As Greece prepares for elections on June 17 amid an overwhelming popular rejection of austerity, the ruling class is making secret preparations for a military crackdown against the workers. These preparations are taking place in parallel with more public discussions within the European Union on financial mechanisms to penalize Greece, should the Greek population vote to reject EU austerity demands.

The Greek Elections will certainly see the greek public reject austerity. European politics is highlighting the fact that capitalist democracy is a farce. It seems that even if the public vote against accepting a bail out the country will still be forced to pay one way or another. Why cant they just go bakrupt? Why does the International Community have to penalize them? What are they,Cuba? North Korea? Iran? We should be helping them find conditions that help them back on their feet, not penalizing them. Autarky seems the only solution for Greece. The world has turned on them. They should refuse to pay and close the borders and exile the elites. Anyway,it seems the elites in Greece are concerned about the fact that the Greece public will not get what they want.

There would be immediate moves to repress social opposition. The article states: “Over the two days, leaders would have to calm civil unrest while managing a potential sovereign default, planning a new currency, recapitalizing the banks, stemming the outflow of capital and seeking a way to pay bills once the bailout lifeline is cut.

www.wsws.org...
Basically, the elites are saying that the if the public will not accept austerity and continue with the charade that is capitalist democracy then the elites will declare Martial Law and force austerity unto the Greek people. I wonder how far the Greeks can be pushed before they rebel. I also wonder if there are any ambitious Generals in the Greek military. I really feel bad for the Greeks.

They will be changing their currency overnight (in theory, i dont think it will really happen), and that will create serious upheaval.

Greece may have only a 46-hour window of opportunity should it need to plot a route out of the euro..

“Leaving is difficult and messy, so anyone who thinks it’s easy is just wrong,” said Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, who left the European Central Bank’s executive board last year, in a phone interview. “The Greeks must be rational and protect themselves from rash decisions that they will live to regret. Leaving the euro is not the answer to their problems.” He declined to say whether he thought an exit would occur.

The way they have it set up,if a guy wins that is not from a traditional major party they find it difficult to form government. Im pretty sure they had to call new elections because they could not agree on austerity.

The duopoly type system prevents minor parties from sweeping to power. It seems to take years before a party can gain any real poltical power because it must hold seats. Its dumb. I am starting to think that a dictator is the way to go.

So you think Democracy is 'dumb' and any minority party should be able to hold political power over the entire country?

And you would prefer a dictatorship??

Wow.

interesting article, thanks. The situation in greece is dangerous not just for the greeks but for the whole of europe. democracy has been cast aside in favour of the financial corporations. found it interesting the links between the police and fascist parties. i've noticed in the uk that policemen tend to be right wing and or racist. Europe is controlled by germany again, we all know what happened last time that was the case. PEACE.

Yes. I have read about the Golden Dawn being linked to the police before. Sounds very familiar to the nazi party hey. The Golden Dawn seem to be using the very same tactics that the nazi party used to rise to power. The conditions are similar in Greece to those of germany pre nazi party.

Yes.

Capitalist Democracy is bs. They form parties to argue with each other. What has congress passed lately? Its all a scam to make a public feel that it has no power. They tell us what can and cannot be done. That is wrong. A dictator is the only way that we can get things done that the public wants.

Won't happen. If you're a soldier and your mother is on the streets trying to save her country you are hardly going to get in her way.

I agree. I am hoping a General does the right thing and overthrows the Government. The last time that happened the United States was in control 67-74. But if the right General did it it could be the best thing. The people would support the right person and if the military was behind them then the elites could do nothing other than declare war on a Western Nation. I can see something like this happening. The Europeans will not stand for this unfair austerity.

Hitler did pretty well for a fair while. People were fantical about him. He turned Germany around in just 4 years and put everyone back to work. The economy went from a basketcase to the strongest in Europe in just $ years. He never raised taxes on the poor once. Not even during the war. He introduced social programs. He provided affordable recreation for every German. He paid the German soldiers far more than the British or Americans were paid. Hitler did a great job.

If a dictator gets out of hand and commits 'genocide' then he should be overthrown. Elections could be held every two years to keep them in check. A dictator is better than a bunch of sanators that cant agree on anything. On purpose.

