I was emphasizing a fact, historically verified; sometimes screaming "kill him! kill the bastard!" isn't enough to get you the necessary guts to take a life.

All around the weapon gets hated on worse than the usmc by shansen over here but in my experiences its never failed me.

Ive been around rifles for a long time....the best advantage you can have with the .22 is the ammo is so cheap and....in rough times there will be no one remaking .22 ammo. So .22 ammo could also become a sort of currency due to the amount of .22 rifles. I know a higher caliber sounds like the way to go but if you already have an AR then I think a .22 is great survival weapon...and it can be used for light defense. The fact is you will want to avoid battles at all costs. Every fire fight you are in no matter what weapon you have you are really rolling the dice on survival chances.

So Id keep what ya got....and just get really good with cleaning it, maintaining it and shooting it. .22 is great for hunting.

I will though recommend a remington 700 if you must add to you collection. With a nice scope. Its a sniper rifle. If you were to be in a good position with little training you could hit targets consistently from 500 yds. That distance advantage is what I think is going to make it in the the shtf days. Up close battles can go bad even for the best trained.

Good luck my friend...Oh and just as reference...been in the infantry for 4 years/police 5/police sniper/swat for 2 and carry exactly what is mentioned above along with a couple pistols and im a pretty big survival freak haha.

Take her with you when you go shopping and let her hold it and lift it to make sure she is able to handle it without her arms getting tired right away. The only reason I mention this is because I had a hard time with one of my hubby's rifles when we were target shooting because the dang thing was so heavy. I could only shoot for a few minutes and then my arms would get shaky, not good. Just my two cents.

Mini-14 or a M-4 shortie AR....thats an easy one...just stay away from 9mm's...in any form

You may want to get her a rifle with a large trigger space as she may need to be wearing rubber gloves and a full NBC suit. I would reccomend a .308 or a thirty ot six for that 500 yard + range. Id go with a saiga 12 gauge with a few 20 round drums for close range. bunkers are nice, dig one. I WOULD BUY a new mini 14 with 10 to 20 mags. maybe a cheap sidearm, but keep that .22 around with bundle of nanner clips. back up guns are priceless. 22's are cheap inexpensive and accurate if u get shot even by a .22 its going to slow them down or stop them 4 seconds 15 bullets on target. .22 will work. The ruger min14 is one of the best guns on the market at its price and reliability, a dam good buy, ruger doesn't make crap. HERES IS A list of stuff that your going to need.

2.) 5 year dated 40 mm filter for gas mask, get a couple . 40 bux a piece
3.) gas mask hood,
4.) NBC suit,
5.) biochem gloves and boots.

AK/SKS,30/30. Light recoil and common ammo and solid performer to just past 300 yards or better..

if your hanging everything on a shotgun in an "alamo" situation, they are already too close.

This is not to mention, all three are just dang fun to plink with!

Weapons are only half of the battle of prepardness. Of course you also have to shoot something through it. In terms of replenishing ammo a good cross bow is your best bet because arrows are easily made. In a total SHTF scenario we are probably looking at about a 7 year war much like Iraq has gone through. Fortunately, any invasion will probably not last longer than that just because of resupply problems (think China or Russia for example). The homefront would already be in command of regional militias and any invader would have as tough a time as anyone else in finding food and water, etc. Since militiaries use lots of ammo that is the best type of caliber weapon to also have in your own supply. The US National Guard would be the first to fold and be overrun. They use 9mm, and 5.56x 45 (M16 ammo). Considering many of these troops will cut and run they might leave some behind. US military snipers use 7.62 x 52 (.308) ammo and the Remington 700 SPS is the best rifle money can buy in my opinion and is the basic build with extras of the US military sniper rifle. A good scope and this rifle is deadly at 300-400 meters. The M16/Ar-15 variants are good for basic combat but generally overheats and jams in long gun fights and are good upto about 200 meters (yards). That ammo is in good supply and will be for a while into the SHTF scenario. Chinese/Russian invaders will be using 7.62x 39 ammo. It is cheap but corrosive ammo and that is what they will bring with them. If you already have an SKS AK then you might be able to find that ammo off of dead soldiers.

