As I've said before though, if they really wanted to screw over people with guns they'd just regulate the crap out of ammunition and make it basically impossible to sell or produce. That's what they're doing to abortion in Texas.

That is a non-negotiable with me.

Stick a fork in Bernie.

ETA: Funny how these are the same people that advise us NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.

Whoa wait a second. These are 2 completely different situations. Bernie is his own man and he speaks for himself on this. Just because I support many of his positions (and voted for him in early voting) doesn't mean I have to agree with him on everything. He's not a prophet or some cult leader & I think it's dumb for anyone to blindly follow anyone, especially a career politician.

Besides, most of my family, friends, and neighbors are gun owners & we use them almost exclusively for self protection (particularly home protection). So Bernie's words on this aren't something any of us would accept. However, that doesn't change the fact that I still think we should strengthen the social safety net, drastically increase the federal minimum wage, etc. And I still support Bernie far more than every other candidate (except maybe whoever the Green Party nominates).

Unfortunately ammo is pretty cheap and easy to make compared to guns.

That's what they're doing to illegal drugs in America

I'd respond more eloquently, but that would likely breach forum etiquette, so I kindly request you stop lying. Sanders is not a Marxist.

Fair point. But that is how they make guns useless without bothering with the constitution. Banning ammunition wouldn't work any better than banning the actual guns, but the constitutionality wouldn't get in the way of it.

Trying to make all guns illegal wouldn't actually get too many guns off the street, it would just make a lot of people criminals as they would choose to surreptitiously keep their firearms. Ammo ban would do the same thing, make a lot of people criminals for no real reason.

Also, the Second Amendment already has some compromises. Citizens aren't allowed to own rocket launchers, as far as I know.

We got rattlers but not gators. Of course we have hand guns for protection but not hunt.

well, it would take much violence off of both sides of the street... public and public servant... no excuse for cops to be gunning anyone down unless they are game enough to stand the charges for it. its more a quailing of civil unrest than an out right ban... why do people claim they needs guns anyway? self protection? thats what the cops are paid to do, feet, quick wit, and or martial arts can do. if resigned to hunting and home protection? then thats right where they belong, and we can start reclaiming our streets from the failed drug war experiement.

so smart practical bipartisan policy? indeed.

reactionary response not needed once the effects of such become clear...

How is recognizing the huge problem of gun violence a "fantasy world?"

It's you gun worshippers that live in fantasy.

Until guns are properly controlled equality will still be an issue... carrying anything looking like a weapon gets you gunned down in the streets this isn't the 1880s this is twenty sixteen... we should be trekking the stars by now. But, no ignorance and fear are the two chains binding all hands and potential.

Quick wit and martial arts aren't going to save you in 80 percent of gunfight situations. Most of the time you aren't close enough to close that gap or be able to move in proximity

Real life isn't "Borne Identity"

And I say this as a man with years of kravmaga and Bjj training, and also as a Marine

Some of you live in a fantasy land when it comes to self defense

And no. It's not the polices job to protect you and your family, it's YOUR job. They are just first responders and more often than not, show up after the crime has been committed

Your post wreaks of inexperience or ignorance or both.

The saddest part of this is thanks to spin, like the thread title, people are ignoring what he said in favor of what they think he means.

"Guns used for killing people, exclusively..."

Y'know, like a belt fed machine gun? Something that's fully automatic? I can't lay claim to having hunted animals all that much, but I don't recall ever thinking "God I wish I could shoot this deer 31 times in less than three seconds. That would make this way better."

Now, one could reasonably argue he (sanders) might include any assault type rifle in his statement, but I think that's up to him to clarify and not others to ASSUME, isn't it?

Nah. Way more fun to tweak his statement juuuuust a little bit and then scream about it.

Hey.. umm what stops someone from blowing off another persons head with a double barrel 12 gauge then?

Did you know that more people are killed by handguns than "assault type rifles", by a large margin?

"Guns used for killing people, exclusively..." is spin, in and of itself.

Funny, because I view this as a violence issue.

I live in the town where the guy went into a deli and hacked people up with a machete a couple weeks ago. Had he had a gun, he would have been the same violent idiot.

Some people are violent, they have always been violent, and always will be violent.

History has shown us that time, and time again.

Well, white people do.

You guys definitely have a police brutality/police in general problem though. You'd have to be insane to deny that that is the case.

Guns make people more violent, though. I'm not saying this to disparage your point, since I am technically anti-gun control as far as the US is concerned, but someone carrying a gun is more likely to respond with violence than someone who is not. The most important thing is ultimately education, but I simply do not understand why you allow criminals convicted of violent crime to obtain firearms. At the very least, that is obviously a bad idea.

Just this summer there was a whole group of black panthers openly carrying weapons rifles and handguns and protesting in Texas

No one was shot in the streets

Please take the racial bs somewhere else

Not sure if you're aware of the 1986 ban on machine guns, but basically it's made them so valuable that only collectors have them and you'd have to be dumb to use them in a crime anyway. They're simply not very useful outside of heavy military engagement.

And as ever, if someone is planning a CRIME, they probably don't really care about tacking on a few extra charges such as using an illegal weapon.
