Could You Stomach These Great Depression Meals?

With all the talk about food storage and growing our own food, I did a little digging around to find out what some people ate during America’s Great Depression of the 1930?s. ...
cont...here

# Milk toast
# Chipped beef on toast
# Cucumber and mustard sandwiches
# Mayonnaise sandwiches
# Ketchup sandwiches
...

Source

Article lists, some posted above, meals ate during the great Depression.

Tried any of these(the more uncommon for today foods)? Likes, dislikes?

I am pretty picky and always eat one thing at a time.

But I actually already eat toast a lot by itself.
Also I eat cucumbers too, by itself.

Anyone who puts mustard on a cucumber is venturing into dark territory imho.

Wouldn't have a problem with any of it. One question though, what the hell is milk toast?

I've tried many of those things and are very tasty.

I love dandelions salads. Rice with milk and sugar makes an excellent dessert.
The black sauce under the grease of beef or pork roast, once refrigerated, and salted, is very tasty on bread.

You should try some.

There are indeed a lot of good things on the list .. mashed potatoes on toast with gravy wouldn't be bad at all .. and I still occasionally have hot dogs with beans .. some of it is just weird though, lard sandwiches? no thanks..

-Mayonnaise sandwiches
Mayo and tomato sandwich!

-Dandelion salad
I've tried it, not too bad... if you are into different types of salad lettuces
.
-Sugar sandwiches
Sugar(substitue for brown sugar) and butter toast to make less bland.

- Hot dogs and baked beans
Still can be pretty common.

-Road kill
In some places deer etc. meat is donated to food banks.

-One eyed Sam – piece of bread with an easy over egg in the center
Don't mind those sometimes.

- Creamed corn on toast
Not bad! But preferred with cornbread or corn mixed in the cornbread.

-Corn mush with milk for breakfast, fried corn mush for dinner
Ah could never, just would feed corn mash to my farm birds.

- Beans
Check.

-Boiled cabbage
Sometimes common.

Milk toast is when you put bread in milk to make cereals. I do it often, but I rip the bread in pieces, first, and sugar it a little.

I am happy to eat plain rice by itself. Nothing else is needed.

I do cook it though.

I consider myself lucky because around this world a lot of people struggle to land a bowl of rice for the day...

Wondered that too, but am thinking milk mixed in with toast/toast pieces. Hah, reminds me of when I was a kid I had seen other kids mixing dandelion stems(milk that leaks out) into a milk with toast in it bowl.

I think I have had milk toast. I know I've done ketchup sandwiches, had hot milk and rice. Fried potatos and hotdogs O_o? Really I think for the most part I might be fine. Though this one concerns me a bit -- Squirrel =/

you pretty much read out the contents of my school lunch box, from the 70's i used to look in amazement that some kids got orange round lollies in theirs (vitamin C tablets) and they had fruit juice in their drink bottles where i had water though at the start of the day was frozen.

so yeah i could easily live on rashen's. and even as an adult i have, thanks to my hubby bringing home army RAT packs when we have desperately needed them, even my kids have gone to school with their biscuits wrapped in green and cold baked beans.

anyone who was bought up poor will survive.

I think I could survive on tomato sandwiches and the occasional roadkill stew. Cucumbers and mustard, I don't think so, but give em some vinegar and onion and let em sit for a day and I am good. Leave the milk off my toast please. And give me all the eggs you have for protein and I am good.

And for celebratory days......red beans and rice! Which I have nicely stored in my basement for when I need them.

ETA: Plenty of rabbits running around in my neck of the woods. We actually BBQ'd two of them Christmas Eve for a friend that had never eaten rabbit. Was quite good, if I do say so myself!

This is milk toast. Sago is something else from what I've seen. It's not what I had in mind...

Another thing that I don't see many people talk about.....GRITS!!!

I like them with butter, my wife and daughter like a bit of milk and sugar with them.....and they make a great dinner with some shrimp if you happen to live near the coast. They store well and a little goes a long way, much like rice!

Haha hearing grits brings back some memories of my childhood when my parents were trying to figure out what I might enjoy eating. Grits was one of them, I think I may cook some soon with my grandmama
