Are you sure about that Pocket?
I just clicked on the link I posted here last night and it is still the same i.e. it hasn't rolled on to today.
link from page 83
Can anyone else see that, or I wonder if it is just me and the fact I'm logged in to it.
I installed the App on my phone and it should be synced, but its not.
I'll have a look at that Scrapbook.

I got that Dropbox message too, and thought *^%$#@@#$%^&* b_stards
I can't find any detail on the help link they provided as to what exactly will be still viewable by the public.
This could mean my work web site will lose all it's photos as well!, now that will be a big problem if this effects all Dropbox saves.
As I said *^%$#@@#$%^&* b_stards, they recently sent me a renewal for Dropbox Pro, which I paid $99 for another year.
That is FRAUD
most of my links start with dl.dropboxusercontent.com... I take it the "u/xxnumberxx" part is the "public" part of the file address as it is on those links.
some start with files.getdropbox.com...
I recently changed a lot of links to dl.dropbox.com... which overrode the security settings and allowed the files to be shown on Bing Maps, but then Bing maps decided not to provide KML/KMZ links at all.

What the heck is going on?, it seems ALL these service providers are discontinuing some very helpful internet services
Years and years of work down the drain, Google , Bing, now Dropbox, millions of users will be effected.
If this is true, then I might as well give up the mapping now.

You know if you need storage of 30GB or so it would possibly be cheaper to host those files yourself on a VPS server

www.1and1.com... for example is $4.95 a month for 1 vCore Intel® Xeon®Processors, 512 MB ram, 30 GB SSD, Unlimited traffic.

At least that way you know it is not going to be changed. AT that price you could even just host the whole thing on the VPS using Wordpress.org or similar.

I am definitely considering moving QVSData onto one of those.

If you went to the hosting solution that one is particularly good with unlimited webspace!!!

Thanks for the reply crappiekat, yes the same as on my phone, looks like the only reason I can see the saved page is because I'm logged in to Pocket on my laptop. I guess the App is only 1/2 useful then, I could always bring the old page up here and screenshot it.
I was hoping that it would be handy to save a page where a earthquake link was shown that later got changed or deleted.
Don't worry about the dropbox links, that was just to show in text format the various addresses I have been using, the links were not real ones.

edit: well no it doesn't quite (rolls eyes)
I just went and had another look. What it did was save the page in Pocket, which I shifted to Archives.
When I open Archives it shows the page as I saved it (timed at 2016/12/15 08:00UTC)
but if I click on an individual plot image it opens as if it was live (2016/12/15 18:00UTC)
so it is only 1/4 useful

In summary it saves the page, but not the links in it.

Yes that looks like an option.
I had a look at my account , I only am using 2GB of 1 Terrabite available, probably I went overboard.
The reason I went Pro was because the free Dropbox got full a couple of years ago.
Its the work web site that bothers me, its not the end of the world, but damn that is going to be a lot of work to re-write, I have thousands of pictures on both the Wordpress and the .com versions stored on Dropbox.
Why couldn't they wait 3 more years until when I retire, then it wouldn't matter.
I just renewed Dropbox last week.

If you host your own wordpress.org site you simple export the .com and import it. I have just done that for our choir site and it works fine.

Sorry if this is a bit OT but it is important!

I don't host the Wordpress site, but did pay for a custom template a while back, (which I also just renewed recently)
The muzzyroofing.com site (not the real name) is hosted here in NZ, but the html code is so old and confused I don't edit it any more, its still there because it has been there so long that it still comes up quite high on the search engines ( moreso on image search ironically). I started using Wordpress 2 years ago with a link on the old site to the WP one on the front page.
Oh well if the crash is coming, it is 9 months away, time to make alternative arrangements.

On a lighter note.
I was having a look at bmkg which is the Indonesian web site for earthquakes.
From time to time it has had viruses in it and I have avoided it.
Seems OK at the moment.

I had a chuckle at their Earthquake Antisipation page, the cartoons are good.
www.bmkg.go.id...
The last one I just HAD to translate when I seen the cartoon

G. Jangan panik dan jangan lupa selalu berdo'a kepada Tuhan YME demi keamanan dan keselamatan kita semuanya.
Translation
G. Do not panic and do not forget to always pray to Almighty God for the sake of the security and safety of all of us.

Amen, whatever religion you may (or may not) be.

Another translation

E. equipment that must be in every place
P3K box;
Flashlight / battery;
Radio;
Food supplements and water

P3K must be a First Aid Box
Immediately fter the Marlborough M7.8 recently we found that;
The batteries in the home portable radio were dead. I had to go to my truck and turn the radio on there to hear what was going on regarding the tsunami risk. And I used the light from my cell phone screen to find the flashlight, which had been moved from its designated spot.

I was on the verge of cancelling my subscription with Dropbox, as the payment hasn't gone through yet.
Thinking I had one day to transfer the entire 2GB of files off Dropbox to my hard drive for safe keeping until I find an alternative
But I had a read of the 14 pages of complaints about this on the Dropbox Forum topic Ending support of public folder

It appears if your files (KMZ/KML, jpg, png, gif image files etc) start with dl.dropboxusercontent.com... then you will still be OK after Sept 9th.
Anything older than 2012 may not work. That is when they changed the layout. I seem to remember having trouble back then with some of my links.

There are a lot of unhappy Dropbox customers out there, everyone feels cheated and ripped off.
probably more than were the Google Maps disgruntled users in Feb 2015, at least that was free.
I expect Dropbox will lose hundreds of thousands of subscribers and will sell off to some other outfit. Maybe that is the plan, to sell Dropbox off for some outrageous amount of money.
This is the problem with using the "Cloud" to store your stuff.

I might just go get all my files anyway. I have them all on hard drive but they are scattered everywhere on there.

I mentioned earthquake activity near Inchbonnie on the south end of the Hope Fault before, it may have been the precursor to the Marlborough 7.8 at the other end of the Fault, several weeks before there was a swarm of quakes there. Also the odd one very day since the 7.8, but there is a big gap geographically between the two.

Noted yesterday there was a M4.0 there on the 16th NZDT and thought oh-oh here we go.
I never got around to posting the map for the 16th, just as well, it got downgraded by quite a lot, down 1.1 magnitudes to 2.9

Public ID 2016p946312
Intensity light
Universal Time December 16 2016, 3:15:28
NZ Daylight Time Fri, Dec 16 2016, 4:15:28 pm
Depth 2 km
Magnitude 2.9
Location 35 km north-east of Arthur's Pass
Latitude, Longitude -42.67, 171.74
www.geonet.org.nz...

note the quake history at the bottom of the page on the link
it started as a 2.9, then went up to 4.0, then back down again on review

shallow

I have made the Google Earth gadget on NZ Earthquakes full page width (750pixels), you can't see it on your phones anyway, and it can be hard to navigate in a small frame. This will take effect from the 15th Dec. I won't bother with rewriting previous posts, the whole thing could crash and burn at anytime, its just not worth the effort (the Dropbox issue)
