In many cases Press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish is because companies have expanded into Latin America and have to have a way to communicate with spanish speaking clients in spanish speaking countries. In some cases it's just covering bases.

Hillary seems to concur.

The size of the Latin American economy and its young demographics are especially important for the United States, because our economy is tied much more closely to the economies of our neighbors than to those across the oceans. Forty-three percent of all of our exports stay in the Western Hemisphere. We export more than three times as much to Latin America than we do to China. And I want to repeat that, because I don’t think there are very many Americans who understand or know that. We export more than three times as much to Latin America than we do to China. We export more to Latin America than to Europe, and more to Chile or Colombia than to Russia. North America is the largest free trade area in the world.

So what! I can go to Tunisia and find products printed in Danish. Does that mean that Tunisia has to have Danish as a language taught in school or as a primary language beside French and Arabic/Berber?

You said and I quote:

Companies print labels in Spanish because they want Spanish speaking people to buy their product.

It's part of NAFTA. No one said anyhting about teaching spanish in american classes.

Many other cultures who have come here and speak english do not want to be forced to learn yet another language. They came here to be American and learned english.

You keep mixing up the issues. Companies have a right to hire based on their needs, whatever these may be. You don't measure up then sorry someone else gets the job. That's the american way.

You or anyone not ok with someone talking in a different language is a personal matter.

No one has to learn to speak spanish.

I was perfectly qualified as were the other people interested in the position. Just because most of their employees refused to speak the language of the country they moved to, does not mean that citizens should just cave in and cater to them. Companies like to hire illegal immigrants so they can pay them sub-standard wages. These people are taken advantage of. It has nothing to do with these people being 'better' than anyone else. You have missed many of the very important comments in here. Perhaps someone more articulate can explain things to you.

I have read all the comments in this thread. Not one of them has proven that a company should give up it's freedom to decide who is better qualified for a position.

I don't need someone to explain it to me, I understand. They have a workforce of illegals and they need someone who could speak their language because, according to you, they refuse to learn english. Right they need a spanish speaking person for the job. You don't fit the bill then call in the next applicant. It's their right.

That is a lie! The position had nothing to do with knowing spanish. The only reason you were required to speak it was because most of their employees spoke it. Period! It didn't matter that one was perfectly qualified for the job. That is riduculous, unfair, and not right.

At my former job when one came in not knowing a word of english, so much time was wasted having to interpret for them all the time, but they were paid much less than anyone else, so the company was happy. So don't tell me that I or anyone else was not qualified.

If they want spanish speakers, whatever their reasons, and you don't speak spanish then you do not qualify. There is no lie there.

What is ridiculous is you saying you qualified but you didn't speak spanish when speaking spanish was one of the qualifications that they asked for.

People did qualify for the actual job and what that position physically entailed. I'm done with this discussion with you.

I actually understand what your saying. Let me give you an example.

I have a coffee shop and I have a position for a waitress. I get two applicants. Both young ladies who are qualified and physically able to do the job. One is a bit quiet and doesn't smile much and the other one is peppy. I choose the one with pep because it is in my best interest. The other one is qualified but doesn't fit my needs. It's my right to choose who I want working for me.

Same in the situation you describe. Maybe the other applicants were technically qualified for the position but the employer weighed in other attributes. Happens all the time. It's their right.

However, the company would not know a single thing about someone who didn't or couldn't even apply because of the language requirement. There is a difference. I never applied for that job by the way. The spanish language itself had nothing to do with the actual physical job. US citizens who could have done the job as well or even better could not even apply. That is the difference. It is sad to see my fellow citizens who come in all colors and cultures and know the english language, turned away from a job while someone who refuses to speak the language of the country they moved to is employed and able to care for their families.

No matter what you say or how you say it, it does not refute the fact that citizens are being displaced in their own country for no good reason.

So it was a major requirement. I have seen many capable workers shot down by the "previous experience needed" requirement. Didn't mean they couldn't do the job. Maybe they could do it even better than someone who had a year under their belt but you know who got the job.

