No, you just get gouged for it everywhere else in the form of taxes both open and hidden. Your cost of living is hideous.

I do alright despite the high cost of living, i know if i injure myself i can have medical help at my door within a matter of minutes, and i can rest assured after im fixed i wont have a humungous bill to pay off. Its worth it.

We do pay a lot of tax, and the cost of living is expensive, but its no different to anywhere else in the world....it effects some people more than others, and the cost of living for everyone has gone up. The benefits that it brings are worth more than most would pay in tax. £3000 for an MRI...not in the UK its not...FREE! Cancer care must go into the £100,000s...but its free here.

When compared with other developed countries, the U.S. performs worse on life expectancy and infant mortality [source: Carey et al.]. It also tops the list of deaths deemed "preventable" with adequate early care and diagnosis [source: Harrell]. The typical U.S. citizen has far fewer doctor appointments each year than citizens of other countries, yet pays more for the privilege. When an American citizen spends the night in the hospital, it costs 5.6 times more than it would cost a person in Japan [source: Clifton]. And to top it all off, the U.S. spends $2,797 more per person every year than other industrialized countries, even though 47 million of those people are uninsured [source: Clifton].

Free healthcare works in the UK and many other countries. The few pence (cents) you pay each week towards the running of it are worth it in my opinion. Even if it cost £10 a week, its still worth it.
We dont see the money that pays for it so we dont miss it.

I would make the same choice this man made. Whether I could afford it or not.
Of course they will never get so far as to diagnose me. And that's the best way
to keep yourself from getting cancer IMO. Don't get diagnosed. I will die of
something for sure. But it won't be the medical profession. Poke'n and prod'n,
hey, lets see if this works? Cluck cluck quack! None for me thanks.

I just want to live while I'm alive.

But as I see the indications are for the most part, some jackass
some where on this planet must have a problem with that.

Its the same here in the UK in regards to free healthcare. You dont have to show anything at all, just register with a doctor and then ALL your healthcare is free....some people even get boob jobs, tummy tucks, gastric bands, nose jobs and other sorts of comsetic surgery for free. The only thing you have to pay for really is the dentist...but they are subsidized so your not paying the full price.

This is why i find it so weird to have to pay for healthcare, where do all the tax $ go?? On the military?? Clearly they have their priorities wrong. I cant imagine having to budget for being ill or getting injured.

I hope for him too, but how many aren't going to be featured as part of the news? So sad. Move to Canada. Lots of room here for people that want to work and need healthcare!

Way to sensationalize, your title is very misleading.

Though I can agree with your theory of what the ACA is doing to individuals in America, I cannot however agree with your title nor your OP.

Lastly, who uses Fox News, as if they aren't known to sensationalize themselves on EPIC levels.

Give me a break. Please stop acting like anything on FOX news isn't credible information. When you have some facts about what they are misrepresenting about a specific issue then site it, point out why it's false and make a claim, until then, spare us your rhetoric on how dare somebody use FOX news as a source.

Can you support the argument against what FOX reported? If you can I'll listen, until then, all I hear is dramatization where you claim people sensationalize when you have no basis for an argument against what is being presented. Attack the information, not the source.

Governments don't want a large % of younger to older. my guess is a ratio of 5:1. To have that ratio people who are getting old or suffering from a medical condition that affects their ability to work must die. The only caveate against that is those who are wealthy enough to pay their own way. This is actually not a brave new world, the middle ages, and industrial revolution worked the same way - basically a slave population a wealthy elite. Them who get old or sick in the slave caste are toast.

You are looking at the wrong thing. Wages are one thing but what you want to compare is the cost of living against wages.

Canada -
Minimum wage in Saskatchewan $10.00 Minimum wage in North Dakota $7.25
Cost of a loaf of bread $2.75 Cost of a loaf of bread $2.09
Cost of a litre of milk $1.87 Cost of a litre of milk $1.05
Cost of a litre of gas $1.27 Cost of a litre of gas $.99

So while we in Canada make 1.3 times more than you.
Our bread is 1.3 times more expensive.
Our milk is 1.8 times more expensive.
Gasoline is 1.3 times more expensive.

Other added bonuses are:
Free healthcare
Longer holidays and more paid workplace benefits.
Lots of jobs.

Here is a site to compare anyplace on Earth.

To respond to a series of PM's which is roughly ontopic to this post.
I don't think "American's are dumb", I've been to the United States and lived there for a few months and seen various aspects of society. Most people are very smart however in my opinion fail to see the full picture or feel scared to stand up to authority's acting beyond their powers. Its a beautiful country and I hope one day I can return. Yes Australia and the rest of the developed world have problems however you can't keep looking through rose coloured glasses at your own country.

What amazes and frustrates me is that you put with such nonsense from your government and don't demand the basic necessities of life, such as free health care. Obamacare no matter if you are a republican or democrat is a total scam orchestrated by Insurance companies for insurance companies forced upon you by a capitalistic government. It is sold to you as 'humane' and beneficial to your health inline with other countries, while it is nothing further from the truth.

Another point is that you actually listen and to an extent trust your politicians, if you tune into Australian politics we openly vilify members directly and for the most part make them accountable for their actions forcing them out of their positions. English politics isn't to far behind.

