The country is only really just kicking off their campaign to impose porn filters that not only often don't work, but also have so far managed to accidentally block numerous entirely legal and useful websites including technology news sites like Slashdot, digital rights groups like the EFF, rape counseling websites, and more. David Cameron's government has long-stated they want this filtering to eventually extend to websites deemed "extremist" by the government, and it appears that new proposals being drafted hope to make that a reality sooner rather than later.

With Porn Filters Going Oh So Well, UK Roars Ahead In Expanding Them To Include 'Extremist' Content

From the beginning of the initial plan this has been a concern. As mentioned that legal sites are being effected. What else can that include in the scope of things? Sites like this in general?

Well I thought that UK was a free country, I mean freedom of expression, whatever is the agenda behind the porn issue is was bound to be just an experiment, to see how much the powers could be extended.

Just like we have here in the US.

This is kind of scary, if they have found a way to block what ever they(who ever they are) want then anyone who does not agree with the controlling agenda will be blocked.

In America that would be the progressive liberal agenda.

Maybe conspiracy sites are next.

UK meet China. China meet UK.

You folks are in a deeper mess than we are in the US. Better get rid of that lunatic Cameron soon.

Find yourself a good proxy program. I think it should allow you to bypass restrictions or hide your ip address. They're pretty easy to find online and most are for free. In fact I'm using one right now.

At first they came for the porn addicts. I said nothing, because I do not look at porn.

Then they came for the extremists I said nothing because my views are centered.

When they come for you, hopefully there will be someone left to speak on your behalf.

Question is, despite the Government actions, how is it being implemented/affected?

Could one simply use a non-standard (private) DNS server?
Perhaps tunnel to a Proxy in France? Belgium? some other country?

So long as you have a pipe of bandwidth to www, you can VPN, proxy, and even Terminal Server near anywhere so long as those protocols aren't blocked.
Once hooked into a more liberal "free" connection web, Pr0n away, or search at leisure without any blockage.

Speed might take a hit over using these methods to counter censorship, but, one could very well use these methodologies to Blog about the overwhelming expense taken up with the measures compared to its demonstrable ineffectiveness.
Through the Blog, in writing about the ineffectiveness and demonstrating how ineffective the measures are, plus obtaining any publicly available documents related to the budget and cost of maintaining the restrictions, a sufficiently motivated and proficiently observant person could gain support enough to get the whole program sacked.

David Cameron just needs someone to hook him up to their car exhaust, it would really improve his take on liberty.. This business of revoking any speech against politicians is expanding into who knows what.
I think everyone can see it is only going to get more and more insane..
Cameron needs a brain transplant with a bowl of cold oatmeal. This would help. I guess it is a good thing I'm not in England though.

When the United states had honorable people in government who appreciated freedom, they would have been all over David Cameron like fire ants, and he would have been tossed out into the English Channel for supporting the illegality of speech against politicians, let alone the things they will be adding on to this.. But American media is silent now that we have a Marxist overflowing outhouse for leadership.

This reminds me of all those bitchy, insufferable women that spend all day berating their husbands, and when they find porn they lose their marbles, go off in a fiery explosion of rage… Blaming it for all their marital woes, not realizing it's them actually, the reason the husband hates them.

He doesn't not love you because he found boobs online. He just hates you because you're annoying. And even worse you tried to take his porn away…

fact is the president of America goes to see his people within days of a major disaster, even the day or day after it happened.

david cameron?britain has taken a battering for weeks with storms, people losing their homes.half of britain under water and he gets off his lazy ass just in last week to go and see for himself what is actually going on.

why did he do that?cause he actually cared? NO cause of media pressure and no other reason, leader of the country?what a joke.

Many times while using free wi-fi at the local library half the ATS forums are blocked because of improper use of filters including ones on Religion, Secret Societies, New World Order, Weaponry etc. I imagine it will be like that across the whole internet if the government gets its way with this kind of thing.

But it's just filtering out terrorist websites and beheading videos... I'm just kidding. Internet censorship is sketchy.

Family guy did a skit about that with a caveman couple, wife finds "dirty" paintings on rocks, berates husband, packs backs and walks out saying "screw you", and husband replies "If you did that more often, maybe I wouldn't need these paintings". Brilliant comedy, but partly because I think there's some truth in it. Terrible photography of the skit on TV here, but that's probably why it hasn't been removed:

About expanding the porn filters to other things, who didn't see that one coming? It's not the great firewall of China yet, but moving in that direction is bad.

Hey Arb, you always find a Family Guy clip to put my words into video. Either MacFarlane and I have similar thought patterns, or you watch too much FG!

Picture the disgruntled-irrational wife. If the government starts censoring for the wrong reasons, it's going to be a mirrored image. Which is a little scary.

While they think they can keep plugging leaks in the dam with their fingers, they are going to open up new wholes with each attempt.

Whilst I am all for freedom of speech etc etc, I do think this story is a storm in a teacup.

First of all, the "porn filter" is only applied to new customers on signup at the moment and when it does roll out to existing customers, it can simply be opted out of. All it involves is an automatic block on adult content, you call the ISP to have it removed and bosh, you're done - back to running out of kleenex.

The same thing has been on mobile phones for years and no one has said a thing about them. Again, all you have to do is contact the provider and the restriction is lifted. It's just so that the adults in the house assume responsibility for content, rather than what we have at the moment which is parents blaming the ISP's, the Government, Jeebus, or the Man on the Moon for what their kids can find on the net.

Obama has had few disasters and still took several days to get to New York after Irene. Bush didn't even bother with Katrina!

I think you need perspective. Only 5,000 homes across the whole country have been affected, compared to the 50,000 homes flooded in 2007 - half the country isn't underwater either. Personally, I would rather the PM and the rest of them got on with the job, which they did, rather than go out for tacky photo-op's wading through the water.

As for your assertion he'll be out in the next election - I look forward to your naked leap off Elizabeth Tower by the way - the current polls, as they stand have the Tories still in Government and as the economy continues to improve, so will their polling.
