Didn't you ask anyone what it meant or why it was there?

It looks like everyone "lost their shirts". The men have collars and the devil has a cumberbund (Is that what it is called - that waist piece worn with Tuxs)

You'd think people would complain about the exposed breast being a bad influence on poor children.

I think the Devil was giving the bull horns sign with his hands. It does appear that his finger is pointing at the woman in the portrait but i'm still going with bull horns.

Yes your right - He is giving a bulls horns sign as you say.

Well this picture confirms us who tell that satan really exists and his is behind our worlds bad situation. Some ATS members support that satan does not exist and whatever happens is just humans fault.

The truth is There Is GOD, There Is satan! For humanity 's good we all have to accept that!

I could paint a picture of woodland fairy's but it does not mean they exist
If I claimed they did - No doubt ATS folk would ask for proof rather than make a blanket statement
Are you really concerned with salvation of souls and want others to join your club or are you afraid you could be wrong?

As someone has pointed out, this is probably not Satan but Pan.

But, even if this was a painting of Satan, how does that prove his existence. I guess by your logic, this painting proves the existence of Pan!

I'm not arguing that there isn't a "God". I'm arguing that YOU, personally, don't know s**t about it. Neither do I, and neither does anyone here.

Why? Because 2% of the time, we ponder what the truth is. 90% of the time, however, we ponder how we feel about what the truth might be, and then we spend the remaining 8% of our time looking for the next best thing...which, obviously, is probably not going to be the truth.

But hey, truth is subjective, right? I mean, if you think about it hard enough, you'll start seeing purple polka dot miniature elephants everywhere...

Don't forget Baphomet, pagan god of wisdom and fertility. Google features Baphomet's image under its own name and under "Satan".

Silly Google...

Pan was an ancient Pagan God - Later becoming Bacchus of Greek fame
The serpent represented knowledge in ancient cultures way before Christianity

Of course when one religion conquers another it demonises their gods

Just curious as to who's shadow is to the right of the clown?

Interesting.

Star and Flag just because I love the painting!

I see artwork of massive interest in most buildings such as courts all over the world......nothing unusual in it being in a dutch court, in fact I'd expect such works there!

My thoughts exactly, Europeans are so liberal especially in The Netherlands

Isn't it great, in fact I want a copy...Well actually I'd rather the original but hey....

The cover of both books says: "regelrecht" which in english means: "directly"

To translate regelrecht into english you need to account for the more subtle meanings. Yes regelrecht as a whole means directly but.... it could also be translated as right (standing in your...).

Regel can also mean: rule (regulation); line (like the line you are writing on.); habit; standard etc.
Recht could be : straight (perpendicular); justice; being inclined to etc.

Even more subtle are meanings embedded into words by their intuitive usage in sayings and their backlash onto the title in part and as a whole.

Regelrecht houses a lot of subtle meanings where directly is just one translation without the hidden clues. The title is poetry, and poetry can't be translated. At least not adequate enough to equal the original.

So maybe the beauty of this very eloquent painting is that it doesn't have just one meaning...

It says whatever we want to see.

The dutch word "Regelrecht"...it is a word composed of two words. those two words translated..

."Regel".....; a sentence, rule, line, regulation...to the letter.
"recht"....... Law, justice, straight, claim.

The composed word "regelrecht", as the one word can be translated as .. clear, directly, straight, perpendicular, plain, sheer, blatant, downright.

As we all know artist like to be creative...even with the titles of their art.

Personally I think that this painting suggest that what happens in court isn't always what a person should expect. Justice isn't always served...inspiration, ideas and final conclusions might originate from other sources.

What the hell are you talking about? That's not the devil
. . . It's Mr. Tumnus.

This looks Masonic to me. Her left breast is exposed.

And that is the devil ~ horns x2 and he is cloven-hooved.

Also, his pants are black and yellow striped. There is a line of thinking that states that bees represent Satan's bloodline on earth.

I'd translate it slightly differently ~ king's law or king's justice.

The left breast of a female exposed is not Masonic - It is often used in Art to show Motherhood and Nurture
The devil is not part of Masonary
The bee is very ancient and even found in symbols of Ancient Egypt
