Eccentric, Depressive,Autistic etc who cares? Whats the reason to call yourself with a name? The point is whatever kind of unique person you are, cause we are all unique, you need to find where you fit. Not just saying I'm this and that and I accept it. Do what you please to,what you think is right and learn from all the experience. It all comes down eventually to making yourself feel good about what you are doing. Not just good, but really good to reach a state of bliss where you know that everything is right and as it is ment to be. Nice thread s n f

Let me see if I understand your objections. You believe I am actually unwell/insecure, as opposed to eccentric, and am leading people down a false sense of security of thinking they are also eccentric when it is really that they too are unwell? Is this along the lines of what you are saying?
I think your OP is filled with insecurities, as I have pointed out many times. I think, considering you thread title and comments you have made, it is false to state these are eccentricities.

Acknowledging my eccentricities has helped me come to terms with the person I am - it's not an attention-seeking label.
I have never claimed you are merely seeking attention, although one could logically claim that you have sought attention by creating this thread. I personally don't believe you created this thread simply for attention.

Much of my eccentric behaviour takes place when I am alone or around people I feel comfortable being myself around. Eccentric does not mean one has to act like a character in a movie or play where hyperbole is generally used to great effect.
If you could point out the eccentricities in your OP, that would be great. So posters and members can distinguish between the "dark stuff" in your OP and your "eccentricities".

Naturally we are more receptive to views of others that we agree with or can relate to, and are less receptive of views which clash with our own. This is not just me, it is human nature!
I agree.

But I still acknowledge and respond to dissenting views, as I am doing right now. (Only when I feel somebody is trolling, I tend not to answer). I am not sure why you have referred to what I said as a lie. Care to elaborate on how I lied?

I thing the lie is obvious, the OP is filled with insecurities, by straight out undeniable definition.
They are not eccentricities.
Having the insecurities in the OP does not make you eccentric, it makes you insecure. Regardless of what eccentriities you claim to have, the OP is a diary of insecurities.

I have stated this twice already. Clearly, in english, with the defintions provided and with examples as to why I think what I do.

If you think it is healthy or well, positive or beneficial to have those insecurities and label them eccentricities, fine.
But they are what they are.

Like I stated earlier, I am confident I can comprehend the different definitions of the words eccentric and insecure. I have insecurities, but I would not describe myself as an insecure individual;
Thats interesting, because you say you have eccentricities and are happy to call your self an eccentric person.

I do not continually seek the approval or comfort of a third party to reassure me of my faults. I believe that is a key aspect of one who is an insecure individual
I never said you did, the OP did.

"You feel like you don't belong, yet you long to be. If only conversations in your head counted as social interaction with others, you would be the social butterfly that society expects of you".

Longing to belong, and fullfilling societies expectations.
I would say that would be seeking approval.

Thanks again for replying to my posts.
Its a big thread and I appreciate the time you have taken to consider, and reply to my posts.

Cheers

The fact that this thread has gotten almost 150 flags actually negates the idea that you are eccentric or different.
It makes what you talk about rather common.
What you describe in no way makes you eccentric, but it might make you self-absorbed, perhaps even egotistical.
What I see is people seeking self-validation through anti-social behaviors and thinking.

If you don't actually do anything that makes you unique you're fluffing up your ego by believing that your thought processes makes you so.
You claim to be "different" but really have no way of knowing what most people think.
You call the MSM a pack of lies yet use it as a yardstick to measure society at large and gauge how others think and feel.

DO something different and I'll believe you really are eccentric.
Until then we're really just the same as about 6 billion other people on the planet all busy thinking they are unique too.

If you add listening to other people from your parents and employers till you have given up all dreams and ambitions and reached a semi state of agoraphobia that would be me some times it gets so bad that I feel like I hate the whole human race

Doesn't everyone feel like the OP as a young adult?

I take it that you are still supported by your parents. When you progress to later stages in life, you will have too little time on your hands and be too physically busy and tired to spend as much time 'thinking'.

Again, doesn't almost everyone feel like that when they are a young adult?

Life is a process. You are going through one of life's stages.

I can completely relate with most of this... the points where I can't relate, to be honest, were probably overcomed thanks to the help of psychoanalysis.

I'm not getting the whole meaning of your post though... you present this case, in which a lot of people can relate to, but there's no 'aim', or no conclusion (as far as I understood, I might be wrong), so my question is: What do we do with it?

What the hell is wrong with you???

I get the impression you feel threatened for some reason, why do you feel the need to insult him again and again for no reason whatsoever?

What are you threatened by?

And for those saying this would describe a majority of people, yeah right.. ATS isn't really representative of the population even if it has become more popular these last years.. so now all of a sudden ATS ISN'T filled with nonconformists or eccentrics?
All the other days of the week you've got people complaining about mental illness or people out of touch with reality.. of course you'll get a bunch of people that can relate to 'being different' on a site about FRINGE subjects, that's simple statistics, it doesn't make it the norm.
Try talking about these subjects around regular people at work and tell me they won't look at you like you're absolutely nuts.

