ive Chinese navy ships are currently operating in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska, the first time the U.S. military has seen such activity in the area, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

The officials said they have been aware in recent days that three Chinese combat ships, a replenishment vessel and an amphibious ship were in the vicinity after observing them moving toward the Aleutian Islands, which are split between U.S. and Russian control.

They said the Chinese ships were still in the area, but declined to specify when the vessels were first spotted or how far they were from the coast of Alaska, where President Barack Obama is winding up a three-day visit.

It may be because China has a lot of interest in the Arcitc as other Countries do as well, however their research in the area is more than any other country. They have been researching it since at least 1999.

Here is a link about the Council over the Arctic. This includes all the key players. Even Russia... just not the EU yet. digitalcommons.lmu.edu...

China which isn’t even an Arctic country, will have built two icebreakers by next year. The U.S. Coast Guard, however, has two functioning icebreakers (the same as tiny Estonia), and one of these vessels is already a decade past its intended 30-year life span.

The Russians and Chinese have just had a war game type thing in that region. Read about it the other day. Let's face it though, after the USA's declaration of a "pivot" to the east maybe the East (now it is strong/wealthy enough) will decide on a pivot towards the USA

china has attempted to lay claims to parts of the Arctic and those claims have been rejected by all bordering countries considering China does not have a coast line with the Arctic Ocean.

It was nothing more than an attempt at a resource grab.. Just like they are trying to do in the S. China sea.

5 Ships is not force protection, something the Chinese fail to understand.

They already pivoted towards their East which is why the US pivoted West.
