WASHINGTON — Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who this fall became the first speaker to be ousted from power in the middle of a congressional term, said Wednesday he will resign from office at the end of this month.

His exit is a blow to his successor, Speaker Mike Johnson, and House Republicans, further cutting the already narrow GOP majority and making passing legislation in 2024 even more challenging.

There were rumors after his ouster that McCarthy would be resigning from office. The question was whether or not it would occur before the end of the term. Well, he's now answered that question.

McCarthy has announced that he will be leaving office at the end of the month. This is a major blow to the GOP's narrow majority that already took a blow with the expulsion of George Santos.

If both those seats get filled with Democrats, it will be even worse for the GOP.

This may have just killed any hope for Comer to get his impeachment inquiry off the ground.

He was demoted. Of course he's going to leave. No surprise.
I imagine we'll see him on some corporate board soon.

I don't blame him. Nobody appreciates a good RINO any more. What the hell is wrong with people?

With any luck, the republicans will keep shooting themselves in the foot, the dems will become the narrow majority, and you folks can finish destroying the country.

I can't decide if we should rename the country The Peoples Republic of America or The United States Socialist Republic.

As I understand it, George Santo getting expelled left the Republicans with only a majority of 3 in the house. So, if Kevin McCarthy leaves at the end of the year, the Republicans will only have a majority of 2, with the prospect of an empty seat until 2025.

Not good for Speaker Johnson.

It looks like the Governor of California must file a writ of special election within 14 days and then the election must be held within 140 days.

Maybe, Maybe not.

law.justia.com...

1773. When a vacancy occurs in the office of Representative to Congress, or in either house of the Legislature, the Governor shall within 14 calendar days after the occurrence of the vacancy issue a writ of election to fill the vacancy; provided, that when such vacancy occurs in a congressional office after the close of the nomination period in the final year of the term of office, a special election may be held, at the Governor's discretion; and provided, further, that when a vacancy occurs in a legislative office after the close of the nomination period in the final year of the term of office, no special election shall be held.

Jan 1, 2024 would have been the first day of McCarthy's final year of the term of office. I think, but I'm not sure, a special election would be done at Governor Newsom's discretion. Also, I don't what the "nomination period" of an elected officials final year is.

How are Democrats going to blame Republicans for everything that is going wrong in this country if the Republicans loose even more of the very little power they have?

I assume they will just have the social/news Media lie even more for them.

Who knows, maybe he'll run for the Senate. He's earned it. He can run against Katy Porter and Adam Schiff for Feinstein's seat.

INSIDE BASEBALL...

Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed [SEE HERE] that he is leaving congress at the end of this year and will not seek reelection.

This announcement follows significant sunlight upon the GOPe wing of the DC Uniparty, as the big ugly battle between the voting base and the detached professional Republican apparatus rages on.

Based on policy advocacy and votes registered, there are approximately 100 establishment GOP House Republicans, who represent DC interests, and approximately 100 Republicans in the House who honor the wishes of their constituents.

It is a pretty even split. However...

It was only a couple of months ago you were praising McCarthy for being such a great friend of Trump's.