For basic home defense nothing works like a 12 ga shotgun. The best thing to do is load a buck shot round first and then a ball round and then a buckshot and then another ball, etc. The idea is that in the confusion the buckshot might throw off the attacker while you get better aim with the ball round. The ball round is like a regular bullet. You either hit or you don't. Most people won't. These weapons are like anything and require familiarization and practice to be good with them. You simply don't buy something and put it in the closet thinking it is going to do some kind of magic trick when you need it.

So the key components of buying SHTF weapons are;

Your familiarity with the weapons system and practice.
The area the battle will most likely be in (long range vs. close quarter combat)
The availability of replacement and stocked ammo.
And the necessity of a one shot one kill capability requiring a heavy barrel and scope.

Or you can be like the dumbed down masses of London and depend on a baseball bat and a bunch of police to come to your rescue. Not likely going to happen.

Adding a second comment her for something to think about. Lets say the shtf...you are also going to want to consider a weapon that you can find parts to replace. Im not a big fan of the AK, and I love the AR...but either way both of those weapons will be much easier to swap out replaceable parts if something goes bad.

Another to consider is if you plan on hunkering down in your home or if you must leave the area. I have 2 plans. If I am staying in the area I have a small group of like minded friends and we are going to meet at a certain location...you got to sleep sometime...I always keep a half tank of gas in my vehicle at the minimum just so i can get a couple hundred miles away if need be....but weight may be seomthing to think about if you are going to be on the move.

The idea that you are going to be able to survive as just a family unit which is how most Americans are now socieologicaly set up is not going to suffice. You will need to start finding out who are the survivalists in your neighborhood and working out militiary style logistics plans. I would not do that through social media like this one however since the plans could easily be monitored by nefarious peoples.

You have to think in 7 year increments. There is a reason why most things in the bible happen over 7 year periods (tribulation, etc.etc.). At certain times certain things happen. This is not by chance but normal geo-political progression.

First is confusion. Then chaos. Short term survival. Long term suvivial and then a new beginning based on a new status quo. It is not mysterious. Most people get tapped out of the process in the confusion, chaos and short term survival phase especially as large militaries are involved. Eventually you will want to move beyond the fear of just having enough to eat, wondering who is going to attack you, etc. etc. As has been the case through history, a new political class will develop. It is unavoidable.

In terms of short term and long term survival you will need to be able to work with people over a chosen regional area. The more you understand your surroundings and situation the better. You don't have to wait until SHTF to understand your surroundings and situation and the people who make up your region.

Don't worry. The people who have the following list for their 7 year preparation plan will be the first to be killed off by serious groups. The sooner we get the simple minded misfits out of the way the better anyway. Most people have not shot weapons through a gas mask. I have and it is difficult at best. Find the people wearing gas masks and spend your ammo on them first since they will have no idea who just shot them. Take their water purification pills that won't do a damn thing about most parasites in the water supply and chuck them and use thier duck tape to tape their mouths shut as they pass into the nest world. Also, dump their porn on the fire because your children don't need to see that #.

The best 350.00 you can spend is on a Catadyn Sliver/Ceramic pocket filter. It is made out of aircraft alluminum, built like a tank and will purify 13,000 gallons of water before replacement. The filter is made of silver and therefore the price of the device keeps going up. The bonded silver/ceramic filter will also reduce radioactive iodine in the water. It is that good.

If could only have two things in a survival situation it would be the Catydyn filter and a very sturdy hunting knife. I use the one that has lashing holes in the handle so it can easily be turned into a spear. Everything else in life is just a luxury.

Speaking of silver. Use silver bandaids and compresses. The silver kills bacteria and fungus. They are more expensive but worth it. You can use silver dollars in your milk jug to make milk last longer as well. If you have a baby put a silver spoon in their mouth. That is what the evil rich people (folks on ATS love to hate) used to do hence the term, born with a silver spoon in their mouth.
