing in half. Since the landing gear on a Bear is just behind the engine that exploded, it cased it to go down and veer to the left.
