Hey, it's not BS. It's just raw data, from computer autolocations. Much is man made activity. Relax, and just go back to using the USGS and EMSC lists, and we'll all be fine, promise.

I used Earthscope a couple of
times, didn't care for the layout
so I trashed it. So you are saying
they listed 2 quakes in the gulf
that didn't happen? That is upsetting
to say the least.

I said:

So far I pick 4 and found 4 probable errors. I think I will scrub that site. They are all computer generated and we know what computers are like!!

So not exactly errors but like the EMSC stuff that is for seismologists there is erroneous and superseded data although most of what i found was erroneous in the sense that it was misinterpreted data.

Yes....I knew that couldn't be right...I usually just read what you guys write, because I know it will be correct!
I don't know how to read a seismograph....

Yeah looks like that Earthscope is pretty rough when it comes to accuracy.

Sure USGS miss a few, but generally they are pretty reliable, (even if it takes 8 days to get the magnitude right
)

I note that todays "New Caledonia" quake has been moved ( by everyone) to the other side (NE) of the South New Hebrides Trench and is now called "SE of the Loyalty Islands"

I'm positive it was on the SW side before.*
You would have to screenshot every entry, if you wanted to catch all the preliminary errors and changes on the lists.

S'pose thats why they are called "Preliminary"

* yeah went back and looked at my post a few pages back, it was

Stealthycat, I can't give you a diagram at the moment at home on the dreaded dial up for the rest of the weekend. Think of reading a seismo this way. Take a bobblehead on a dashboard of a car - put a pencil in it's mouth - put a piece of paper moving past in a straight line on rollers going across moving like film in your old fashion reel camaras. ok - so your driving along on smooth pavement and all you get is a straight line going along the moving paper - then WHAM, Pot Hole - bobble head shakes violently, you get a massive spike on the paper - and then as the bobble head slows bobbling, the shakes lines get smaller and smaller until you have a flat line again
Whala, you have just read the instrument showing a quake.

Did that make sense?

don't be sorry

took them long enough!
on the phase data page it says

Generated 2011 NOV 12 at 02:11 UTC

thats the one I posted 3 pages back that they had missed
Geofon had it though 9+ hrs ago , but it has been revised up from 5.0 after manual review.
theres a SNZO LISS graph on my post, sure looked bigger than a 5.0 when I seen it this morning.

I came on just to post this piece of irrelevance because i thought the name was interesting (- OK funny), but it took me a minute or two to twig that it was from the JMO data as I don't normally have that displayed.

The revised quake

and the one the previous day. Makes sense why the 11th was 'moved'

Curious. The value on the centroid tensor solution for that one is 6.1 Mw, yet looking at the phase data on the surface wave calcs (LR) I would have said those averaged around 5.7 or lower

The body wave tensor solution puts it a 5.9 Mw

The eP values are for the most part mid 4 or less so I don't think this one is 5.9. I am going to wait 7 days and see if it gets dropped to about 5.7 Mw, or possibly less.

Of course I could be wrong

It is fairly obvious from the past two days that the seismo is fried. Actually looking at the BHZ channel it seems to be one single interference signal that is causing this. KIP.IU.10.BHZ.2011.316

The LHZ channel seems to have flat-lined KIP.IU.00.LHZ.2011.316

If TA is right and the signal is calibration then this plot version shows that signal to be just that.

As I said yesterday that instrument has got issues so forget it for the time being.

You can always check out the many different channels available here to find out what is going on.
