Do you have Java enabled? Its a real time seismolet.

Holy crap 5.8 clicks down? thats basically the surface. I could see a wave being created with this one, hope its small but that depth is super shallow!

P waves are the first waves that are produced by the earthquake. They travel in an up and down form (to keep it simple) while S-waves travel back and forth. P waves are faster than S waves. The epicenter is determined by the time between the P and S waves and multiple seismographs to pinpoint the location.

Lata is the provincial capital of Temotu Province, Solomon Islands. As of 2007, it has 553 inhabitants. There are a few rest houses for overnight stays. There is a Post office, Telecom office and numerous stores. It contains a small air strip with flights to Makira and Honiara. Shipping service is irregular but occasionally transport can be found to Honiara or the outer islands. Outboard canoe travel around the island of Nendo or to the Reef Islands is possible.

stay safe Latas.. super close to the Epi.

Yeah, get the HECK away from the coast...

I say that to all on the northeastern Australia coast too. Be very careful. I see a possible zone destabilization here. Meaning there could be a very very big quake, as in 9+.

OH so you see something bigger happening, well buy the activity of the last few days it looks possible.

OH man, a friend and I used to keep constant track of the ring of fire but I don't keep up on it like I used to.

TA, is this another big one coming in? Ack! It looks big
edit on 2/5/2013 by Olivine because: (no reason given)

Maybe the same amplitude as the Mag 8.0?
edit on 2/5/2013 by Olivine because: (no reason given)

Smaller aftershock, the duration was much shorter. Maybe 6.9 or 7.0 is my guess.

Only a few hours ago I was looking at this cluster of quakes in this region and thought, hmmm. It didn't sit we'll. Then BAM. Shallow 8.0. All the best to our Aussie friends. Looks like a dangerous quake. If this is a foreshock our humanity will need a lot of help.

You know what's odd, up here in south jersey, there's been loud rumblings in the air the past 2 days. Yesterday and today. My dog actually started barking at it today, it was so loud. It just makes me wonder...

This makes me literally feel sick. Santa Cruz is where I grew up, for all intents and purposes. I lived about thirty miles distant, in Fremont - but spent every moment I could in Santa Cruz.

I pray that the people are OK. The boardwalk can be rebuilt and the beaches will always be beaches, regardless. But the people in that area are what make it so magical.

~Heff

ETA - now that I follow the links I see it's a totally different Santa Cruz. Still, same prayers apply.
