I agree with you that there is no need to send military resources to the area. That being said it’s all about posturing, a show needs to be put on. I do not believe anything will happen except for sabre rattling.

Putin is not a fanatic crazy man like Hitler. That doesn’t mean his actions aren’t warlike actions that can lead ultimately to WWIII if these leaders are not careful.

WWI didn’t have a fanatic Hitler type and was as bloody and destructive as WWII. So, one doesn’t always need a Hitler fanatic type for the world to sink into the savagery of a world war.

Putin, getting on up in years, may feel he hasn’t much time left and so disrespected and believe the idea that Russia was promised that NATO wouldn’t go beyond West Germany. That is debatable and it looks like technically Russia is wrong…read this www.newyorker.com...
On another level, the West is guilty of number one, hypocrisy, (for their destruction of many ME countries), and number two, not using the end of the cold war to enthusiastically END WAR OR THE THREAT OF A WWIII.

The reason why we all know is that the US is beholden to the arms industry that needs a Russian and China threat to do what Eisenhower warned us against The Military-Industrial Complex

On the other hand, Russia should cease threatening Ukraine with destruction. They should cease picking on this militarily inferior country

I say to those who don’t realize the ugliness, the foulness of war. Our young men many still teenagers being ripped apart and blown to bits for what?

The ego of certain leaders and the greed of arms merchants.

Must be true as watched it on YouTube, eh?

NATO's official position is that Russian intentions are unknown, and that Russia has amassed 100K troops on the Ukrainian border in a deliberately provocative posture, and thus is a real threat. Either way, Russian troops have been deployed into the east of Ukraine to support separatists in the past, so at what point does that become an "invasion"!

Hungary are merely reiterating diplomatic ties and Croatia has said it will remove any troops it has in Eastern Europe should the situation escalate. Hardly the "crumbing" of NATO as you are implying.

Only Russia knows what they will do next. Hopefully they'll seek friendly relations with Ukraine, rapidlt de-escalate the situation they have created, give back the land they have illegally annexed and apologise for the bad behaviour: Somehow I doubt they will do that. Russia seems incapable of being nice to some countries.

Pan-Slavism. Big Brother Moscow knows what is best, especially for other Slavic peoples.

Don't know if the Croatian government has ever had a "come to Jesus" meeting with Moscow regarding World War II. Kind of doubt that has happened.

Cheers

You're correct that arms sales are something the USA participates in, on a large scale.

But let us not kid ourselves. All those Kalishnikovs and RPG-7s all over the world didn't appear there as if by an act of magic.

Ditto French, German, British, Swedish (yes!, ever hear of "Bofors" ?), Chinese, etc. etc. weapons systems found all over the world.

Bottom line is that arms sales represent BIG money, and no country that manufactures arms will hold back from profiting on their sales.

Cheers

The U.S. has been very good for a very long time at not selling any weapons that would really tip the balance of power anywhere.

Our allies are frequently unhappy about this.

Still not nearly enough though.

Partly just because few could afford what we put into just about everything we build for our military.

But still a fact.

(With some obvious exceptions)

Statistics on the arms trade focus on value. Most arms consumed within, and exported by, the West are pretty expensive, hence why the value of the trade is highest in the US, Germany, UK, France and so on. However, the low-value arms produced and sold by Russia, China and other places are actually the things that do the killing.

It's probably a researched fact somewhere, but the AK47 has probably caused more grief and misery than any other weapon in record history, but the value of AK47 sales would be less than a couple of F22s!

Agreed.

I've actually seen such a study, but too long ago to recall the details.

We don't sell f22s to anyone, to avoid changing the balance of power anywhere.

Obama made sure we don't even produce any more for ourselves, for the exact same reason, this plane scares the he11 out of russia and ccp.

I don't disagree with this sentiment, i really dont.

But a lofty goal for mere mortal man to ask for no more war. Mankind will war, its our nature and without some kind of evolution, regrettably it always will be.

As far as Eisenhower is concerned, well he was right, but somewhat a hypocrite no? He warned us against the influence of the military industrial complex but didn't remove himself from it until he was on his way out. I would much have preferred that he fight against it actively instead of leaving us with a warning that we could do nothing about. Yet, he literally reaped all the benefits of it to ultimately get to where he was - POTUS. Now, one can argue he set himself up in that position as a shield, but do we know that?

Greed will always drive man...thus war will always drive man.

Ike was also nearly a century ago.

A few things have changes since then eh?

But still the same impossible challenge.

A handful of rogue countries don't WANT to keep their military inside their own borders.

Because they WANT to enslave their neighbors.

Damn near impossible to change those desires.

But we can make sure they understand what our response will be.

Which does not include sending U.S. troops to stand between them.

Well, having been a former lifer, there are 2 things that strike me as immediately evident.

For one, the DOD is gonna signal that troops are proxy in nature only and as support personnel. The second is that elite teams are already in there.

All just my opinion, of course.

So The US gave a response to Russia and ask them not to make it public --- Just what do they want kept secret ?

"The State Department has reportedly asked Russia not to make its response public. Speaking at the Russian parliament earlier on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the ministry would communicate the “essence of their reaction” to the Russian public."

My guess would be they dont want press and pundits speculating on it prematurely. They know it's going to come out anyway.

You know, I don’t disagree with you either about war being in man’s nature. Not every human though and mostly MEN do wars: testosterone is a b___h!

But the exhortation and attempt to persuade people against war is always useful, not always successful but one has to try.

And your right, in the end, we will likely( if we survive) evolve out of war. Something has to take its place: maybe sports, games, something humans are missing, and war fills that gap until that which is missing returns.

I didn't mean to imply that it's only the US. And you are absolutely right, all the nations save the poor ones are involved.

I spoke about the US mainly because they are in the middle of this present human fiasco. I could have surely mentioned Russia and all those others you mentioned.

Well, i would argue on only one point. It's not what humans are missing that war fills the gap on.... it's what humans have that should be removed - greed and the desire for power. If one could snap their fingers and remove it from every human alive (thanos style) what would be left to war about?

It's why i have little faith in religion too, if there was such a loving and forgiving God, why would he create us with such attributes THEN tell us "thou shalt not covet thy neighbors house, nor his manservant, nor his maid servant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbors"..... if you look objectively at every species on the planet there is greed and power struggle, which is what causes them to "war" either for food, territory or hierarchy, from humans and wolves, all the way down to ants. Humans are just ideally positioned to choose not to do so as we can reason beyond our instinct....and yet, we dont.

Now we're talking psychology, philosophy, and religion to a degree though religion people don’t realize is about psychology.

Freud would call it Thanatos, desire for death, the Hindus would call it Kali or the destructive part of their trinity. Buddha might call it to desire.

I call it a misconfiguration of something in our soul that creates excess desire, ego, and greed through the darkness that veils reality.

Basically, an imbalance where desire becomes greed and greed mixed with ego becomes war and violence.

Restore the original configuration of our inner being and presto, all will be forgiven, forgotten, and peace will reign supreme cause there will be nothing to back up war and violence.