Ha! Like I said,if the dictator gets out of hand he should be overthrown. Not all dictators need to be all evil. A dictator can give the people what they want. Democracy cant and doesnt. The Greeks voted against the bail out. Thats what they should get.

Edit- look at Caeser. He was awesome.

yep and theres the problem. Did well for a while then it all went to hell. Having absolute power is a dangerous thing if the person in power decides to have a spoonful of crazy in his morning cereal.

But the dictator holds the power. What happens when tells people to sit on it and twirl when they want to elect him out and sics the military on them ?what happens when people break apart in support and opposition to him?Trying to get rid of him could put the country in a worst place than it was before he was placed into power.

I think the only solution is a standing army of peoples malitia that is seperate from the military. Like the Wide Awake Republicans. The public need to stop being so timid and passive. Not that I encourage violence but the public must stand up for itself. There is enough homeless people in America to create an SA style malitia.

but as i said earlier you'll have a loyalist paramilitary spring up and side with the military and dictator and we are back to square one with the fighting and separation among people.

i think its about time we rolled the dice. tyler durden didnt care what happened after he overthrew the government. No revolutionary has feared that. I dont think we should be so scared to try something different. If the people vote for something but the elites refuse then its time to rebel. The people of Greece dont want the bail out. They are not scared. They know they do not need the IMF holding its hand.

The issue of soveriegnty comes up too because it is the International Community that will not allow Greece to reject the IMF orders. 'International Community' is code for elites.

But we dont need a stinking SA. We got the numbers. We win hands alone. We just all have to get to the stage where we have had enough. The Greeks are almost there. I hope they can rise up against the International Community and free themselved through Autarky and National Socialism. They must Nationalize all major industries. Nationalizayion will save them.

What's most remarkable to me is the fact that Greece misrepresented their economic data in order to be accepted into the EU.

The EU freely admits this to be the case.

But despite Greece lying to get into the club, the club are doing everything they can to keep them as a member.

On the flip side, the minute that Greece leaves the EU, Turkey will resubmit their application and likely one disastrous economy will be replaced with a much more stable one.

Turkey has applied several times, only to have their application vetoed every time by Greece.

The Greeks asked for their financial disaster and they deserve it.

The retirement in Greece is 55 years and as part of the austerity measure, it has agreed to raise it to 63 years. In the UK, I will be retiring at aged 67.

I have 28 day annual and statutory vacation, the Greeks have up to 38 days a year.

The Greek government lied to get into the Euro ERM and did not discloses their national indebtedness.

Tax evasion is a Greek national sport and the government borrows enormous amounts to pay the pensions they can't afford and the fat government salaries.

Greece is a fairly small country, but for the past year it has been causing an awfully big uproar. Burdened by a pile of government debt that could force it into default (and the European banking system into a meltdown), Greece has had to adopt ever more stringent austerity plans in order to secure a bailout from the European Union. Explanations of how Greece got in this mess typically focus on profligate public spending. But its fiscal woes are also due to a simple fact: tax evasion is the national pastime.

Greeks love their fat watches and their German cars but hate working like a Trojan to get those toys.

IMF head Lagarde: Tax-shy Greeks 'must help themselves'

IMF head Christine Lagarde has urged Greeks to pay taxes, saying she worries more about the plight of children in sub-Saharan Africa than the people of the crisis-hit European nation.

In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, Ms Lagarde suggested it was payback time for Greece.

Kick the Greeks out of the Euro, stop them from migrating into the more dynamic economies and let them sort out their own problem. This is nothing to do with the banking fiasco of 2008. It is about credit drying up and Greeks stuck holding their bag.

Because so many Greek millionaires are jumping ship, the prices of million dollar houses in London are going through the roof. The Greek millionaires are bugging out of Greece to avoid the austerity taxes.

Greece just had a largely PEACEFUL election, but none of the parties were able to form a coalition. In a run off election, the party with the highest vote automatically gets an extra 50 seats in parliament apparently. I have to admit I have no idea how these would be assigned.

The reason that military may be deployed this time is that the party with the most support is a far left nationalist party with plans for a major economic shift that will have a massive impact on the average Greek, and likely there will be mass protests and rioting in response.

They're getting prepared for the worst.
