I think it matters because hundreds of thousands of people use these platforms to communicate. If they are controlled by TPTB and go down - hundreds of thousands of people cannot communicate and share information.
Yes, I remember the days before even the Internet existed. There was no news. No one ever heard about the assassination of JFK, or the Korean War, or anything like that. Heck, we didn't even know who the President was!

Born in 69. I missed the 60's, and would have enjoyed them. But there was such a feeling of "just have fun, and everything else will fall into place" back then, and somehow, it worked. Again, can't explain it, you had to be there.

It’s not just FB, it’s a ton of sites. I’m surprised ATS is still up.
This is only the beginning.
the best thing that could happen to everyone is for all social media to stop existing. next would be to make your phone only a phone. If you doubt me, ask someone who lived in the 80s.
I'd like to return to the days of the phones being connected via wires.
I lived in the 60's and 70's in addition to the 80's.

But the only way we knew the news was from the news .
And they were lying to us then too
My point is, there are other avenues of communication. We communicated just fine before Facebook.

The most interesting thing from this interview is not that FB censors. We all knew that. Their reasons for what they censor however seem horrible. A lot of people assumed its mainly a political slant they follow, but that appears wrong now. They amplify all negative content, and remove less than 5% because people love to hate, so they engage more hate to get you back. Now politicians and others are upset that the only way they can get clicks on FB, is to make their adds lean to one extreme or the other, because that gets engagement and gives them better ROI on their adds. It seems Facebook has setup a system where advertisers, groups, and anything else needs to take crazy or absurd extremists positions to get attention and clicks. Then those positions are adopted by different sides, and make them more extreme the next time around for the next click.

Facebook wants to control what we see, what we hear, what we say, and what we think.

What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, & WhatsApp?
Doug Madory is director of internet analysis at Kentik, a San Francisco-based network monitoring company. Madory said at approximately 11:39 a.m. ET today (15:39 UTC), someone at Facebook caused an update to be made to the company’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) records. BGP is a mechanism by which Internet service providers of the world share information about which providers are responsible for routing Internet traffic to which specific groups of Internet addresses.
In simpler terms, sometime this morning Facebook took away the map telling the world’s computers how to find its various online properties. As a result, when one types Facebook.com into a web browser, the browser has no idea where to find Facebook.com, and so returns an error page.
