Unless born before 1970, most will have not experienced a swarm.

Could a major EQ in California upset the Yellowstone Caldera? I remember hearing something about the yellowstone supervolcano being over-due for a massive eruption, as well as California being overdue for a massive EQ... A devastating combination indeed.

I'm not sure if it can upset Yellowstone, a big enough quake probably could. But California has it's own much closer supervolcano. If it was going to upset a supervolcano my guess would be on the Long Valley Caldera rather than Yellowstone but who knows.

I lived in CA for 10 years, that one on the needle was a l o n g one. Looked sizable too. Man, I'd be really nervous if I was out there. Brawley also has a massive prison complex on the north side of town. I'd not want to be in that town if things went really south there.

Update 23:42 UTC : - New M4.7 aftershock, one more of an impressive number of aftershocks - Some trailers are simply being knocked off from their foundations

I know I keep saying this but wow!

It's amazing to watch this unfold, I have mixed emotions but I will also keep saying I'm hopeful this is nothing but after shocks that will last a couple of days and be nothing but a memory.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

It's not an error as there were two events. The times are far enough apart for that. But there may be some revision in the magnitudes as SCEC had them as a 4.6 and a 4.8, but has now revised them to a 4.8 and a 3.4:

3.4 2012/08/26 16:34:50 33.002N 115.544W 5.2 5 km ( 3 mi) N of Brawley, CA
4.8 2012/08/26 16:33:25 33.039N 115.523W 12.2 9 km ( 5 mi) N of Brawley, CA

Source: Southern California Earthquake Data Center

There is going to be a lot of checking and double-checking going on and doubtless more quakes will gets their mags revised down or up -- and times could get altered slightly as well, like the two-second revision on one of those quakes. This is quite common and not unexpected.

They are all very shallow - far more vicious than deeper ones! Even 4's are scary when they're shallow and close - I've not surprised there is some damage happening.
