Exactly. the law is only as good as those who keep it, and it has been shown time and time again that the US Government cannot keep their word or obey their own laws - not only with the tribes, but now with their own citizenry as well.

My dad always told me to ignore what they say and watch what they do instead.

With the same logic, the U.S. should give back the original 13 colonies to England, that we stole from them in 1776.
Then, England can give it ALL back to the indians, because in effect, they stole the Colonies from them.

Come on people from the beginning of time man has been taking and giving land from the beginning of his exsistence, if not by war then trade. Right now that is mans reality, we can only hope that we can change.

The indigenous still exist. That was their ancestor's lands.

There are generational properties up in Montana, where families have lived there for decades. Is it okay for us to tell them they can't have those lands?

I don't see the difference. Or is there a difference just because we're talking about the indigenous here.

I can't stand the UN and to sit there and dictate to the US what WE should be doing and it's not just this it's all the stupidity of the UN thinking they have the power to tell Americans what to do.

I can see how something like this could piss off someone who isn't of Native ancestry, but come on. The U.S. Government dictates what other countries should do all the time...How is this any different?

The Native Americans never owned the land, they merely butchered and raped the previous inhabitants out of existence.
-
And given that the lawful owners, the Clovis Civilization, where Caucasian's, law's and customs dictate the rightful owners now own the property.

I can't believe we are in 2012 having this conversation. You would think that people's consciousness would evolve. This thread reeks of 18th and 19th century backwards thinking. The indigenous never believed that land was to be owned to begin with, but they understood what territories belonged to what tribes. Tribes did war, but they existed on their territories until they were told it was no longer theirs. They didn't have an understanding of buying and owning property, and the whites took advantage of them in this way.

No one wanted the black hills until someone found gold there. The black hills was sectioned off as part of the reservation and bam, when the Indians tried to defend their land, and sacred burial grounds, they were killed for it, but nothing happened to the whites who tried to steal it.

Anyway, I cannot believe some of the backwards, backwoods thinking I see here. That land belongs to them because they were there before and their ancestors were on that land.

As I said in my other post, there are a whole lot of generational lands up here owned by families of the old homesteaders. Just imagine someone walking up to one of these owners and saying "Get off of it, we want it now".

Would never happen. lol Never.

its not about ourselves that we want the land. i want the future generations of my people to live with and beside nature. the land has always been apart of who we are. we are trying to reclaim our identity.

living in the present makes the future look like crap. but you wouldnt know. your too busy in box that is the now.

So if land was given back to your people you would go back to hunter gatherer? You will teach your children to live off the land again? As I said nobody is stopping you from going out and being with nature. You choose to sit on a computer and talk to me.

well I would want compensation for loss of use of the land for the past couple hundred years,(Canadian policies state a max of 150 mil.) as well as the land back. using the compensation monies, we could start up another rez. maybe have a casino. something profitable.

i want most of the land to remain trees bushes and dirt. i want a house. i want to hunt. i want to hear and smell nature.

i dont want concrete, oil, smog, streetlight, horns and sirens,or trains.

i'm not saying i'll go back to a hunter gatherer. but i would still like a place to hunt and fish. and sure, maybe have a small garden. If i tried to i would be poaching and tresspassing and who knows how many other laws i'd be breaking. we used to go where the food was. Deer is Delicious!

Disgusting. How can the UN even speak to anything involving sovereignty, its a joke. The UN is a creation of the western world, not to mention the US's role specifically. And where do they get their legitimacy? From the dictators who get an equal vote?

Giving back land to aboriginals has spurred a $ billion industry of victim hood.
Because of land rights, Aboriginals refuse to be part of society. They get their profit from looking bad, doing bad and getting wasted.

The UN must hate Americans

Well, you never know. You just might get kicked off your property in a settlement. I think people(particularly Progressives) haven't thought through the real ramifications of this.''
For a reality check read this

heartland.org...

And you in your Utopian naivete imagine they will let you squat on their land once they get it back. What are you smokin anyway?

We already have! All the red skins (Mexicans) in the country etc... I know a couple illegal aliens and they are Cherokee! Keep in mind white people came from Spain! We only recognize illegal's because of their native American background.

Injuns, redskins, Mexicans they are one in the same. Given many of the illegal's in country come from deep down south, but it would surprise you just how many come are connected to tribes that fled, or used to inhabit North America.

The few illegals I know think it is an insult to be called an indian or native American but it is what it is.

Stop whining. You have absolutely no reason to whine about this.

We probably should give some land back, considering the treaties we've broken, (what's it at now..? ALL of them?) the land that was stolen, the genocide, the reservation onto the sh***iest land, and the theft of indigenous resources/land by industry/businesses.

We can either be an honorable nation or continue to steep in an unimaginably dishonorable history. Hell.. the Jews were given land post-WW2... it's time to reassess the plight of the Native American and actually try to help them rise up from some pretty miserable conditions (on too many rez's).

1. It's my freedom of speech to tell anyone I want what to do... but it's NOT my right to force people to do things.

2. If you don't want people to respond to your PUBLIC posts on a conspiracy forum and disagree with you, then don't read my reply, or don't post in the first place...

Understand now?

US should do a lot of things. Giving land back to Indians is dang well petty when it comes to all the other things the US should be doing (or rather NOT doing).

UN needs to shut it. The day the USA takes suggestions from the UN is the day the USA is an easy step away from losing its entire constitution, which is already being unraveled.

Anyhow, the bigger point is that the US has quite a long list of other atrocities to stop doing right now before it starts to settle a score with Indians. If they won't stop warring around the globe, what the hell makes you think any Indians are going to get their land back? We're taking over overseas; not a chance! UN is playing dumb for the media outlets, of course! You have to be blind not to see the destruction the US and Israeli team governments combined do, with no signs of stopping.

But, YEA, let's forget all that, and sidetrack these major ongoing wars to discuss giving land back to people while the US does more of the exact same conquering.

I would fully support giving Native Americans an entire state to call their own and have the government subsidize freely to protect them forever and support them at least while they initially make the transition. If it turned out to be the state I live in, I would walk away from my own property(with some stipend to find another).

It's never going to happen though. Globalization is the future now and there's no getting around that.

The biggest irony of all of this is none of us here in the U.S.A. own any land. Residential Lot Rent (property taxes) insure that.

How about the UN telling Australia to give back all the aboriginal lands?

Oh sob sob sob, I was all with you too, but you then go and ruin your point by making asinine statements such as that. You said it perfectly in your OP, despite the crap that happened in the past, NO ONE complaining today would even BE here had it been different. None of the mixed blood people who ignore half of their heritage and proclaim full blood status and berate anyone who just happens to be born into the same country that they were, would have a voice.... instead of dealing with life as we all must, and letting go of hate that does nothing but fester in the harts of people, they call everyone racist invading white *insert female genitalia here* and get sympathy from the sorts of miscreants that sit in the UN and do nothing while tipping their noses into the air.

What do I know anyway, I'm just a wetjala.

Without doubt, they would want their land and complete rights over it, BUT with a nice Internet connection.

It's the same here with the vocal protesters who demand sovereignty over large areas of land currently occupied by people who have lived here for their entire lives, BUT they go about updating their status on facebook as they do it.

We're living in the era of Green-can dreaming.

There was a cartoon in the local West Australian paper here a while back when there were violent protests by vocal groups who consider 10billion dollars nothing for less then 300,000 people.. they want the land. Not the money. Alston had a brilliant cartoon, two Aboriginal people standing on a dock, and a boat full of White Australians saying "Ok, that should be the last of us, keys are on the table. Good luck with it."