I get the feeling that a certain demographic on ATS feels irritated or threatened by people that declare themselves to be 'different', or from their point of view, special in a narcissistic way.
Maybe they're conformists.. or perhaps they're nonconformist nonconformists.. that cute little slice of the fringe movement that feels the need to be the contrarian among the contrarians, since being 'special' isn't special enough.. lol, I don't know man.. this world is crazy, all these subcultures and groups.. my head is spinning already thinking about this subject.

Personally I am what I am.. I don't try to fit in, and I don't try not to fit in, I don't care for social games or the rat race, it is what it is..

Eccentricity is not, as dull people would have us believe, a form of madness. It is often a kind of innocent pride, and the man of genius and the aristocrat are frequently regarded as eccentrics because genius and aristocrat are entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd.

Love that quote.. "entirely unafraid of and uninfluenced by the opinions and vagaries of the crowd."
Isn't that ATS in a nutshell?

Here's another:

"
To seek understanding before taking action, yet to trust my instincts when action is called for. Never to avoid danger from fear, never to seek out danger for its own sake. Never to conform to fashion from fear of eccentricity, never to be eccentric from fear of conformity.
"

Never to be eccentric from fear of conformity.. both ends of the spectrum can be shallow in their own way.

In my experience it's most often the 'normal people' that tries to be special, like leftist hipsters trying to define themselves with keffiyehs and second hand clothing, not appreciating the irony that they all end up looking like each other, on the other hand, outcasts or people that don't fit in often TRIES to fit in without succeeding, not always though, it varies of course, perhaps depending on confidence but I bet most go through a period like that.

Just be.......

Be very carefull of the voices in your head part as sounds a bit like early schizophrenia and that never ends well.Isolation drives every human insane, and they all started talking to themselves in their head at first then out loud when they were mad.All people need social interaction to remain sane as we are social creatures.Solitary confinment is the worst punishment a human can suffer, not many if any come through it without mental damage.Talk to people, not over internet but face to face,we all need someone to talk to,we all need friends,it confirms what we are and is our very essence

Yeah, but difference is relative, and if we feel it as individuals, then there must be an element of truth to it.

By the way, I know its off topic (although not entirely as your name means truth in part) My daughter's name is Verity, love that name

I suppose it is relative... But in my opinion just because we "feel" it as individuals doesn't make it true. also off topic as well I love the name verity too it's so so sooooo like... easy going.

It's a good vantage point. I think many on here are probably like that.

One problem though....

Your describing the excentric person who has self esteem problems. The other excentric is like what you described but without being overly self critical because they've gotten over the self esteem problems and are confident in who they are, and could care less what others think of them and are not dealing with an inferiority complex.

Really I don't know what to say. I guess not much. This was written beautifully and explains the way I have felt since being a child. As I read your post I felt such a release of emotions.

The last few yrs for me have been slightly easier as I've stopped trying to conform and be "normal"
It's amazing the amount of stress I've taken off myself by just being me.

It's taken a long time, down a long road, to finally embrace and openly share my weirdness. I am finally ME and that's just FINE!

Again, Thank you!!!
FYI I haven't logged on in a while (laziness) but I HAD to say thank you for this one.

So sad you accept a label the system gives to the type of personality that the system labels because it has rejected. I hope you don't take the drugs, the drugs are intended to cripple the person you are.

If I can't have a real conversation with someone, forget it. I have no interest in hearing petty pleasantries from anyone. Society needs to get real, get in touch with everything going on (even the ugly), and let's start to progress instead of get lost more and more in fantasy.

I couldn't agree more. I say this comes from the issue of honesty, truth. Everyone hates when they are lied too but they do it all the time. Little lies to spare someone feelings, yadda yadda. Imagine a world where no one lied. I say this world would be a different place if Truth was more than lipservice.

What do you mean accept the label, what am i supposed to call it when im describing it then, and no i don't get the meds for it because they are way to hard to get where im from. im just seeing a psychologist to kind of help me with it for now. Most people think im weird because i don't always tell them what i have, or whats wrong with me. I used to take the meds a while ago and they helped me be more how i was when i was younger, life is a lot harder for me now but i try to manage.

I actually feel relieved, I've recently felt like I had a mental disorder and had completely deluded myself into thinking I was intelligent my whole life. Well anyways thanks, at least I know I don't have anything wrong with me.

Most introverts will relate to this. "Eccentric"? Well, if you prefer the term. It has a superficial feel to it in my opinion, as it only touches the surface of what lies deep inside.
I'm very amused at everyone in this thread who said "brilliant,me too", "i'm flagging this" etc..when it's nothing but the surface they relate to. But that's something too.
Someone mentioned the Forer effect..and that's spot on, reminds me of those channeled messages about being "indigo" and so on. We all struggle so it is easy to relate to the misfits.
I'd like to hear more from you, but who in their right mind would put deeper things for everyone to see. I think this is your way of reaching out/trying to find people to relate to because you're experiencing that feeling of disconnectedness. And that in itself is brilliant I think.
