In many cases Press 1 for English and 2 for Spanish is because companies have expanded into Latin America and have to have a way to communicate with spanish speaking clients in spanish speaking countries. In some cases it's just covering bases.
The size of the Latin American economy and its young demographics are especially important for the United States, because our economy is tied much more closely to the economies of our neighbors than to those across the oceans. Forty-three percent of all of our exports stay in the Western Hemisphere. We export more than three times as much to Latin America than we do to China. And I want to repeat that, because I don’t think there are very many Americans who understand or know that. We export more than three times as much to Latin America than we do to China. We export more to Latin America than to Europe, and more to Chile or Colombia than to Russia. North America is the largest free trade area in the world.

So what! I can go to Tunisia and find products printed in Danish. Does that mean that Tunisia has to have Danish as a language taught in school or as a primary language beside French and Arabic/Berber?
Companies print labels in Spanish because they want Spanish speaking people to buy their product.

It isn't just all about me and my personal feelings. I have seen friends turned away from employment. I have heard the voices of our citizens all across the USA who think and feel as I do. This issue involves millions of people who don't want to feel as though they left their own country.
Many other cultures who have come here and speak english do not want to be forced to learn yet another language. They came here to be American and learned english.

You keep mixing up the issues. Companies have a right to hire based on their needs, whatever these may be. You don't measure up then sorry someone else gets the job. That's the american way.
You or anyone not ok with someone talking in a different language is a personal matter.
No one has to learn to speak spanish.

I have read all the comments in this thread. Not one of them has proven that a company should give up it's freedom to decide who is better qualified for a position.
I don't need someone to explain it to me, I understand. They have a workforce of illegals and they need someone who could speak their language because, according to you, they refuse to learn english. Right they need a spanish speaking person for the job. You don't fit the bill then call in the next applicant. It's their right.

That is a lie! The position had nothing to do with knowing spanish. The only reason you were required to speak it was because most of their employees spoke it. Period! It didn't matter that one was perfectly qualified for the job. That is riduculous, unfair, and not right.
At my former job when one came in not knowing a word of english, so much time was wasted having to interpret for them all the time, but they were paid much less than anyone else, so the company was happy. So don't tell me that I or anyone else was not qualified.

If they want spanish speakers, whatever their reasons, and you don't speak spanish then you do not qualify. There is no lie there.
What is ridiculous is you saying you qualified but you didn't speak spanish when speaking spanish was one of the qualifications that they asked for.

I actually understand what your saying. Let me give you an example.
I have a coffee shop and I have a position for waitress. I get two applicants. Both young ladies who are qualified and physically able to do the job. One is a bit quiet and doesn't smile much and the other one is peppy. I choose the one with pep because it is in my best interest. The other one is qualified but doesn't fit my needs. It's my right to choose who I want working for me.
Same in the situation you describe. Maybe the other applicants were technically qualified for the position but the employer weighed in other attributes. Happens all the time. It's their right.

However, the company would not know a single thing about someone who didn't or couldn't even apply because of the language requirement.
The spanish language itself had nothing to do with the actual physical job. US citizens who could have done the job as well or even better could not even apply. That is the difference.
No matter what you say or how you say it, it does not refute the fact that citizens are being displaced in their own country for no good reason.

Maybe you ought to go back to England where they speak REAL English.
The US has never said that English is their official language and it never will be. People will continue to speak whatever language they please..and since it was the Spanish colonists that got here first...Spanish was infact the first European language of the Americas.
Most of these Americans who find an outrage at other Americans speaking in Spanish amonst themselves don't say crap about for example Germans, or other non native English speakers speaking in German, or other languages amongst themselves in the U.S...
There are bars within the U.S. where only certain languages, such as German, are spoken, where is the outrage that this is happening?...
