I do consider it a lot better that nations size each other up on the sports ground rather than the battlefield.

yeah, the olympics are pretty jacked. if you do some research it was actually hitler who got them going again after a long break from the olympians of greece i think. he designed the ring's and a whole bunch of other stuff.
I remember the olympics in vancouver there were allot of protests how people in the streats were starving but the city was spending all it's money on the olympics and trying to keep "undesirable's" out of the limelight and out of the way of visiting traveler's in the city. I wont be watching the olympics, I could give a # less. could be doing something meaningfull like reading or going outside. "pass the torch of "illumination", pfff riiiight" youre totally right OP, the whole thing is just a bunch of ritual's and ceremonys, subconcius or even flat out in your face if youre aware of it.

Just one flaw in that:

There are those who like me have not watched in 2 decades nor care about it however that "worship" just may very well fit the diehard fans of it.

Sports is already a complete and utter waste of time. Combine that with nationalism AND the most blatant commercialism going and you have the Olympics. Olympics = Global Facepalm of Humanity.

I would LOVE it if ET chose to visit just them and scooped up every single athlete, spectator, manager, coach, as well as every single other lout participating on any level whatsoever (this includes you in tv land) and whisked them off to parts unknown. They could be deposited there in all their glory and left to their own devices. Good news for Planet Earth.

They're not a waste of time. Have you ever been part of a team or been involved in a sport for exercise and entertainment?

While I agree that athletes are ridiculously overpaid and often behave like irresponsible children..sports are part of the culture of the human species. It's like saying writing poetry or painting is a complete waste of time..take your pick.

I suggest you try a sport. You don't have to "worship" it--just enjoy it and enjoy the health benefits. I'm not even the sporty type at all and can't stand obsessing over daily sports news. But learning how to play golf out in the fresh air, sunshine, and green grass where critters abound is hardly what I call a waste of time.

As for the Olympics, who knows. I've only seen threads on ATS pertaining to it so I'm sure those waters have already been muddied for me haha. I will not be watching them though. Never have. They never really interested me. I'm a huge hockey fan but Olympic hockey never really interested me either. It feels so fake and dirty for some reason. Maybe there is something to the OP after all

Hitler? Hitler was born in 1889. The Modern Olympics were first revived in France as an annual event between 1796-1798 as "L'Olympiade de la Republique", further revived in the UK during the 1800's, with the first Modern Olympics being held in Athens in 1896. That would make Hitler 7 years old - pretty damn impressive on his part!

Yes, I have been. It is by virtue of that experience that I made that comment.

Personal endeavor is another thing altogether. Team sports as a character builder (remember "sportsmanship"? not an aspect of sports anymore, is it?) is a very useful tool. But it is not where a person makes their living. There is no contribution to humanity in it.

Commercial sports is absolute trash. It's entertainment. It's as pathetic and weak as Hollywood.

The Olympics are a waste on every level and a serious embarrassment to thinking people everywhere. But hey, it's your call. My call is to ignore the whole affair and leave the shame to others.

it is not something for all of us, but people that train their bodies and hone bodies are a special kind of people- for other people it might be the nobel prizes.

I like the Greek gods though, myself. The olympics though, to me, is more about competition and the ability of the human body than it is about worshipping any gods.

Honestly, to me, and it's just my opinon, but some people carry the whole thou shall have no other gods a bit too far and see pagan worship as evil to the core and then see it everywhere.

Real pagan worship doesn't look much like the olympics- well maybe the opening ceremony a bit.

No one has to watch or participate though. So just don't if you feel it isn't right.

Its not just the symbolism that enslaves the people. But the costs the games have on the community/people and nation. Taxes have to be raised, people have to move out of their homes and so on, just so that we can have this worship/tradition.

Not to long ago there was a documentary about the people who had to leave their community/homes in the UK just to make way for these games.

That's an interesting theory! Makes you wonder why some groups out there really think it's right to use violence to attack the Olympics to try and stop them. Maybe they know something the rest of us don't?

If that's the case though, they still need to learn that you can't fight evil with evil...
