OWS peacefull movement didnt work that well ..
the US cops really know how to handle protesters
everyone in the world thoughs the revolution would start in the US
maybe we were wrong and the US will be the last country to be really affected by protesters

I'm kinda' glad some Americans were sleeping, otherwise more would have fallen for it.

Yes, we're pissed at the bankers, that's common ground, but this is about destabilization.

There are certain entities who really hoped we'd all be running around with pitchforks by now.

Maybe give us some time to detox from all those sugary 32 Oz. sodas and try again.

Flame suit donned!

ETA: scanning the Sats for any live feeds.. if I catch anything, I'll post it up.

Very important information, thanks for posting this thread, Ben81.

There is a lack of news about this and they are trying to downplay it. It is apparently happening in multiple locations around Spain. I have heard that the police have been driving the protestors back, but we shall see.

It hasn't come to America yet for one reason only, our .gov is very busy trying to keep the people fat and happy, as soon as that stops, things will be different.

We all know how out of control things get here when the people are roused, we burn entire cities, LA riots anyone.

This iss of course not to mention, that our citizens have more than enough guns and the will to use them ( see American gun violence statistics) when we are angry.

If things get that bad here, our .gov will fall.

Riot police have ringed the Spanish parliament in Madrid after clashing with demonstrators as thousands of protesters gather for a march against austerity tagged "Surround Congress". Nine people have been injured and 15 arrested, local media report.

nice picture thats a 1000 vs 1 .. they must be pissing their pants the piggy
that make the cops really nervous out of focus
any mistakes they make can be fatal for them ..
any bad move from the cops can throw oil on the big fire
they should all say to the protesters .. now
"ok you win guys you can go take the parlement and put the trash out"
yes Officer Sir !

Please delete this or report it to a Mod. I'm having another spasm I can't control.

When you're as poor as the Spaniards are, some can't even afford shoes, and you're running down a stone street, you're going to get some pretty raw footage.

I'm so, so, sorry.

When you have not much left to loose, with only a little to hang on to, then its a fight worth tearing asunder for because they know it will only get worse with how it is going and loose what little they have. So they will continue to fight because it has already begun and the momentum has picked up. No turning back, especially for Spanish blood. When they take up a cause..................typically they go all the way.

I remember growing up with stories about how villages would kill themselves off completely before the enemy could bring them to their knees. If there is an obvious sense of injustice, to the Spaniard this is War! So I really don't see this dying out due to policing or other measures of control.

What? The reporter just tried to place things in perspective using a simple analogy.

The only thing coming out of your comment is your elitist attitude. Perhaps some people aren't so caught up in everything as much as you or others, but why are you looking down your nose on them when they are trying to learn? Why the name calling?

I was kinda thinking this also. I mean the police there must surley know that they have been had also or will be from these austerity measures? Or maybe the whole world has gone completely mad.

I have lived in Spain for extended times recently. I have many good friends there and most are/were pretty unaware of how bad it was. It seemed as though there was a media black out on the recent bailouts and credit down grading of some very large banks. I have heard nothing from anyone in Madrid on this yet. It will be very interesting to follow, I suspect it may play out in other countries like Portugal, Greece, Italy, Ireland and hopefully it catches on here as well. We need to replace our capitalist "made by (insert large corpoaorations here)" Gov'ts with a true democracy and regain rights lost recently with the many bills written to clearly strip us from ever having a government actually responsible to the people. It's unfortunate it has come to this in most countries today.

Well....why don't they join them? I have never understood the mentality of people who are on the riot squad. They are humans too...and don't they realize who they are protecting? Thats right...the rich, the "elite", the very people who are the root cause for the protests to begin with. Why? Why would they protect them? Can anyone on ATS who is a member of law enforcement explain your logic as to why you don't take the people's side? The excuse of "just following orders"...or "its how I get paid" is a cop out. (no pun intended) Is it that being a riot officer requires psychopaths who have no emotions whatsoever? Shouldn't you be helping your fellow countrymen instead of fighting with them? Meanwhile, the bankers and corrupt politicians hide behind these riot officers, and sometimes soldiers, as though these people (police) are not human beings, but emotionless, unsympathetic paid thugs who care more about a paycheck than the bigger picture.

Please enlighten me as to how you (riot police) can even sleep at night knowing that you are not doing the right thing, you are not protecting or serving your country by not siding with it's people.

Richard Wolff has a great new talk on the economic crisis - he covers europe a lot

So France put in a socialist government and changed the tax on the rich from 45% to 75% and then hired 40,000 new teachers.

As Richard Wolff says it's cosmetic but a good start. He gets into the cooperative movement in Spain - Madragon in particular -- and how that should happen in the U.S. and how Italy makes that an official option for the unemployed -- take all their unemployment benefits at once if they do the same with 10 other people to start up a new business collective together.

So there are alternatives to "austerity" as Europe calls it. The disparity of wealth is more now than it ever has been and the successful history of these crises in the past is to tax the rich so that the government can employ people.

Listen to the new Wolff talk and consider his history of the U.S. and his global overview.
