Spent four years on that boat. Back when it had planes that weren't all F-18s.

why does it look like the nosewheels are behind the rear wheel and the aircraft is going backwards?

The A340 has a centerline gear, similar to the DC-10-30.

Holy hell that looks terrifying for both the pilots and the firefighters. What year was that filmed? Also looks like someone really fudged that test bad, the pilots were stuck in the a/c even losing communications with ground control for gods sake. I can't imagine thats gonna be cheap to fix either.

I've seen it posted as early as 2006, but I'm not sure of the exact date that the test occurred.

I don't see how to embed it here, but The Aviationist has some amazing almost VR videos of a F-18 going off the cat and flying through the desert.

That desert flying is over HW-190, through Star Wars canyon (also known as Jedi Transition) and into Death Valley. It is the US equivalent of the Mach Loop.
I'm going there this summer too.

This is why it's always a good idea to wait when a bigger plane is in front of your tiny ass Viper.

Haha that is great. I am impressed the camaraman comples the Lancer touchdown and then returns to the Fighter like it happens all the time.

If you are going to the mach loops in UK, be sure to check the timetables and weather report !!! It's no fun stood there in the rain, you know it's summer in the UK as the rain gets warmer
