I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers too, they really make an impact on your way of thinking for years to come. However, I like the whimsical scifi movies the most... stuff like Star Wars, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc

Anyways, here's some that aren't mentioned all that often but you would probably enjoy for their psychological plots and twists:
Equilibrium
Dark City
Children of Men
The Mist
The Forgotten
Sunshine
Timecrimes
Immortel

Thank you, big time. Thank you all. That's a great list and will keep me entertained for a good while now.

You are all very kind to go to the trouble. I gave you all stars for coming here.

sending much bro'ly love to you all.

Hi there. I watched it last night. I liked it a lot.

That was a good space craft adventure. Thumbs up on that. Hope you enjoyed it, too!

A few more Japanese....
Casshern ,which i hated .
Robogeisha ...hysterical
Returner with Takeshi Kaneshiro ...
I adored Takeshi,so i see all of his movies.
He plays a shinigamai .Death god.....in a movie called shinigami no seido ...
That's the Japanese title. The foreign title is Accuracy of Death .

There's also a trilogy about shinigami called Death Note ,but I'm not sure its sci fi proper, but it has aspects of it .
L and Ryuk are awesome though

The Fifth Element
Total Recall (1990)

All of these are really thought provoking and cerebral.

Sphere - An advanced ship is discovered, sunk deep underwater, and a team of scientists is sent to investigate it. Lawrence Fishburn, Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone

Event Horizon - Almost horror/sci-fi really, but really makes you think. Basically, a ship is lost and another ship is sent to retrieve it. They learn the other ship has been to hell and back, literally. Sam Neil, others.

Abyss - A team sent to retrieve the nukes from a downed sub encounters an undiscovered intelligent lifeform. Directed by James Cameron, many actors you'd recognize.

Thanks I will look out for some of those Japanese films.

I have seen all the seasons of Red Dwarf. It is great comedy and very warm feeling, too.

Gantz is pretty cool - it's like a cross between Saw, Vanilla Sky, and any given Jet Li movie.

Sort of resurrecting this thread, to add a foreign dystopian sci-fi film if any are interested. I found The Inhabited Island (aka Prisoners of Power) to be spectacular. I stumbled on it rummaging around Dailymotion, and was blown away. It's a Russian movie, but if you can handle sometimes-not-so-great English subtitles, then you won't be disappointed. I've watched it several times now, and just ordered the English-translated book it was adapted from. Going by the old saying that "the movie doesn't do the book justice", it wouldn't surprise me if the book is even better, the movie itself was fantastic.
