(CNSNews.com) - Self-professed conservatives now outnumber self-professed liberals in the United States, 42 percent to 21 percent, according to a Gallup poll published Monday. Another 37 percent described themselves as moderates.

www.cnsnews.com...

It's poll time people on here at ATS kind of interesting:

42% Conservative
21% Liberal
37% Moderates

So what does this really mean?

Wonder just how much of this change has been due to the current Potus and his party? If this is true then the current Potus is going to get a thumping come 2012.

Of course that depends on how the Independent's are going to vote and last time i checked they aren't too happy with him.

If this pattern continues, 2011 will be the third straight year that conservatives significantly outnumber moderates -- the next largest ideological bloc. Liberalism has been holding steady for the past six years, averaging either 21% or 22%, although notably higher than the 17% average seen in Gallup polling during the early to middle '90s.

Yeah if the trend continues and we don't get another Bush or R.I,N.O.

A much higher proportion of Republicans call themselves "very conservative" or "conservative" (71%) than Democrats call themselves "very liberal" or "liberal" (38%). Democrats are as likely to call themselves moderates as liberals.

This is true nobody will ever call themselves hard right or left.

www.gallup.com...

So what say you ATS?

Are the liberals outnumbered?

Are you a moderate?

Are you a Independent?

The truth of this poll will be on display come 2012.

Never trust a poll as they are unreliable and untrustworthy and are biased by the leaning of the agency conducting the poll!

Never take them seriously.

I think the position "never" trust a poll is a little extreme. Sure, bias can be found in some polls, either in the wording of the question, or the sample weighting. But it's hard to shrug off 2-1 as being meaningless.

Yes, I think our President and his regulatory agencies have given his party a bad name. I think they will lose heavily in 2012 unless this campaign becomes more vicious and violent than those I can remember.

Now that I think of it, look at the OWS threads and I think you'll see the kind of hatred, anger, and divisiveness that will be the cornerstone of the reelection campaign.

such a poll is a census on stupidity. people that still label themselves and others within "party" spectrums are mere cheerleaders sanz pom-poms.

does that poll have a "who gives a rat's ass" option?

I'll bet you $100 (figuratively) that they retake this same poll in a month and the numbers will be different, Hence why never trust nor legislate based upon some poll.

It's been that way for a long time. The Independents took charge a while back. Even more important I think is the part of the Democratic Party that represents the fringe Left like the groups Obama worked (works) for are only a tiny part of the Democrats.

Independents I see as the wisest ones. We are not beholding to a Party or a Party Platform and don't have to lie to defend our positions. We can talk honestly. We don't have to do or say what we are told by the Party elite. We are the insulation between the corrupt Parties and either one taking it all over.

I'm shocked anyone admits to belonging to either Party.

Yeah, I'd sooner trust Herman Cain's hands over any poll.

I reckon its because people that consider themselves liberal realise that the democrats are a joke.People dont want to associate themselves with the democrats.I think alot of liberals are pissed that Obama tricked them. Alot of 'liberals' are now going to vote for Ron Paul.

I like the data...even if your interpretation of it is entirely wrong.
This isn't evidence that Obama will be defeated. If anything it's the opposite.

You quote this:

A much higher proportion of Republicans call themselves "very conservative" or "conservative" (71%) than Democrats call themselves "very liberal" or "liberal" (38%). Democrats are as likely to call themselves moderates as liberals.

So all republicans call themselves conservative, while democrats are divided on whether to call themselves liberal or moderate...
in other words, you can count all of the moderates and liberals as democrats...

Based on what is said in your source...there are ~42% Republicans, and ~58% Democrats.

I'm not being entirely serious about counting all moderates and liberals as democrats. I was using hyperbole to illustrate my point....
You are assuming that conservative=republican, liberal=democrats, and independent=moderate...While it's a good rule of thumb...it's terrible to assume that in a poll like this.

You mention not getting another Bush or RINO...lol how do you expect to accomplish that? Because Ron Paul is the only person who I would not consider a RINO or Bush wannabe. And we all know his chances at getting elected.

Dear TheImmaculateD1,

I was all set to agree with you, then I decided to take a look at Gallup polls. (I find them very slightly left-leaning.)

Here was an article I found from last year: Gallup Conservative v Liberal mid-year 2010

I was surprised by the numbers. Since 1992 Conservatives have always been between 36-42%. Liberals have always been betwen 16-22%.

I don't think I'll take your bet, I don't know what I'd do with 100 figurative dollars.

With respect,

Conservatives - Liberals - Moderates - Independents is such a dumb system. What a stupid system!

How do the supposedly Left wing socialist Democrat party keep getting voted in when Liberals only account for 20% of the population? Dumb Americans
Either these Moderates and Independents are far more Liberal than they admit or the Democrat party is Centrist at best

Among Republicans, conservatives currently outnumber moderates by nearly 3 to 1, 72% vs. 24%, while very few are liberal (4%).

Really do wish people would read the source content.

A poll will slant anything they want to favour whomever it wants hence why they are not to be trusted.

Actually the Independents have outnumbered the others in the polls for some time now. People are getting really disgusted with the Partisans and their divisive insanity.

Even more interesting thing is that the so called Liberals are the richest per-capita and funded by the 1%. I find that really telling also. Odd how they demonize the successful when they are the ones profiting most from Capitalism. The Right feeds at the trough of government handouts making them phonies as well. One thing I'm sure of is people who wear their Parties on their shirtsleeves are the real sheep among us.

From ABC 20_20 on who makes the most and who gives the most to help others. Old but still applies. People who call themselves Liberals earn the most, Conservatives give about 30% more to Charity than Liberals do.

None of which matters. It's just more divide and control crap. These labels are used to control us and people need to understand its all a game. No matter who is in control the exact same things happen. Keep us divided over our differences and they know they can control us all. It always works and right now Obama is the most aggressive divider I've seen in my memory from JFK forward. He will likely do even more damage than Bush did I'm sure.

So if moderates and conservatives outnumbered liberals 3:1, how did Obama and the democrats have such sweeping victories in 2008?

According to that chart it's been about the same ratio for 20 years now. Yet here we are with the 'oppressed' conservative minority in congress and across the country.

That's pretty much true. Nearly all of the "moderates" are people that most conservatives would call "liberal" even if they themselves don't identify with it. And you sort of illustrate that when you bring up the voting record of the US.

Because liberal doesn't equal democrat, moderate doesn't equal independent, and conservative equals republican(pretty much.)

My guess is the base electorate, those who vote republican or democrat every time are essentially equal. Notice how neither party will change their mind no matter what? Even the "open-minded" democrats?
And this explains why democrats like to call themselves "moderate." It is the more "open-minded" thing to do.
