I mean COME ON. There's actually people out there considering voting for that guy? REALLY??

Oil refineries seek huge tax refunds that could force schools to give back money

Some of the nation's largest oil refineries are seeking huge tax refunds that could force school districts and local governments across Texas to give back tens of millions of dollars they were counting on to pay teachers and provide other services.

The refineries want the tax breaks in exchange for buying pollution-controlling equipment. But the cost to public schools would be dear, coming only months after lawmakers slashed education spending by more than $4 billion.

If a three-member commission appointed by Gov. Rick Perry grants the refunds, nearly half the money would be taken from schools. Classrooms in cities with refineries would be hurt most.

She is president of the parent-teacher organization, which was created this past summer after budget cuts left the school without basic supplies such as pencils and paper towels.

Gonzales lives near a miles-long stretch of refineries, where massive pipes and stacks light the night like skyscrapers do in other cities. An intense odor of burnt chemicals hangs over the town.

"There are days when we can't go out because our children's asthma is that bad," she said. "And then they want money back?"

There is no timeline for a ruling. The slow pace of the decision has put municipalities and school districts in the position of collecting and spending money they could be forced to return.

Schools alone could be forced to fork over $62.8 million, according to data compiled by the AP.

Brilliant, Perry, BRILLIANT.

Underfunded schools = undereducated population = easier to control population. This is simply a continuation of a plan that's been in effect for the majority of the last century.

Parents: Make sure your children's educations begin at home. Real education comes from mom and dad. If you make sure your kids have a solid foundation for critical thinking, problem solving and asking the right questions it matters less that their primary and secondary schools are bound to be far under par.

Has anyone read some of the shocking comments that are all for taking the money back from the schools to give the oil companies?

It is simply amazing that there are people that think like these people do. Something evil is afoot in the world and people are choosing sides. Whats really ironic the Christian right is choosing the dark side.

I'm constantly amazed that the TPM/GOP feel like the govt. is stealing their taxdollars to give to the poor in the form of SS or medicare but support corporate welfare when they are already showing record profits and ripping off the American working man.

Apparently Gov. Perry represents his constituency.

people will be outraged
The sad thing is people will not be outraged, they are so easily manipulated by politicians with their fake smiles and windy rhetoric. All he has to do is hold a few babies, talk about god and play the good 'ol boy act and all is forgiven. How hard these rats must laugh at the common people as they line their pockets with dirty money and sell off our future to the highest bidder.

aww the evil perry is taking money from all those kiddies

even those illegals who get cheaper rates than legal residents how dare he.

and how dare those companies get tax refunds when they over paid into the system.

if it were anyone else but oil you would be cheering for them but no no oil companies are EVIL!!!

schools and money aint the problem lets throw millions of dollars that produce nothing but intellectually challenged individuals.

no no millions are not enough lets throw billions for indoctrination and be told what to think instead of how to think

not jumping on the hate bandwagon here because the educational system in america is severly lacking.

you know what you do when you aint got the cash?

innovation and necessity are the mother of all inventions.

this is a win win for all those who say big oil dont pay taxes
and for those who are getting shafted those legal citizens in favor of illegals.

I see nothing wrong with this

Oil is good for the economy.
A generation of drooling drugged out zombie students is good for the economy(Well, not ours, but anyway)
There is nothing wrong with this plan. Especially when we figure out how to make kids into fuel.

Do you understand that they didn't earn refunds? We heavily subsidize the oil industry. That means there is no need for them to be innovative, competitive, or any of the other things that define American ingenuity. All they need to do is sit back, keep drilling, and spend our tax money and then squeeze us for even more by accepting a refund.

Neo, I know your heart is in the right place but you still don't seem to see that endorsing these type of subsidized industries is endorsing the very opposite of the American dream. There is nothing noble or "free" about giving them money, letting them rip us off, then letting them take even more money as a thank you.

No one said a thing about illegals, and it's absolutely horrendous that you want to take money away from already poor teachers in favor of oil companies or any companies at all.

sorry dude but they are a huge part of the educational system in america and that topic was brought up and should be brought up if anyone is talking about the education budget of texas.

putting the coversation into proper context is a must you cant pick and choose what matters and what doesnt.

educational funding gets cut that means people are getting shafted and they are getting shafted because people are paying taxes to that state goverment thats not going to the people it should go to

dont have to like it but thats the way it is tax dollars in texas are being spent in texas on people who should not be there.

how about evading taxes if you're so against what your tax money is being used for. understand first it's not your money. it belongs to the federal reserve.

you are only a temporary holder of the note. your work, if you are not directly involved in producing a product needed for the agenda and goals of the party in power, is to finance thru a portion of your pay, the manufacturers of needed hardware and services.

the poor in america are a burden. the poor in america are not a cog in the machine. thru conscience, knowingly or unknowingly, they are not part of the current system.

their punishment in america is lack of quality in healthcare and service. if they even get attended to.

their punishment for not financing the imperial war machine that america has become, is cold winters, public transportation, macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles.

their punishment is wearing the same winter jacket for the last 7 years. the same sneakers for the last 5 years and the same jeans and shirts for the last 4 years.

their punishment is never having seen the interior of a late model car. or seeing the sunset in the bahamas.

these are our fallen brothers in arms.

Schools are just socialist indoctrination chambers, meant to educate the wrethced into believing they equal with the wealthy.

This only gives them false hope.

Tax breaks for companies will give these people good jobs, which is much more important than 'education'.