How people accept it is 'ok' for people to starve and die because they don't have 'insurance' is beyond me. This man who is suffering and has a name and a family who love him. We are only seeing ONE person in this story, I would bet everything that their are thousands of people being turned away and rejected quality health care every day because they didn't have the "premium insurance package". Your treating your lives like a TV cable bundle package. If this was your son/daughter and husband/wife you would be screaming anarchy, not accepting a death verdict from a weaselled out insurance policy. This is no different to New Orleans where your government chose to lock American citizens inside the superdome and expected them to eventually kill each other while they turned a blind eye, as opposed to render timely medical assistance. Where is the accountability here? Where else in the world would this have been so openly accepted? Children in Africa are even getting better healthcare free of charge.

I am not a communist or anti-war advocate as some have pointed out, there are cases where I believe war is unfortunately needed, however I have major problems with the United States openly bombing and overthrowing countries in the name of "freedom" holding this moral highground.

/end rant

Americans are only dumb if they get an illness. The average American is one serious illness away from becoming bankrupt due to healthcare. How many other countries can claim the same? Seriously, I couldn't find any others.

precisely.

socialized healthcare isn't free, and tbh i'd rather have the freedom to choose what i spend my money on than it taken from me.

Hey somebody nailed it. I've lived in Germany. I have seen "socialized healthcare". You bet I would pay more taxes for that. That is NOT what the ACA is. A state sponsored scheme for the capitalistic gain of a few at the expense of hardship, and possibly death sentences for millions is exactly what this is. Plus... Bonus, they get to crush that potentially over-mighty, and unruly middle-class under heel even more. Even further, people are STILL defending this crap. Scam is too frivolous a word to categorize this (the only complaint I have with your "rant"). This is an economic and moral travesty.

I am terrified personally. My husband and I both have chronic life threatening health issues, and I don't know if anybody knows just how this train wreck is going to pan out. Certainly not the people who wrote and passed the da*n thing. And even more certainly, not the ordinary people with egg on their face, who had been arguing for this blood-sucking legislation; now they are far more interested in saving face and blaming "the Republicans", instead of admitting that this is a disaster, they fell for it, and now WE need to fix it. Same old divisive party parlor tricks are working on the rabble again it would seem. They are going to get away with it too. In four of five years people will forget it was any other way.

How is the title misleading? If he cannot afford his hc plan, due to his insurance company raising his premium because of Obamacare, then he has literally been given a death sentence. As a parent and wife, I know what I would do for my family. The big O has completely violated everything American. I feel for this man and his family. I cannot imagine watching a loved one die just because we could not afford the new health care, and we had to feed our family. Even Reid said, "Why would we want to save one cancer patient (I realize this is not verbatim)?" What a tragedy for the ones already suffering and the many more to come. What a violation to make me, or anyone for that matter, pay for something that I cannot afford. "No, you don't have to buy this gum, but there will be a $5 tax for not buying the gum." How much more un-American can you get?

Agreed, isn't it odd in a society that we are so big on humanitarian missions.....yet, at the same time we tax and burden the majority of the society.....I don't understand, I just really don't understand.....with our 'giving' attitude, shouldn't we be the society that says 'Bob, you caught a raw deal, I'm doc John and will take care of you'.....It isn't about socialism or right and wrong, but about humanity. This entire system was setup to cancel some and force others to enroll to pad the pockets of the insurance companies that pushed this system in the first place and Oh Right, Inflated Medical Costs To Begin with.....What happened to the local doctor that made house calls....~sigh~....that everyone could afford or he would take a chicken.

This just occurred to me, the new health care system law is almost like population control, those who can't pay the new premiums are deemed unworthy of care and are allowed to have nature take its course instead of man kind saving them.

This is one of the few reasons I still like my country...the NHS.

Everybody is entitled to life saving treatments for things like cancer, without facing a hefty bill at the end of it.

That is of course until the bloody Tories privatise it and we lose possibly one of the last great British institutions.

Nobody should have to pay to carry on living.

This happened prior to the ACA too. It happened in my family, I was forced to watch my mom get dropped by her insurance as soon as something serious came up, get denied from other health insurance, and then die slowly due to a perfectly treatable degenerative disease. Of course the health costs could have always been paid out of pocket but I had no money for that and neither did she.

It's a terrible thing to watch a loved one die over the course of months, especially when there's a good chance that person can go on and live for another couple decades. All because you don't have enough money to pay for medications, at the time I went homeless to save rent money and skipped many meals to try and come up with payments, but it wasn't enough. The ACA isn't perfect, it's based on insurance companies that let this type of thing happen. Even still, the rules put in place will make this type of tragedy happen less often.

Other than that, that's life in America. The only developed country in the world where this type of thing can happen.

I've never considered the costs of my treatments, until I read threads like this and watch breaking bad. For me its something I don't even take into account. I must have cost the NHS millions over the past 12 years. I think I'd probably be dead if I was American. I certainly wouldn't have had the treatments available to me on many insurance policies. British tax payers I thank you. I can't imagine the stress involved in having to account for every scan, check up, blood test and surgery involved.

I'm not sure how obama care works, but it is not really socialist in any way.

Boob jobs are free, but dental work costs?? Regardless of my opinion on socialized medicine, assuming an acceptence of it, why would they pay for completely unnecessary boob jobs and the like, but not necessary dental work?
