I think it matters because hundreds of thousands of people use these platforms to communicate. If they are controlled by TPTB and go down - hundreds of thousands of people cannot communicate and share information.

Yes, I remember the days before even the Internet existed. There was no news. No one ever heard about the assassination of JFK, or the Korean War, or anything like that. Heck, we didn't even know who the President was!

TheRedneck

But the only way we knew the news was from the news .

And they were lying to us then too

My point is, there are other avenues of communication. We communicated just fine before Facebook. Remember the Civil Rights Movement? MLK Jr.? No Internet.

Besides, if the government wanted to listen in on your communications (and I am not saying they don't), Facebook would be the way to go! You might as well be broadcasting every blurb you post on the airwaves.

What's scary is you don't even realize that...

It’s not just FB, it’s a ton of sites. I’m surprised ATS is still up.

This is only the beginning.

the best thing that could happen to everyone is for all social media to stop existing. next would be to make your phone only a phone. If you doubt me, ask someone who lived in the 80s.

I'd like to return to the days of the phones being connected via wires.
I lived in the 60's and 70's in addition to the 80's.
Born in 69. I missed the 60's, and would have enjoyed them. But there was such a feeling of "just have fun, and everything else will fall into place" back then, and somehow, it worked. Again, can't explain it, you had to be there.

Ok, I'm going to zap out of nostalgia and back into reality.

We need to stop lying to ourselves about Facebook. Yes we communicated before, but never as efficiently as we have with FB. It took us into a new realm, a FREE real.
Let me give you an example.

Being a military brat when we would move overseas we either could write letters to our statesides friends, or we could call them at a cost of about $75 per call. I'm not even joking. So basically we lost touch with most of our friends. Facebook solved that. Facebook also gave cell phone companies a run for their money. Telecom is a scary beast. They would take your last cent if they could. Facebook stopped that in a way because they allowed people to communicate in a similar way to phone, but BETTER. There is no going back.

AND.........We can crank call people again.

Ring ring..........heavy breathing, ha ha ha, click!
And they will never know who did it!

AND........ they will laugh, or get annoyed and MOVE on with their life!
That is how it should be!!

LOL!!! I used to phreak back in the 80's going through a PBX and also hacking Sprint and MCI codes for years. We made all kinds of prank calls I even got live on TV on the Home Shopping Club and embarrassed the hell outta the host live one night and used to call the local tv channel all the time when they would take live Q and A calls at 5pm and say all kinds of nasty crazy stuff over the phone and another religious channel The 800 club on tv.Theres nothing funnier that acting like your asking a serious questions on live tv and just starting bombing someone who thinks its a legit call. Remember those guys called The Jerky Boys?

Also, my SiriusXm was changing channels all on its own. It has NEVER EVER EVER done that before.

THEY ARE #ING WITH US.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp go DOWN worldwide for three hours and counting in catastrophic outage after server issue causes them to 'disappear' from the internet

My XM seemed fine at noon central. I always use it so I'll check it out in an hour and a half when I head home.

Yeah, Facebook is wonderful for keeping in touch with people who move away. But it comes at what price? You mention the telcoms would take our last cent if we let them; that's true, but Facebook wants our last freedom. Facebook wants to control what we see, what we hear, what we say, and what we think.

Which is more important to you? Money or freedom? Or did you just answer that?

The most interesting thing from this interview is not that FB censors. We all knew that. Their reasons for what they censor however seem horrible. A lot of people assumed its mainly a political slant they follow, but that appears wrong now. They amplify all negative content, and remove less than 5% because people love to hate, so they engage more hate to get you back. Now politicians and others are upset that the only way they can get clicks on FB, is to make their adds lean to one extreme or the other, because that gets engagement and gives them better ROI on their adds. It seems Facebook has setup a system where advertisers, groups, and anything else needs to take crazy or absurd extremists positions to get attention and clicks. Then those positions are adopted by different sides, and make them more extreme the next time around for the next click.

Here we call that "stars and flags".

Only if we let them.

In my case, it controls only what I do on Facebook.

Wow, I'm glad someone posted this. Otherwise I would have never known why the world was exploding.

I did check... down for me. Who cares?

Mostly nobody, that's the beauty of it! I was just texting my mom, since messenger is down, and we were talking about how great things were before the internet and how nice it would be if the internet went away completely. We can go ahead and go back to all incandescent lighting on cars for that matter.

Facebook is being crushed. This has to be unprecedented or they are just running on crappy infrastructure. I hope they are down for days. Facebook is evil, we all knew it and now there is proof positive with the whistle blower dump.

My buddies dad had a business phone at his house. It had multiple lines. We used to call two competing businesses, and have them answer at the same time. It was so funny listening in. They both thought the other one called. They had some funny conversations. Sometimes we call the same business, and people sitting next to each other would answer. 60s, those were the days!

For whatever it's worth.....if anything at all. Sent to me by a cyber security engineer.

What Happened to Facebook, Instagram, & WhatsApp?

Doug Madory is director of internet analysis at Kentik, a San Francisco-based network monitoring company. Madory said at approximately 11:39 a.m. ET today (15:39 UTC), someone at Facebook caused an update to be made to the company’s Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) records. BGP is a mechanism by which Internet service providers of the world share information about which providers are responsible for routing Internet traffic to which specific groups of Internet addresses.

In simpler terms, sometime this morning Facebook took away the map telling the world’s computers how to find its various online properties. As a result, when one types Facebook.com into a web browser, the browser has no idea where to find Facebook.com, and so returns an error page.

If this is true, than it was most likely an inside job coordinated with the interview last night. And they would not have just changed settings, they most likely would have deleted the registry entries and server roles that held the settings themselves. Could have even been a logic bomb of some type, or something a previous employee placed before leaving that encrypted some hard drives, or just started deleting.

None of these things are even close to far fetched when you are dealing with the types of people companies like Facebook seek out to hire and pay lots of money to. I'll drink a beer to the Facebook insiders.

As reported first at 10am there was a Whistle Blower.
Then they said an employee did some "update" thus causing this huge issue.

Oddly enough, my sister is able to Get WSOP world series of poker through FB to Retain data of numbers.
However she still can't use anything FB otherwise. FB is how she logs in.

But we're to busy today with our kids.... Murphy and Benni. 👍🙂
