His mother Elizabeth Speer was born in Pennsylvani. His father James Buchanan emigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1783. It was an interesting year for the United States as the Treaty of 1783 was signed between the US and Great Britain. Colonists chose to be United States citizens and by virtue of the Treaty, Great Britain recognized those former subjects as United States citizens. Before the Constitution, United States citizenship was conferred on citizens by the States. When the Constitution was ratified, each citizen of a state became a citizen of the United States. No formal naturalization was needed. On June 21, 1788 the Constitution was ratified. The Buchanans were citizens of Pennsylvania and therefore James Sr. was a citizen of the United States. When James Jr. was born in Pennsylvania he was therefore a natural born citizen, born on United States soil to two US citizen parents.

I will have to do more research, but it is possible that I was wrong.. I found something stating that Obama may still have dual citizenship with both Britain and the United States, while at the age of 22 his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired, he may still hold one for Britain because that may have to be renounced in writing, as it does not expire.

I will look into this more fully to determine this matter.

This question has long since ceased to be of any importance as bearing upon any property rights, and in so far as it relates to whether State citizenship antedated national citizenship, it makes no difference which date is assumed to be correct; for the relations of the States to the federal compact were substantially the same in 1776 as in 1783.

Quite accusatory! Why is it that so many Obama supporters are so hateful? We're not only seeing more and more hate spewed, we're seeing build up to violence. Of course many are paranoid, given all the erratic and spastic behavior coming from the left.
