British Muslim leader caught on camera advocating female circumcision

A British Muslim leader has been caught on camera advocating female genital mutilation.

Mohammed Abdul, the Imam of a Bristol mosque, was filmed urging a follower to take women and girls abroad so they can be circumcised legally.

During a meeting with Mohammed Abdul at the Masjid al-Huda mosque: 'In this country, it is not possible, we cannot do that. (For) any other Muslim who likes to practise the way of Prophet Muhammad, the best way is to go to other countries.

'In this country you have to fight for your religion, your cultures, They (the British) don't like your Muslim cultures.'

Although female genital mutilation (FGM) has not been advocated by Muslim scripture, a number of clerics encourage it.

Female circumcision is not part of the Muslim faith as far as I know, although this Iman appears to think it is.

It is a cultural practise carried out by some cultures, including some Muslim cultures.

I wish they would leave such barbaric practises behind when they immigrate to the West. How primitive would a culture need to be to cut a women's clitoris off?

I vote your Avatar gets some quality and meaningful time to discuss the issue of mutilation done against a person's will and with terrible outcomes for that Girl's life going forward.

Something tells me that rather serious looking pooch there could make some VERY important points on this topic and really lead a screaming debate about it with such a man...if just left in privacy for a little while to sort this out.

But then, he never told Muslim men to dress their women in burqas either but Arab men seem to have decided that he did.

The Koran just implies that women should be modest in their dress - not wear a black blanket from head to toe with a slit for the eyes.

I think in the UK it is an offense to take British nationals abroad to be a victim of genital mutilation. It's a disgrace and just another way for women in Islam to be repressed and kept under the thumb. I would like to see some of these men offering themselves up to have their dicks mutilated.

Oh, and before someone says that "men get circumcised”, therefore “what’s the problem” they should look at the difference and consequence.

Both male and female circumcision should be banned before the age of 18, once they get to 18 years of age they can then decide for themselves if they would like it. The same as the rule should be for vaccines, it's a breach of human rights to force vaccinations and circumcisions on children; 18 needs to be the minimum age for both practices.

I think the millions of children saved from nasty diseases and the consequential pain and death may disagree about vaccinations, but that's another thread. This one's about a senior member of the Muslim establishment in the UK trying to get people to break the law and promoting practices which must not be tolerated by civilised society.

Female genital mutilation is an affront.

Nothing is wrong with us religious people...

I think you will find that with or without religion people are capable of good things and evil things...

To believe that it is only religious people who are obsessed with genitalia is naive... Also, circumcision for boys is being recommended in parts of the third world to help prevent the spread of AIDS. This has nothing to do with religion and is based on medical research.

Female genital mutilation (i refuse to call it circumcision) is completely different to male circumcision and can often leave the victim with a whole host of medical problems. There is not actual medical reason to carry out this disgusting practice and it is committed purely because of backwards and primitive cultural customs.

I hate to say that, because i always try and see the beauty in other cultures and practices, but I have to say it as I see it... sick!!! This man is entitled to his twisted opinion... as I am entitled to ridicule him for being a total imbecile!

Female genital mutilation is simply man's attempt to control a woman's sexuality.

I'm not sure why Middle Eastern men are so threatened by women, but they must be. Genital mutilation serves one purpose: to remove sexual pleasure from the woman. If she gets no pleasure, or experiences pain (a frequent effect of mutilation), then the man has effectively controlled the woman.

This is a barbaric custom, and an insult to women.

Female genital mutilation is a different procedure than male circumcision. Removal of the clitorial hood is equivalent to male circumcision, and indeed this should be treated the same by law. But female genital mutilation usually involves much more than this.

Let's not equate mutilating a young girl so she can not feel pleasure with male circumcision. One is about control and power, the other is not. Here are some facts.

Back to the topic at hand, this is just one of numerous ways in which women are kept under the thumb of men. I know a girl living in Saudi Arabia, she lived in London with her husband. When she divorced him after he repeatedly raped and beat her, her government cancelled her scholarships and forced her to return home. She now can not leave the country unless her father allows her to. She desires to move back to the UK or the US, but is completely unable to do anything.

This is heartbreaking.

Can she not apply for asylum? I don't know anything about the laws in the US or UK for this, so forgive the ignorance. I'm in the US and I will do everything in my power to help. Is there something I can do? Sponsor her, let her stay with my family, I don't know....U2U me if you know of any solutions.

No this is Saudi law, there is nothing that be done. Otherwise every single female in the entire country would be eligible for asylum. It is heart breaking indeed Legally she can not leave the country without permission, which her father agreed to, but changed his mind after marrying his new wife who does not like his daughter.

It is a nasty practice.... i was watching 'the killing' and they had an episode there where this thing happened to a 12 year old Somali Muslim.... this stuff is just nasty.... why do this? If the girl doesnt want it done (which i'm sure 99% of them dont) then they should not be forced to do such things....

Where is it anyones right to say that this has to be done?

It's the same for the Men (both Jews and Muslims) have this done from Birth!!

this subject too hot because it deals with islam and the supression of sexuality pertaining womens bodies. fact is that removing the hood increases stimulation and is the type 1 of female circumcision and the other parts of female circumcision is where people pronounce it as mutilation because it removes other aspects of the organ for purposes beyond the functionality of the type 1. removing the clit hood is not illegal and it is the type 1 version of female circumcision. people and proponents to sexuality in general or circumcision on both sides of the gender spectrum consider circumcision mutilation regardless of functional purposes or religious reasons.

if your a man and you are cut you shouldnt have anything else to say let alone to say to a person about they own beliefs. if your a woman and you think this subject matter is ripe for acting like a feminist and are prudish about the reality that type 1 female circumcision is not the same as mutilation(not intending to contest the theories of anticirc proponents) then you need to go activist somewhere else; because there are some real crimes that never see the light in the darkness of ignorance.

im not british but if i was and i see and hear that u british complain alot about your transition to becoming a melting pot; that who cares he is muslim and telling people who are of his belief that they should go to another territory to practice a rite you are not going to assist with. based on the conjecture of the title; the british muslim leader should increase activism in being able to conduct his rights on british soil, or the british people need to protest about invasion of privacy rights pertaining belief or as your forced into coercion "church and state". and i stand by that not even knowing what type of circ being done because that is what the issue portends as addressed in the link.

i think it would be a greater attack on peoples freedoms to ask the muslims what type of circ they are giving their wives. the ignorance associated with a perception of peoples customs are abhorrent.

The last thing anyone can call me is an Islamic apologist etc but fair is fair and right is right.

As far as I can recall nowhere in The Koran or any other Islamic teachings does it advocate female circumcision.

It is very much a cultural practice with it being common in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

The vast majority of Muslim women have not been circumcised and there is little threat of them being so.

By incorrectly labelling this a religious or Islamic practice it deflects from both the true root cause of this inhumane practice and from genuine concerns over the more barbaric aspects of some interpretations of Islam.