The spanish language itself had nothing to do with the actual physical job. US citizens who could have done the job as well or even better could not even apply. That is the difference.

But it had to do with the working environment. People get hired or not based on how the employer sees them fitting into the workplace.

I don't refute the fact that people are being displace I'm just pointing out that it is the right of the employers to do so.

Maybe you ought to go back to England where they speak REAL English.

The US has never said that English is their official language and it never will be. People will continue to speak whatever language they please..and since it was the Spanish colonists that got here first...Spanish was infact the first European language of the Americas.

Most of these Americans who find an outrage at other Americans speaking in Spanish amonst themselves don't say crap about for example Germans, or other non native English speakers speaking in German, or other languages amongst themselves in the U.S...

There are bars within the U.S. where only certain languages, such as German, are spoken, where is the outrage that this is happening?...

For me, the difference is that the Germans are not trying to reconquista the entire Southwest. It's just that simple.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to read the entire discussion...but the first page was enough to piss me off. So sorry if I repeat any other counter arguments already posted.

The U.S. do NOT have an official language. And that is no oversight, it is 100% intentional. No matter how Republican, or Democratic the legislature gets...no idiot would dare touch that untouchable right. It doesn't matter where you were born, or HOW LONG you've lived here. You have the right to speak the language that you speak. Whether you're Central American/South American and your first language is Spanish (like most) or even Quechua, or any other language of the continents...you have the right to speak it... just as the Norwegian, German, Polish, Italian, French, OR any other language of the immigrants of the centuries this country has endured....legal or illegal...that is the basic right of any person on this land. Speak what you want to speak, in the language that you speak.

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

English is the language you probably need to understand...no denying it...but the nation, least of all a single individual from a single state, has the right to demand you to speak it. Even if you understand it...

Well, the way I see it is, if the job entails anything besides the need to translate, then they are not an equal opportunity employer. For instance, there may be certain diplomatic functions which would require translation, but if it's just because an employer wants to cater to a certain group, then.....where are the PC people on this? It's always a one way street with Progressives.

What this really is about is the agenda of multiculturalism, which is really the agenda for a Marxist Socialist Utopia masked as human rights. I already posted this on another similar thread where people were bashing America for beating up people to speak English. That thread turned up right after this one did. The UN Agenda 21 and the Millenium Declaration both have multiculturalism as a basis for their ideas, but the true purpose is a One World Government. Just google and study the UN Agenda 21 and anyone can figure it out.

No, it's not their right to hire illegals. It's against the law. You will find out when ICE raids it. But I understand that our current Prez has ordered fewer raids on companies in lieu of his progressive agenda. If they have a workforce of legal residents that's another story, but then where are the PC Progressives ?

He is speaking in Spanish because we as a society have made it simple and acceptable for latinos to come and live here and not embrace our country and culture. This is being done intentionally to dilute our history and culture. I work for Verizon Wireless, and we have to have spanish speakers in all the stores to make there lives easier. Our government is also issuing dead peoples credit to border jumpers that just arrived here. They come in with no ID and just a piece of paper from the IRS with a tax number on it. This is what we run there credit with instead of a social. Its amazing how many of them get a 0 deposit and they have no credit history. However, if an 18 year old white American comes to get a phone they almost always have a deposit. So you can see how this is all playing out. Its no wonder they want to flock here in record numbers! Its like Derick Vineyard in American History X said, its like an Fing pinata exploded.

I suppose this is ATS...and we need to acknowledge 'world order' pressures. Where everyone...everywhere...should zero in...on the conspiracy to accept all different cultures, all different languages, all different nationalities into a single unified global force and language. Of course that is American English....oh, say Chicago region? See that's where the global powers would love to see us move...Plenty of misdirection, enough minority pressure, but not too much (they are dangerously close to Wisconsin), lots of languages, but only enough social services to misdirect the non-English folk. But plenty of white folk to keep the rest of the white folk pissed at everyone else? Of course not the white folk in Chicago...just enough to use an example to everone else in...say...Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, etc? (Please, anyone else zeroing in on the flavor of the post...back me up?)
