Number 10 has said it will not apologise for its approach to "energy security" this morning - with Greenpeace saying its protest is against the prime minister's support for North Sea oil extraction.

Greenpeace activists have covered Rishi Sunak's North Yorkshire home in oil-black fabric after climbing on to the roof of the property.

Four activists used ladders and climbing ropes to reach the roof of the manor house in Kirby Sigston before unfolding the 200sq m of fabric.

Two of the environmental campaign group's activists also unfurled a banner with the words "Rishi Sunak - Oil Profits or Our Future?" across the grass in front of the mansion.

The group was acting in protest against the prime minister's "backing for a major expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling" - where it will grant 100 new licences off the coast of Scotland.

The tactics and stupidity of the greenpeace activists don't surprise me. What I find hilarious are their demands for the Prime Minister of the UK to apologise for not playing dice with the energy needs of the country and its energy self-sufficiency.

Another blow to the green and environmental activist agenda a few weeks after Sweden said wind and solar power are too unstable to meet the nation’s energy requirements and make the shift back to nuclear power.

www.bbc.co.uk...

How is the UK's energy is produced?

In 2022, the majority of the energy used within the UK - 78.4% - came from coal, oil and gas. These are known as fossil fuels

Coal 3%
Oil 36%
Gas 39.3%
Nuclear 6.1%
Bioenergy & Waste 9.6%
Wind 4.1%
Solar 0.7%
Hydro 0.3%
Other 0.9%

It seems the activists have climbed down and have been arrested by the Police.

Got to love the crack security at #10 Downing, if eco-warriors can pierce through the back yard, perhaps they need a guard dog.

The UK says yes to new oil and yes to fossil fuels. The dependence of the country in fossil fuels in 2022 was 78.4%. That says it all regardless of the desperate attempts by the Greenpeace activists.

Though United Kingdom petroleum consumption fluctuated substantially in recent months, it tended to decrease through May 2022 - April 2023 period ending at 1,373 thousand barrels per day in April 2023.

Greenpeace activists and mansions covered in black fabric aside Sunak is completely out of touch with the reality of the everyday average UK citizen by my guess.

78.4% dependence on fossil fuels in the UK. The world has a dependency of over 80% on fossil fuels and nobody wants to play dice with the energy needs of their countries casing a potential disaster.

In the UK, dependence on wind power is 4.1% and on solar 0.7%. At best, these are miniscule supplements, unreliable and very costly. No wonder why Sweden doesn't want to rely even at the smallest level on them and shifted back to nuclear energy.

Applying to both the so-called activists and politicians by my guess.

In Greenpeaces's defence Sunak's family struck a £1.5Bn deal with BP just before the announcement, his wife owns a £400m stake with and InfoSys she has a £690m stake in struck similar deals with other big oil companies like Shell - it's one of the most corrupt deals in the history of UK politics.

And Sweden's shift was 'no new oil' why do you think that is?

my argument is they make it easy to despise both sides and both parties they should have invested in the small modular reactors route 2 decades ago.. its the only way we can affordably switch off the gas..

at least they made the investment in the 70s to get the country off town gas and switch to natural gas now they are back to suggesting a modern form of town gas is the answer.. when it only takes us backwards..

Greenpeace do have a point regarding Rishi's wife's vested interest in the Oil industry.
And yes, we do have to start reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, but we have to be realistic in our approach and have a well thought out and robust plan before committing to anything.

At least these protesters targeted one of those responsible unlike those Just Stop Oil tossers who are doing far more harm than good - Trust Fund Tarquin's I think Carpy calls them - who just seem intent on pissing everyone off.
Absolute knobheads.

I agree.

Modular reactors do indeed seem to be a step in the correct direction.

Short of fusion power ever becoming an actual thing.

Which is always just 10 years down the road.

I tend to think that nuclear power is the only way we will ever manage to meet our future energy needs in any sort of realistic manner here in the UK considering the ever-increasing demand.
