Member Son of the lost maji says that the last time this happened, it smelt like vanilla, not gas.

There are also sirens going off all over the city as well as in NJ.
It's odd how a smell can diffuse thoughout an entire city.

ConEd saying there are no system leaks.

NJ officials are saying it's coming from Manhattan.

Manhattan officials are saying it's coming from NJ.

New reporters headed toward NJ are saying the smell is less the further they get from Manhattan.

I'm hearing that it's starting to smell strong in the Wall Street area.

East-side, and into Brooklyn/Queens... the smell is slight.

Maceys Herald Square was closed and evacuated, as well as some surrounding stores (massive shopping district).

Some word-of-mouth reports that people are getting sick (typical sickness feeling from natural gas).

Oh my gosh!!!

What do you all think about the ominous pictures of New York?

I dont like looking at them- I have a bad feeling this morning.
I hope and pray this all goes away.

Its rainning cats and dogs in the North East, a real toad strangler.

What a depressing day all around.

Some reports that the smell is now weaker in midtown, and getting stronger in the upper west-side.

Lots of fire vehicles headed to the west village area.

Word-of-mouth reports that trains exiting Grand Central Terminal are packed as people head home... this is off-peak so there are not many trains.

Continued reports of breathing problems and sicknesses.

Stay safe.

No report of alarms from all the air-quality monitors installed throughout the city after 9/11.

Conflicting reports of the smell getting stronger in some areas and weaker in others.

The rain, high humidity, and lack of breeze is causing whatever it is to linger.

Is the odor headed North or South?

North... a low 6mph northerly wind.

Many are reporting that the odor is stronger inside than outside.

Press conference with the Mayor starting now.

Mayor Bloombert is saying there was indeed a small gas leak near Bleecker street, but was not large enough to cause the widespread odor.

I love that they have to say that it isn't terrorism. That would not likely be the first rational possability, yet it's the first thing people assume.

I smell gas..... Terrorists!!

Anyway, what's the does anyone posting actually smell it? SO, I'm looking in your direction. Does it smell like something that would actually get people ill, or is this just complaining in the hopes of getting attention, or a possablie settlement when it's all over?
