So I just stood my ground against a mob of communist morons trying to forcibly close me down today.

While there are some very questionable unions out there with ties to the underworld, unethical approach to the way they handle things and can be violent and thuggish.

There are a few unions that do actiually care about the people who work in their industries (though far and few between).

Remember too, for the most part, if it were not for a union of one sort or another, you would still be working 15hr shifts, seven days a week, with no meal/rest breaks and for 1/4 of what you earn now.

Unions do have their place and without them, the world would quickly slip back into the victorian age in terms of employer/employee relations.

There are governments that do the same. Except people are more eager to demonize unions before government or heck even corporations.

And yeah many people are used to their 8hr work week... there used to be longer work shifts that were only changed due to people who called for labor reform which was lead by many including unions.

It is very easy to forget what unions and many have done to improve the conditions of the laborer. Get rid of unions and you will see all of their work repealed little by little.

Okay... what's with the stereotyping? I lean so far to the right that I can press my ear to the tracks and hear a train coming a mile away, all without bending over. Still, I'm also the one to point out the OP's slip-up by mentioning his "NY blood". And no, he didn't get a star or flag from me... mostly because his rambling rant was clearly crafted with the intention of inciting people against unions (not that I agree with unions) instead of telling what occurred.

I worked in the US up until 5 years ago. I worked here as a waiter for 4 years. An opened my little cafe using all my savings and a little help from my dad.

I love my job, though you don’t get to see you kids except for once a week like you were divorced or something, you don’t get any holidays the other industries get, you have to work overtime almost every other day with no extra pay for it, ect....

That said, we HAVE jobs. While everyone else is looking for a job that is not "below" them, we are working feeding our families. I have met MANY people whom I offered a job to when I could have them, or let them know of jobs as I found them, which told me they couldn’t be a waiter....GOD FORBID someone they know sees them, or my favorite....I am not a people person....

oh and the poster before you saying that unions are good guys.....no, just no. They might do some good for an individual worker here or there, but take for example this strike. They have ignored us in the hospitality industry because we don’t get half as much financial help from the state, so there is not as much money to ask for under the table, also union representatives don’t like to work as waiters. They like office jobs or industrial jobs where going to get a tool can take up to half an hour and they can easily be absent from work.

In a restaurant or bar, EVERY waiter is accounted for and must work 100% of the time, that is why there is not 1 waiter that is a union representative. That is why the people marching yesterday had to beg and search for waiters to support them. We remember that in the good times when money abounded they would come to our places of work and break our balls, order up the most expensive crap and were very much full of themselves. NOT to mention that they never gave a damn when they would keep us up all night with their drinking making us do overtime for free, and they knew it. Or when they would try and get us fired because we were not completely submissive to their attitudes.

We remember, they rubbed it in our faces enough not thinking they would ever need us. Well now they do. That is why for the first time in 40 years there is a strike in the hospitality industry for better wages. WE negotiated that on our own and as a collective all asked for better wages and got them. THEY did nothing.

You know why the unions are trying to make the biggest show possible this year and draw support? Because next year the government will not give them even half of the subsidies they get now. THAT is the only reason.

They were SILENT when every single austerity measure was being announced and planned for, but when they realized that their subsidy was going out the window as well, THEY freaked the F out. We were all happy to see the scum bags have to work like the rest of us they pushed around and acted condescending to for all these years.

Waiters have been the lowest of the low. Servants to servants. Slaves.

That said, you don’t last almost 15 years working in it unless you love your job and are good at it. One or two year waiters come and go. They do it for some quick cash. Lifelong waters and people in the hospitality industry do it because we just like it. Some people inherited that legacy. So we are not up in arms for the conditions we grew up in or have been living with for many years.

Unions want to make a fuss because they need all the support they can get so they can get better bribes and conditions for their staff.

I have a customer who is a doctor here. She told me of a similar time when the unions MADE the doctors strike for better pay. You know what happened. They won. Not better pay for the doctors...no. The unions got "talones" like checks, for paid time off from work. They were handed out like the spoils of war. That was their main reason for making the strike that year, they were running low on those "talones", so they needed to get someone to strike.

and on and on it goes...

probably, I want to move back to the states and until I can sign up for enlistment and be called up to 6 months can pass since there is no rapid deployment now for the army (what the recruiter told me). SO guess what I will be doing in the mean time? WORKING, because I dont have any shame in it.

also, I dont respond well to intimidation. In fact I let all inhibitions go and try to make you realize why you dont threaten someone, you either do what you will or dont. They can kiss my ass. I will not back down from my convictions if I dont have to.

