No, no, no.

They are there to disable HAARP!
They know that it is still operational and that is why they have all those typhoons headed their way!

My God why does every damned thread on ATS have to turn into amateur comedy hour?

Seriously, it's no wonder people repeat info and ask the same questions 50 times when there's always page after page of people popping off with the first joke that comes to mind.

Where's the useful contribution people? It's pretty interesting to me that our President is currently in the same region that these warships are located, even more so to learn about the types of ships deployed...

We're here trying to find and provide information to support this thread and you guys are busy cracking half-witted jokes, clogging up the thread for stars. Nothing new under the sun I guess, but damn if it's not getting annoying.

Get it together people.

(Maybe I'll make a Rant thread about it... but this one in particular made me say "now just a minute.")

You know the egg roll has really gone down hill. The decline of the egg roll. When I was a kid, they were big and totally stuffed with really nicely chopped vegetables, shrimp...nice. Now? Pitiful. China is kind a like the egg roll.

My guess, and that's all it is...

Keep that in mind.

China is testing reaction from Russia. Why? Siberia.

Yeah, I know, it sounds like a Tom Clancy novel...

But, Siberia is a wonderchest of mineral treasures. Oil, almost certainly. Strategic minerals, and rare earths, again, almost certainly. If they think they can begin to encroach, even invade? They'll certainly contemplate doing it.

Putin needs to rethink his attitude towards the West, just as the west does towards Russia. For the very reason that there is an expansionist nation just to their south that is militarily, at least, on a par or better, with Russia.

They certainly aren't testing the U.S. or Canada. They know they can't do anything there. It's Russia.

With such little info out there the thread has just turned into a speculation thread..

I wonder if these ships have a connection somehow with those three explosions?

Not sure why you would expect otherwise?

China has long had its eyes on Siberia, and with internal discontent growing in various areas of that nation? What better way to slow that down than to look outward. ...and the only place to go, along with SE Asian waters where India, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S., along with Australia are casting a gimlet eye, is Siberia.

I dont expect otherwise. Since we dont know for sure why they are there we should speculate ..

Okey-dokey.

These are by far my fave sort of threads. I get to play like I actually know what I'm talking about.

I'm a child of the Cold War. ...my father, while he was in college majored in Oriental studies, and oddly, Russian literature...

It's a strange combination, I respect the hell out of Chinese culture prior to the Revolution, but I'm at a complete loss to explain their thinking since...

It's obvious, to me at any rate, that they're up to something. Five Peoples Army Navy don't just go for a cruise in those particular waters...

What the method to the madness is??? No idea. A test is the best I can come up with.

While the conditions for something similar do exist in some form, this is definitely not leading to the premise of "The Bear and the Dragon". Very different set of circumstances currently.
China and Russia have a few mutual and robust energy and trade agreements worth billions. Besides the fact they both view the West as intruders, the Siberian tundra is safe for at least another decade from a P.L.A. invasion.

This is probably just for show under the guise of a "routine maritime exercise" or some nonsense meant to cover the ruse. Which is all this is, as 5 Chinese warships couldn't hope to do too much by themselves so close to the U.S. mainland. I'm sure U.S.PACOM has been well aware of their approach.
These are normal behaviors of powerful nations. High Seas saber rattling, nothing more.

I'm inclined to agree with all you've said above; not that I know any better, but it just seems like extra noisy rattling considering the President's concurrent Alaska visit. That, and the fact that this maneuver is admittedly unprecedented.

They were having joint naval exercises with Russia in the area, but them moving closer to Alaska when they were done is unexplainable. Maybe they want to defect once they saw how run down Russia's navy is.

I am going to go with the perception that the Chinese Navy is attempting to appear as a Blue water navy as opposed to a Brown water navy.

China's main issues with dealing with the US / Taiwan / nations in the Pacific is Chinese lack of force projection. Its one of the main reasons mainland China could not invade / secure Taiwan once WWII was over. A year or so back they floated the idea with Taiwan of building an underwater tunnel linking China and Taiwan. China would pay for the entire thing and tried to sell it as an economic link.

Taiwan refused for the very obvious reason is it could easily be used by the Chinese military as an invasion route.

Right now the only thing stopping China from expanding / forcibly confronting their neighbors in the Pacific is their inability to project force. I would watch to see how their naval training progresses especially with their aircraft carried and another one under construction. There is no point in building a navy or having an aircraft carrier if you cant use it as its intended.

Oh, you're probably right.

But a decade really isn't very long when the rulers of a country like China have been in power, or positions of power, since before many of us were born.

I'd forgotten about the joint naval exercises. Thx. That does shed a bit more light on it, or maybe more shadows...

I really hope I'm wrong...because China casting covetous eyes upon Siberia would make for troubling times.

Bad enough the Cold War is making a dramatic return, don't really want to see WWIII make it's debut...

When it comes to Siberia / E. Russia China is doing what the Russians did in Ukraine. They have their citizens living in those areas and when the time is right will deploy the military to "protect" their citizens. China already has screwed Russia over on its oil deal, essentially backing out of part of the pipeline.

I would say they are there to protect communism. With our pos potus being the new Grand Wizard Commie they are probably protecting him. How in the hell this guy got elected twice by destroying us, dividing us, and wiping his bum with the constitution is unfathomable.
And a bit of an epiphany I recently had,, is that socialism or communism is just capitolism in the hands of the government. Big government running crazy putting us all in the poor house. Yay China, yay Husein, we are screwed.
