Do you want to get married?

Not necessarily.

But like my brothers I want to wear a silver ring.

Everybody is getting divorced, but I want the "silver" ring-thing.

But you have to get married, otherwise you can't wear it.

There is only one reason to ever get married. And that is to have babies.

Interesting.
I'm married. We don't have any children together.
Been together for over 20 years.

How about love?

I don't want to get married.

I just want to wear a silver ring.

It's so stylish.

No brother it signifies - you have to get married.

Silver tarnishes. White gold doesn't.
I've heard that there are coatings or electroplating that stops tarnish from silver.
Shop wisely.

I used to wear a silver pinky finger ring. My finger turned green.

Then it wasn't silver. I have a sterling silver cuff bracelet. I never take it off. (10 years and counting) No green here. Green is usually a result of copper so your silver plated jewellery may have gotten thin on silver plate.

I saw these brothers in the showers, struggling to get their rings off.

I want one too.

Or is that "stolen valor"?

Marriage is a statement of commitment.

You can be committed to a number of things.

You can be committed for a number of things as well!

Silver costs a lot less than gold but real silver also has a hallmark just like gold, as does my cuff bracelet. You can also see it reflected in the price. I paid 180 bucks for my bracelet (essentially one ounce of silver, raw cost 30-35 bucks) but it was made by a craftsman with sterling (92.5% pure) silver. I never clean it, cleaning silver with chemicals takes a layer off. Silver plate is only a few microns thick so cleaning it eventually removes all silver. Hope it helps.

"Hans Rutter, a young German ... the men were actually part of a VOC press gang.

He was consequently informed that he was now a soldier in the VOC's army stationed at the tip of Africa.

Cured of ever immersing himself in the dubious pleasures of drink again, Rutter eschewed the taverns of the Cape, and devoted his leisure to looking after a pet baboon."

(June McKinnon: Wine Women and Song: A history of scandalous behavior in the Cape. Page 53, 2015.)

It gets worse however. The baboon climbed up the clock-tower and rang the bell.
Apparently after much provocation.
For this the baboon was sentenced to 50 lashes, which was commuted to his owner.
Eventually Rutter settled at Attaquakloof (page 53).

I saw these brothers in the showers, struggling to get their rings off.

I had a fiancé once. She and I had matching wedding bands that we got at a pawn shop. We wore them even though we were not married.

There were rumors about what she was up to when I wasn't around.
I scoffed, "But we have our rings on!"
Then someone told me "She can just take it off."

Now my ex-fiancé has both rings, 'cause I took mine off. She's probably sold them by now. That was a long time ago.

Or is that "stolen valor"?

I don't see the point in putting a ring on, just to take it off.

My silver ring was not plated. Let's say the hallmark was somewhat less than .925, closer to .433. More copper than silver.

Can I get another ear piercing?

No you are state property.

And while they have you eating dust with a boot on your head - you will not damage state property.

Until you're 55.

But wait a minute, isn't that largely white male slavery?

Yeah it is, but nobody cares.

I don't know what traditions are like in your area, but I have a few silver rings. Not the plain band type. My favorite is the one with the the emerald. It's my Green Lantern ring.

What I'd really like to do is get an ounce of rhodium and have a ring made from that. Maybe with a one carat green diamond. Amethyst also looks good on silver rings.

I think I may like jewelry a bit too much for a straight guy.

I am wearing a ring that I made out of a 1946 silver half dollar, been wearing it for 3 years now and no black or green on my finger.
