Hi!

Hope y'all are keeping well.

Anyone got any good Sci Fi movies to recommend?

I've seen all the obvious ones, but always on the look out for interesting movies.

I really like the more psychological ones.

My personal favourite right now is "Vanilla Sky".

I think it is a great film and Tom Cruise sure can turn it on when he wants to act. His performance in that film is really something. What also grabs me about that film is that there are no special effects. The story line and characters carry off a great plot with there being no computer graphics as such.

I like all the obvious ones of course like "The Matrix" Trilogy and all that, but I do love those less obvious films that have a great story line.

Hope someone has some good ideas. Thanks in anticipation.

Favourite ; Bladerunner, the directors cut ( ie without the spoon fed ending and without the ridiculous narration!)

No doubt most modern sci fi has been seen, try these 50's movies:

This Island Earth
Forbidden Planet

Another very good overlooked movie is the original version of Pitch Black.

Yep, I agree!

With Sci Fi I don't think it can be carried off just with crazy effects. The story line and plot are everything.

There are so many great Sci Fi novels out there. I would have thought there could have been more adaptations of those???

I'll give "The Colony a go then for sure".

I also liked very much "A Scanner Darkly". I thought that was brilliantly done. Normally I am not big on animation, but I liked the style of the animation in that. Great story line, too.

I, too, thought "World War Z" was a bit lame. Shame, though.

Thanks, that's another two. I have not seen the Director's cut of "Bladerunner". That is one of my favourites, too.

"Forbidden Planet" is a great film. I'll give "The Island Earth" I try then, too. Thanks very much.

Maybe I'm a bit biased since my dad took the family to go see this movie when it first came out (1977)

But I think this one is hands down, my favorite Sci Fi.

For sure that is a great movie.

It is such a popular movie genre I would have thought Hollywood would be exploring this much more than it has.

Dune even if it is a mini serie not a movie.

Akira and Ghost in the shell if you like anime.

Star Trek. The last 2 ones if you are action oriented.

Riddick movies
Riddick (have not seen this one)
The Chronicles of Riddick
Pitch Black

Alien movies Prometheus (2012)?

District 9

Watchmen (2009)

Twelve Monkeys

Blade Runner

Limitless (2011)

I would see District 9 and Blade Runner if I had not seen them before. Just saw Ghost in the shell again and now I am in ghost in the shell mode watching all the series and movies again. Dune is a incredible story and the miniseries are able to get the feeling in the books on how the character is trapped by fate.

The stargate movies and tv shows always caught my interest mostly because it's a mix of modern day earth mixed with a different interpretation of ancient Egypt

Yea! Knew you guys wouldn't let me down. Getting quite a list together here.

"Europa Report" I have a good feeling about that one for some reason.

Hope you enjoy it. I'll go looking for that one, too!

I watched "Limitless" last night again. That has a great story line and the acting is superb. Robert De Niro his usual brilliant self.

I think that is a great list you drawn up. "Twelve Monkeys" is a great story. Terry Gilliam has made some excellent films. "Brazil" is well good.

I kinda liked the first series. Especially this episode is great.

If we go on series then Farscape is the most insane and hilarious series if you are a Murphy:s law fan. Everything ends up worse all the time.

I need to see this serie again. Thank for the thread it gives me ideas on what I need to resee.

If you are up for manga or anime series, watch "Attack on Titan"

No doubt the most exiting epic story I ever seen, it's been a long time since I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching a movie/series, but this one does the trick ! The animations are beautiful, the acting are great and the storyline and twist are exhilarating.

I can only recommend that you give this one a chance.

Indeed I will do just that. You sold that one to me.

I'll be keeping this thread as a what to watch next list. I am really grateful to you all because my own list has been running out and it's always good to have things recommended from personal experience .

What to recommend to you depends. Are you after something thoughtful or need a lot of ammo expended and booming noises?

I would recommend The Road as a gritty movie that will make your skin crawl at times because you can put yourself in that same situation as we become more and more aware of the world we know falls apart. It's just too damned realistic without a stupid concept or ridiculous action scenes.

Fire in the Sky is the movie made from the 1975 UFO abduction of Travis Walton. The story still hangs true despite attempts to claim that the abduction was all faked by the six young guys involved.

Then, there is the series of Mad Max movies that are fun to watch.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 movie, a cut above the genre of that day. I suggest you find the two-disk set which explains how the movie came about from the original short story and the strange twist that the movie producers felt they had to add to the original story to satisfy then current sensibilities. (That gives you a good perspective on how far we have progressed in thinking and media presentations with a way still to go.)

I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers too, they really make an impact on your way of thinking for years to come. However, I like the whimsical scifi movies the most... stuff like Star Wars, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc

Anyways, here's some that aren't mentioned all that often but you would probably enjoy for their psychological plots and twists:
Equilibrium
Dark City
Children of Men
The Mist
The Forgotten
Sunshine
Timecrimes
Immortel

That show that has me completely hooked.

The character of Mikasa for one. The character of Levi another.

Those 2 characters have me deeply involved in that show.

Eren's okay but has nothing on those 2, just utterly badass in all forms.

Also the idea of the titans, the animation of them, insane show. haha.
