Obama rules out short-term debt ceiling hike

Obama has apparently rejected offers that include any short term solutions to the government shutdown.

Obama made everything *clear* during his weekly address Saturday.

Sounds like he used many standard tactics in his *address*.

President Obama signaled Saturday that he wouldn't accept the Republicans' offer for a short-term increase in the nation's debt limit.

"It wouldn’t be wise, as some suggest, to just kick the debt ceiling can down the road for a couple months, and flirt with a first-ever intentional default right in the middle of the holiday shopping season," Obama said in his weekly address.

"Because damage to America’s sterling credit rating wouldn’t just cause global markets to go haywire; it would become more expensive for everyone in America to borrow money. Students paying for college. Newlyweds buying a home," he said.

House Republicans have offered a six-week increase in the debt limit. If adopted, the plan will buy time for broader negotiations over entitlement spending and taxes, they say.

What "sterling credit rating" ?

Hopes for a deal to end the govenrment shutdown and avert a U.S. default turned to the Senate on Saturday as Republicans said their talks with the Whtie House were effectively over.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told House Republicans at a morning conference meeting that there has been little progress in negotiations with the White House.

Other members said talks had now shifted from the House to the Senate.

"The focus is now on the Senate cloture vote and the Obama-Collins deal," said Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.).

He was referring to centrist GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), who has formulated a plan to raise the debt ceiling until Jan. 15, and to fund the government for six months.

Sounds like the flag stays upside wrong for a bit longer! Should be fun to see what happens after the 17th and nothing gets done...

Buckle up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!

Wouldn't obama's inability to negotiate also be kicking the can down the road?

Seems to me that's what all this is about. Kicking the can down the road while the water gets a little warmer.

With the current approval of congress at the level it is...

and Obama not having to worry about re-election...

Well with how the Right has treated him...

Would Obama let the country burn to just get back at the Senate and House Republicans. Maybe get some "emergency" Powers...

Maybe Hold Special elections to replace congress... Where have I heard that move before... I know it sounds so familiar.

If is something I have learned from all this shutdown under Obama is that he is as anti American as he is a closed doors Muslim, he doesn't give a darn about the nation, he is an infiltrator

How do I came to this conclusion, very simple, during the close down of the national monuments and specially the memorial in DC it came to the light that he was behind the barricade so the veterans would not be able to pay their respect, he was caught sending his own white house staff to do the barricade It was in the news this week.

What that tells you, he doesn't give a crap about the American people and neither the nation.

During the Clinton administration the government was able to come to an agreement to keep the government working.

The Democrats should renounce Obama and take matters on their own hands and get back to what matters to America.

Obama is the only president in history that has surrounded himself with more Islamic fundamentalist with ties to the Muslim brotherhood, no other president has done that, he is dangerous and people fell for his skin color and demeanor even I fell for him, he is a wolf on sheep clothing.

Wake up people, look now and I dare anybody to tell me that is not Obama the one that is crapping in America the American people and the nation.

How is his ridiculous intransigence not "kicking the debt ceiling can down the road"...

Delusional. In chief.

Actually, Obama is not kicking the can, he's forcing action, whether it's a ceiling raise or a default. Obama is saying we shouldn't push it off, we should confront the issue and deal with it.

These guys really don't know what they're doing. Obama is right that this needs to be dealt with, rather than put it off for a month, a week or a year. The problem is, his refusal to discuss any aspects of Obamacare, which continues to look like a failure, is putting us in a very ugly position where default might actually happen.

To further showcase the lack of awareness of the very people who are deciding our nation's fate, Harry Reid said he was glad the stock market was closed for Columbus Day (the 14th). The markets are open Monday and the impact of their continued inability to act on the ceiling will be seen at the open.

I got the feeling that he actually wants a "default" that will bring the nation into the most dangerous situation ever been confronted in the history of this country.

The side effects and the repercussions will be devastating to our economy and unity.

I have no problem with that, we are living in a created fantasy of well being and prosperity that actually given the debt our nation have is unsustainable.

But beware of the hidden agendas of Obama, sorry to say this, but I don't trust him at all.

America can only be destroyed from within. Because to the outside world we are a fortress.

If Caesars Palace casino is anything to go by and I believe it is then rule under Caesar was good. At least his wars were profitable and not this nation building and spreading democracy foolishness where Chinese companies end up with oil contracts. What kind of nonsense is that?

I guess that makes the point then.

I think Obama and the Democrats want an end to the *debt ceiling*.

The entire concept of a *ceiling* is a complete pain in the ass for them.

Get rid of the ceiling and they can go full blast crazy with the binge spending.

Just think of the damage they could do.

Just think of the graft and corruption with no *limits*.

Is there an actual report/study/article that would show what would happen if the US defaulted?
Not doom, but an actual non-biased report?
I have looked for one, but cannot find one. Anyone care to help me?
Thanks in advance.
I agree with Beezer though, these idiots in charge cannot cooperate any better then a room full of toddlers. Shut it down or freeze their pay until they settle it. Do you think for one minute they would let the government shut down if they weren't going to get paid?

You right wings can be complete idiots..

I love how you blame the democrats, and how you blame for Obama for not taking personal responsibility ( contradiction at it's best).

You do know it was the republicans voted to shut down the government right and are now holding the government hostage until they get their way?

You also know that the right and left had made a deal and the right negated on that deal right.

Jon Stewart Calls Out Republicans For Not Owning The Shutdown: 'Don't Fart And Point At The Dog'

Jon Stewart vows to not talk about the shutdown... except for that one little bit about the Republicans saying they aren't responsible for it.

In a cathartic moment that most of us can appreciate, Stewart calls bullsh*t after rolling a clip of Speaker John Boehner admitting that he had made a deal with Harry Reid that he then broke:

"Look, you think Obamacare's a big enough threat to this country that you need to shut down the government over it, fine. Own it. Don't fart and point at the dog."

You can it leftwing BS all you want..but he provided video evidence to back it up.

I find thats of anyone who buys into a "team" when it comes to politics, the polarization of the two parties will be the death of the nation.

All captained by idiots who believe there is a difference between the Democrats and Republicans.

And rome's government ended up in debt, over extended, with wars they where fighting on multiple fronts, it became a perpetual war state.

The people where entertained by Bread and circus (Welfare and Media) to the point they voted based on what they got in hand outs and didn't care about anything else.

A republic doesn't fall with out the apathy of its people and corruption of its politicians.

Sure, it's a bipartisan issue, that requires a bipartisan solution.

It's also all fantasy.

It is mathematically impossible to pay off the U.S. debt.

Let it fall, that's probably the plan. It will happen eventually. Probably soon. The dollar has lost more than 95% of its value since our beloved scam, I mean, Federal Reserve was put into play and place.

Obamacare is a catalyst.

Deep down, there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.

IMO.

I can not find anything either, that is why I do not post any links of "what could happen on a default", yes we can debate based on what we have been spoon-fed by the media and the government depending which side you are on.

But we can also make our own intelligent conclusions base on what we know about, economics, national debt and globalism in which US is deeply involved, but also involved on how it keeps other countries indebted.

Sometimes this "terms" that government uses and we are so familiar with may have no real meaning in the world of political games, but only use for the satisfaction of a nations population that are too simple minded.

Then is the scare of believing on agendas, I do I believe is an agenda surrounding Obama.