Round two is new years eve night. and round three is the three kings night.

I will have MUCH more on my side then. People dont like them and will be out in droves. THEN the cops will be there for their protection, trying to ruin new years and three kings day for the kids......yeah try it jerks.

Good for you OP.

There's nothing worse than a f@#$%ng communist doing "direct action". I'm happy to talk with the Pinkos and discuss their ideology and mine (which is vaguely Anarcho-Libertarian but don't tell anyone) until the cows come home, but as soon as they start forcing their agenda onto those who have no interest, they become a problem.

Good on you for not taking the bait and getting all abusive and violent - that's what they wanted you to do. Then they can call you a bourgeoisie fat cat who's exploiting his workers and getting into fisticuffs with the glorious red brigades who are there to save the workers and help ensure better working conditions through their half-assed calls for general strikes and such before moving onto the next town like some Clint Eastwood style "Man With No Name" but with a highly unfashionable Karl Marx hairdo instead of the cool Eastwood cowboy hat and poncho.

Didn't Spain already have this discussion about commies (and fascists) in the early 1930s?

LOL @ "smelly man beast of a woman"

My guess is half the people here just agree with the title and don't bother reading the whole thread, there has been a few set-ups in the past to catch how many people do this, and a ton of people fell for it.

I'm far more left than I am centrist, but I gave him a star and a flag too. You see, the Commos are not the perfect poster-boys and girls for a utopian society - they are about control and "political purity" and that makes them as bad as those they purport to ideologically oppose. Happily though, it's a failed ideology that no one but the Pinkos themselves take seriously. We'll never have to live under communist rule.

I'm loving the indignant howling on this thread - must have been a "deeply reactionary" original post indeed. Time to activate the "propaganda groups" kids, and salvage this unacceptable piece of redbaiting.

THEY say they are communists. and YOU have no idea what I do or don’t know...

I hear the crap the talk about. They are F-ing Marxists. If you knew anything about communism you would see the damage that can cause to a society, even if you did support a form of communism, or any form or socialism aimed at "equality"....

they are extremist SCUM....You have no idea what you are talking about. I am here, and I know them.

so is supporting communism with no historical evidence of success but instead a legacy of abuses of power and complete corruption, just because of the noble ideals it has, and the BS you can talk seeming like a well informed douche.

I am a coffee guy, I spend much free time in cafes. Next time read your damn propaganda books at home instead of passively advertising them hoping to strike up a conversation with a girl you are too scared to even make eye contact with if she expects you to work and not be a social parasite.

exactly man. I actually agree that the constitution here has been violated and that is unacceptable. Public health IS PROTECTED and untouchable, as are other things. I don’t like the concept being an American, but a countries constitution is sacred. So that to me is just terrible. They should cut their own spending on BS before touching that. Like I said it is sacred to Spain and Europe in general. Unacceptable.

What is also unacceptable is trying to push me around with threats and punishments just because I won’t scream YAY you, and follow the leader so you get your spot on the news and talk shows to push your private agenda I don’t know who is sponsoring.

EVERYONE thinks what is being done is wrong. They don’t get to become our representatives because they happen to have hired muscle

you know where I made my money to open my business here in Spain? IN the US working my ass to the bone.

That is where my father made it as a business owner after being an immigrant who barely spoke English.

You know what immigrants do here in Europe? They find a crappy job that keeps them right where they are in the social ladder. Or WORSE.....

That is why I am leaving. Cutting my losses and leaving this place to the moochers who will get in power eventually.

You can’t live the good life as was done here for many years (self admitted by everyone here) without paying for the party eventually. WAY TOO much excess with hardly any real production and work to support it.

I miss home too....have for a couple years now. I like it here and all, the people are nice. BUT I am home sick, BAD.....

well last general strikes were particularly damaging for the union´s credibility. They did the same things to people in all businesses. The local market around the corner was closed by thugs walking in with sticks, screaming and kicking over garbage cans. They hospitalized a couple truckers and cab drivers last transportation strike in northern Spain.

read up on it before blindly choosing a side. They are harassing people for not supporting them in a "supposed" democracy.

The miners and dock workers here have actual BATTLES with police in riot gear. They throw Molotov cocktails and fire explosive rockets at the police. They destroy train tracks and block roads with burning barriers, and GOD FORBID you try and cross anyways. You get a mob beat down and your vehicle wrecked. Miners revolts scare the crap out of everyone. People have died in years past. The communist groups and official parties are always involved. Union leadership are card carrying, it is an unofficial requirement to get into the union leadership.
