You have two sides. The first side being the people that don't see this as an issue. They believe that yes, the flag is an important symbol to the United States, but not so important that if it's not visible in a measly press conference that the New World Order is imminent and President Obama is a socialist un-in-de-whatever-patriotic jerkwad. The second side is just the opposite of that. Since the flag wasn't in the background it means that President Obama is intentionally or unintentionally insulting the American people and that he is a socialist and is trying to denationalize the United States, argh blah blah blah!

In other words, some people are just a wee bit too sensitive, and need to find other things to bitch and moan about

Even better - I see a symbol of the United States in that picture. You know - THE PRESIDENT.

That's where people come in. I am certainly not saying that every American must fly a flag, or frankly that every American should think it is important.

Feeling that way would be contrary to what the flag represents.

However, when it comes to the President, a person that chose to campaign and chooses to represent us to the rest of the world, it should not be "optional" in my opinion. He chose to run for office -- we, the People, chose to allow him to.

Being President of a country is choice and if elected, a privilege. I believe the President of every country, including ours, should always stand by the very symbol of the country that he/she represents and with it, carries the blood of those that have died in order for him to be able to even call himself President of this, or any, great country.

As a Veteran and a member of the American Legion, respect needs to be given to the symbol of our country, the American Flag. If you do not agree then leave.

It is everyone's personal freedom to agree or disagree whether the Flag should have behind our President. My personal opinion? I am appalled the American Flag was not present.

I will be the 1st to admit, I do not agree with most of his policies and the direction our country is going, BUT, the office of the President does need to at least have the respect of the people. It is us, the people of this country, that need to voice our opinions, not just by writing on this website or posting a blog, but by writing our leaders to express our displeasure.

Change can happen.

I hope that our President catches wind of this mistake and tells the American people it will not happen again.

Maybe we should just appoint a Presidential flag bearer that follows Obama around everywhere so everyone can calm down.

And by saying that you're essentially stomping the flag into the dirt. If you don't endorse the freedoms that the flag represents, then the flag is interchangeable with any dictator's flag.

Why are so many people so protective of the flag, but are a bit less supportive of that idea of "liberty" and "freedom" when it comes to the symbol of that liberty?

Well you know what...men fought for my right to be FREE...that includes being free to...well...not respect whatever I please.

I do respect the flag...I would never personally dis-respect it. But I don't get all bent out of shape because it wasn't on a stage at a press conference.

Symbols are just that...a SYMBOL of an idea. The IDEA is important...not the SYMBOL.

It may surprise a lot of you, but presidents don't PERSONALLY oversee every aspect of every event in which they appear.

They have staffs that are given responsibility for details, such as the presence and position of the American flag.

It is very possible that the omission was due to some rather low-level staffer who didn't successfully deliver the flag on time.

Should the president say "Oh noes! I refuse to speak if there is no flag displayed where it can appear prominently in every photo op." ????

I'm pretty Obama didn't do the interior decorating of the room prior to his entrance. Seriously folks, let's discuss his actual actions on important subjects. What is this?

I didn't read this whole thread.. don't have time.. just wanted to say that I believe the press conference was about the Gulf Crisis.. not something the US should be proud of.. and so subliminally tying the crisis to the US flag is what they were trying to avoid and is most likely the reason it was removed. It has nothing to do with the president's patriotism. Notice he is wearing the flag pin. I'm not a fan of Obama, but I can't stand it when people read false meaning into something.

I'm starting to believe we should publicly call for Obama's resignation. He's turning out to be one of the worst president's in our history and in my opinion, one of the most un-American president's to date.

Holding any time of press conference without the American flag in the background is an insult to the American people. And this is only one of the horrible actions by this president.

Apparently he's also helping negotiate a UN Small Arms Treaty which is due in 2012 that would effectively limit our 2nd Amendment by an INTERNATIONAL treaty.

I dare say I'm starting to think the Bible is actually correct, that Obama is a false prophet, and that he is also the anti-christ. Can't prove this yet, though.
