The US is looking for contractors to quickly carry out work on the USS Ponce.

They want the ship outfitted so it can help support other ships working near the Strait of Hormuz.

And people still live under the illusion that war does not generate money.

This was mentioned by other members in threads related to this new Iranian crisis, but this piece of news seems to confirm their objectives, if confirmed by western sources.

Again, the serious timeline for this year seems to be around May(deployments near Iran) up to July(when the sanctions start being applied, and Iran will/won't fulfill their threat of closing the straight).

I still find it amusing that a Russian media source has more information on our military activity than our own MSM.....

Another big target for Iran, what military guys dont understand is that iran does not need to sink a carrier; a whole lot of ships sunk in the straits will make navigation through them impossible.

What will be the cost to Iran after this. It will pi$$ off a lot of oil producers in that part of the world to say the least.
Nothing is free, and every action has a reaction.

Guerella tactics that have worked on land (sporadic and fragmented attacks against conventional convoys) would be well suited for naval operations. American armadas are designed to fight other naval and air armadas and are vulnerable to assaults by fast attack craft, including small submarines and jetboats.

The only difference is that when it comes to navy engagements, the targets are much larger and more expensive. You don't need to sink a ship, just damage it in order to have it sent back for repairs. Any successful attack on a US ship will have consequences in the media too, damaging support for the war and undermining the idea that the American navy is invincible. Just look at what happened when a small boat blew up alongside the USS Cole- pales in comparison to what a naval mine, torpedo or anti-ship missile could do.

-----

As for the OP, this ship is supposed to be retrofitted to be a command centre for special ops in the region. Attacking it until it is out of commission would be a significant blow, but special operations wouldn't be affected all that much considering the flexibility of their operational conditions.

The Navy isn’t deploying a “mothership” in the Persian Gulf for SEALs and other special operations forces, contrary to reports by a number of news organizations, the service’s top fleet-readiness commander said.

The Ponce is “not going over there as an alternate command ship; it’s not going over there as a special operating force ‘Death-star Galactica’ coming through the Gulf,” Fleet Forces Command commander Admiral John Harvey said at a meeting with reporters yesterday. “It’s going over there as” an interim staging base until a newer vessel can be purchased.

Exactly....

What civilians don't understand is that Iranian oil tankers wont be able to ship their oil for Indian Gold from the bottom of the strait.

In all seriousness, Iran has deployed three new subs recently.

Iran Deploys 3 New Submarines Taking Total To 11 Known

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian state TV says the country has added three more domestically-built submarines to its naval fleet.

The Sunday report said the vessels were delivered to the Iranian navy in southern port of Bandar Abbas. It said the submarines were from the Ghadir class, of which Iran already has four.

They are pretty small. One diesel engine.
Good look at them here

Lol.. this picture isn't so much a group huddle as a picture of how much workspace they have in these subs:

Ill interject......

ISLAMABAD – Secretary Petroleum Ijaz Chaudhry came up with disappointing news for the gas-starved country on Tuesday, saying that Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, which was expected to be completed by June of this year, has been delayed by well over two years.

IP gas pipeline project delayed

Not ANYTIME soon.......

Fair enough.

A few questions though.

1.) Will it be done before this "WAR" breaks out?
2.) Will India be so quick to become so reliant on of all places Pakistan?
3.) If said "WAR" does break out would this pipeline be cluster and/or smart bomb proof?

The deal is. So many are so convinced that Iran is such a mythical strong power and would cause so many casualties [Reminds me of the ramblings of Baghdad Bob] but that's the topic of another thread. Then if that's true then if war breaks out the only real option to defeat Iran would be to wage Total war.

Total war will be required to bring such a powerful beast down.

The world hasn't seen total war in over 67 years.
Let's hope we wont have to ever again

eh?

Looking at what people say around ATS, they clearly don't.

The same way talibans were an easy opponent? The same way Iraq was going to be an walk on the park?

Don't underestimate your enemies. Never.

If that pipeline is destroyed, it will hurt pakistan more than it will hurt Iran, and they have nukes. Also how do you expect the navy to defend the oil tankers from navigating the straight? Those ships do not have any defensive weapons on board which would force the Navy to be close to the strait.
