I read today that Scientist believe the fuel in reactor 3 has melted down into the groundwater..

Steam is the biggest issue with melted cores. If they are in the ground, they are most likely not far in the ground. Doom porn says that the cores will reach ground water and generate steam, which in turn would create pressure because the steam has no place to go.... then you would have a steam explosion.

I will just assume that it is nothing but doom porn because no one knows for sure where the cores are. I suspect that they are either still at the bottom of the reactors or close to it. If they have breached containment then they probably haven't traveled very far.

They definitely are not doing a China Syndrome, I don't think very many scientists even think that is possible anymore. Remember that is an old movie and understanding has changed since then.

How far away do you live from one of these "safe" "infallible" nuclear power plants? I'm just curious. Three Mile Island is just down the road and I can see the steam from plants in Limerick and one other one and I live an hour and a half away from them. The county governments hand out free potassium iodide. My kids' school and preschools have fallout/meltdown drills.

NOTHING is 100% safe. If it was made by man, it can break and cause massive devastation. I'm not going to say it is the end of the world, but there are alternative energy sources that if invested in on small scale co-op fashion could replace these waste factories. And the cost would be less.

Its like that joke, about telling someone their parent has died, by telling them events that lead up to their parent dying, a day at a time, but first you start with the dog.

First day, your dog is sick they had to take him to the vet.
Second day, the vet is doing everything he can
Third day, it doesn't look good
Fourth day, I am sorry but you dog died.

Oh, that is terrible, how is mom taking it.
Oh, your mother is sick, they had to take her to the hospital.

The news trickling our of Fukushima just keeps getting worse.

Some people will claim that there hasn't been any melt down and that the cores were successfully shut down before that happened.

I think it's much more likely that the fuel rods over heated and melted into big lumps of molten nuclear fuel known as a corium. No I can't prove that just the same as no one can prove they didn't melt down.

They are being so irresponsible and jacking up our oceans with this radioactive cesium 137 among other particles. They need to stop using this energy until they can provide it safely without harming the globe when there is a simple malfunction. Now we all need to test our local environment and drinking water supplies to make sure we're not being poisoned by this crap! Radiation Spill and Toxic Water Treatment

that's fantastic. the best possible news you could want to hear. looks like they have the situation well under control, and i guess we can close the book on this minor incident ! good job japan.

it is much worse than 3 mile island or Chernobyl and those raised the ambient radiation of the whole planet....cancer rates raised considerably after those and the nuke testing that was done by Russia and the USA.

Have you not read that the Pacific ocean is basically dying?

Ive read lots and lots on the subject. That does not mean its 100% accurate.

There is truth to what you say.
How much of the truth about the situation being released though is a question to be answered.

I hear ya....but we can use common sense here too can't we. If something produces waste that can't be disposed of and we know the waste is extremely hazardous to human health and the environment ..... then shouldn't we tread ever so lightly? or not tread at all?

The coal plants you pushed in your first post have this same problem. So called "clean coal" plants simply manage to gather up some portion of the waste, including radioactive material (seriously, you can even use it as nuclear reactor fuel) before it's released into the atmosphere. Then it's put into concrete bins and buried. As is typical with radioactive material, those enclosures then leak over time, putting concentrated pockets of radioactive waste into the soil.

Potassium Iodide is totally worthless. It's given out to give people peace of mind. The medication has serious enough long term side effects that you do not want to be taking it unless there's an actual need. It's a preventative measure only, and furthermore is ONLY good against Iodine 131 particles. Many other much more serious particles are also released in the event of a radiation leak from a plant.

I don't know where you get explosion from but this is tremendously bad if true. Think of the water table as an underground lake. If the nuclear fuel has melted into the ground there it is now irradiating that underground lake, and permeating through out it.

This is a fairly #ty way for that radiation to spread itself around. It's effects will not be immediate but if left unchecked it could produce serious long term damage over a very wide area. It could and will get into literally everything, all the fresh water, all the crops, drinking water, rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and the further it goes the more impossible it becomes to clean up.

Now as for why it's bad if the nuclear fuel has melted into the ground, they literally now how to dig up that nuclear fuel. Very time consuming, a whole heck of a lot larger clean up area, and more exposure to workers and the environment. All that material now has to be taken and stored some where safe basically. Dirt, mud, clay, water until it's "safe" to be placed elsewhere. The further the material goes the more you have to clean up, the longer it sits the more it spreads. We mentioned ground water, that is now an avenue to spread nuclear fuel.

If this is true the mess is becoming much worse. Not so much on a global scale but for japan. Fukushima will have world wide effects but not what people are afraid of. The people of Japan how ever could very well end up in some serious danger.

When you look for the File today you see that this bad Pic is gone

The figure in this document has been replaced to address some inquiries we received. The original picture, taken from public source, was merely meant to illustrate how the groundwater flows from the mountain side under the crippled power plant and into the ocean. The depth of the core was not in scale. Although it was not our intention, we acknowledge and regret that it caused some misunderstanding. - January 21, 2014

Fukushima is a problem that humanity will have to deal with for next million years or so. The Corium would be burning right now if it was not submerged in water. It is unfortunate that this problem is beyond humanities ability to solve at this time.

Confirming that yes unit 1,2 & 3 all have breached the bottom of their containment and have entered the underground water flow which is carrying the radiation into the Pacific ocean.
Current flow has brought debris and radiation to Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California shores and have been detected as radiation reading have rose substantially.
It is turning into OUR mess now.

There is no "Confirmation" of a Melt-Out in F'Shima Daiichi!

It is highly doubtful that the Final Containment Vessel is breached!

15 odd miles. So pretty near.

I dont see the issue. The modern reactors are bulit with multiple redundant systems so that if even more fails you have a dozen odd more that can kick in. The chance of all failing is astronomical. You would need a major earthquake to cause a catarophic failure. And in the UK we dont have major earthquakes.

We may not see fuku effects right away, but theres no doubt it will affect the whole planet, all oceans are connected. Our grandsons, and prolly even their sons, will still suffer the consequences of this disaster, as they said before this is strike 3.
Im losing hope really, the reason why japans goverment isnt trying hard to get the situation under control may be because they have no idea how to do so. All they can do is hide things under the rug for as long as they can.
Just a thought. these nuclear plants would work as excellent targets. They are double edged words. In a war scenario, if they were to bomb nuclear plants, youd be unleashing hell. So nuclear plants make a country much more vulnerable in the case of war.

There are several ways to stop it.

Reverse Sine! That is telsa type technology, the microwave, haarp, tesla coil, ham radio, rebar type technology, the reverse HZ!

They recently admitted with a science discovery that reverse microwaves can chill wine. Well Haarp has good uses not just bad, its doing the wrong things, causing depopulation and pain, instead of doing good. Reverse/hz/sine: chill the cores and boron them. Then after its cemented and leaking like chernobyl did, continue to chill them regularly.

Neutralize the isotope hz/frequency/whatever its called, by hitting each one with the reverse hz/sine, and it is harmless.

On top of this, put some of the pollution eating bacteria in.

They do know how to clean it up, thats why they're doing this! They can emerge in the end and clean things up!

ROFLMAO... No... There is no "reverse microwaves"... Inverse Sine is a trig function, not some magical energy wave....

Sorry to sound mean, but that whole post is hogwash.
