Thanks for that, it seems with the Eight Immortals 'power tools' are on the menu, as it were.

The Eight Immortals (Chinese: 八仙; pinyin: Bāxiān; Wade–Giles: Pa¹hsien¹) are a group of legendary xian ("immortals; transcendents; saints") in Chinese mythology. Each Immortal's power can be transferred to a power tool (法器) that can bestow life or destroy evil. Together, these eight tools are called the "Covert Eight Immortals"

It does match that description well, an intriguing aspect, i'll have a read thanks.

“A glory shines across the coming years,
The glory of a race grown great and free.
'Twas seen by poets, sages, saints and seers,
Whose vision glimpsed the dawn that is to be.
A shining shore is by the Future's sea,
Whereon each man all stand among his peers
As equal; and to none shall bend the knee.
Awake, my soul, shake off your doubts and fears;
Behold the hosts of darkness fade and flee
Before the magic of the Morning's face;
And hear the sweet and wondrous melody
That floats to us from far-off golden days—
It is the choral song of liberty
It is the anthem of the coming Race”

The period in question for Greek influence is, as i quoted, from the 4th century BCE up to the 5th century CE, a 9 century potential time frame for those Taoist carvings.

Could they just be water storage reservoirs that were made by the Chinese 1000 BC ?

Amazing man made caves... I am very interested at the sound characteristics of ancient monuments . Obviously ancient civilizations gave importance to the sound. This ''no resonance'' inside the caves, reminds me of the Mikinian Necromantio in central Greece, Which was destroyed completely by early christians, who have also build a church above the sad ruins

the underground was also made to have no sound resonance

and the building reminds me the ancient structures of Peru...

This ''no resonance'' inside the caves

...is probably due to the fluting on all the surfaces and is probably why they were carved in that way. That kind of treatment is a good way to break up acoustic reflections.

Which suggests that these caves were used as auditoriums of some kind.

The various questions and postulated answers in this post so far seem to ignore some well known facts.

1. How was this done? : by thousands of workers over many years, we see only the finished article.
2. Why does no-one know about it? : if changes in weather caused flooding and the complexes were abandoned, the knowledge of them could be lost in as few as 3 generations (165 years approx)
3. How were the surface marks made? : the surface marks are simple chiseled finishing marks, they're seen in many stoneworks around the world spanning many thousands of years. The basic excavation is carried out by unskilled masons directed by designers, once each setion is very roughly complete the highly skilled masons are used to finish off the stone faces giving them whatever design was agreed upon.

Of course these complexes are extremely beautiful but I see nothing that cannot be accomplished by a massive labour force.

oh and the circular holes in the columns? they were a favourite way to create raised platforms by using poles bound with ropes inserted into the columns and then bound again making safe and reusable raised platforms. The original scaffolding method!

WOW!!!

This is a brill find. A thousand flags if possible.

One of the photos struck me more than the others and thats this one:

I see a face carved into the wall on the right and this face reminds me of the one's at Giza in Eygpt. I really have to start believing even more that these Ancients were from elsewhere if indeed this face turns out to be that of the same peoples at Giza!

I think there must be more of these underground if you think of all the underwater water caves which are found all over but just the water hasn't been pumped out.

I reckon this goes further than the Taoists, much much further.....

Im blown away, that whoever built these, knew that Arched ceilings are much stronger, and that the inner ceilings need to be supported with columns. Either this points to these caves not being Old, or they are very Old, and we derive our Architecture and engineering from past civilizations that were on another level of understanding

I also thought about this when I first saw the photos.... reminded me of a thread last year where a few guys in Italy (I think) got together and built an underground Palace!

How was the rock carved out so precisely and effectively back then?

Some of the grooves look to me like they were done by machines (modern day machines). Notice the equally spaced grooves on some of the walls.

did they use some kind of mortar or plaster finish on those walls?

regardless, the artisanship is superb; 500 BC, huh

over 2,500 years ago at least...awesome

how can you build this? with what?

through ancient mastery of chi even a stick could have done the job
or even their bare hands?

examples:
pulverizing done via use of those "vibrations" that P.O. the "sane" to no end

seriously, digger machines?, why is it that some can't seem to conceive anything being done without machines?

Imagination, it's how we "Crazy" people get by...

It appears to be clearly evident that these cave systems were not constructed with hand tools. The consistently present curved scoring marks would be pointless to etch by hand after removing large undesirable excess rock with a chisel.

Awesome post! S+F

Wow, what an awesome find. I never even heard of these caves, much less seen pictures. Pretty mind blowing, to say the least and I really wonder who built them and when.

F&S for the OP

Thank you for posting this, I for one had no clue as to the existence of these grottoes and this has just opened an entire new subject of interest for me. Its FAR beyond me as to why nobody brings attention to these structures, i guess in 2000 they said "Oh look a cave" and gave up. I would love to know more about these sites and how they were built. Cheers!

while i am quite "insane", yes i do.

you do realize that it is a "fictional cartoon" being used for purely illustrative purposes
sort of like the cartoons NASA uses, for say, the dynamics of a black hole being formed

AS NASA DOES NOT HAVE ONE JUST LAYING ABOUT TO "SHOW YOU".

"right L
L "

perhaps you could use a little Imagination, as even a little goes a long way...

Very interesting! S+F

I hate to sound like the crazy hair guy on ancient aliens, but the markings on the walls/ceilings look a whole lot like tool marks to me, as if these were mechanically excavated. Although, they obviously didn't have excavation machinery back then. Hmmm...
