What "sterling credit rating" ?
President Obama signaled Saturday that he wouldn't accept the Republicans' offer for a short-term increase in the nation's debt limit.
"It wouldn’t be wise, as some suggest, to just kick the debt ceiling can down the road for a couple months, and flirt with a first-ever intentional default right in the middle of the holiday shopping season," Obama said in his weekly address.
"Because damage to America’s sterling credit rating wouldn’t just cause global markets to go haywire; it would become more expensive for everyone in America to borrow money. Students paying for college. Newlyweds buying a home," he said.
House Republicans have offered a six-week increase in the debt limit. If adopted, the plan will buy time for broader negotiations over entitlement spending and taxes, they say.
Hopes for a deal to end the govenrment shutdown and avert a U.S. default turned to the Senate on Saturday as Republicans said their talks with the Whtie House were effectively over.
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) told House Republicans at a morning conference meeting that there has been little progress in negotiations with the White House.
Other members said talks had now shifted from the House to the Senate.
"The focus is now on the Senate cloture vote and the Obama-Collins deal," said Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.).
He was referring to centrist GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), who has formulated a plan to raise the debt ceiling until Jan. 15, and to fund the government for six months.

I find your use of stars around words *distracting*.
Jon Stewart vows to not talk about the shutdown... except for that one little bit about the Republicans saying they aren't responsible for it.
In a cathartic moment that most of us can appreciate, Stewart calls bullsh*t after rolling a clip of Speaker John Boehner admitting that he had made a deal with Harry Reid that he then broke:
"Look, you think Obamacare's a big enough threat to this country that you need to shut down the government over it, fine. Own it. Don't fart and point at the dog."
